Hi everyone!

I’m a bit concerned because our newborn hasn’t pooped since Friday. Is that typical?

I've seen this with my two. Can do one every day, not poop for 2-3, do 3 in one day. There's just no rhythm to this.

All I'll say is prepare for a poonami 😂

Lifeisntadressrehearsal · 26/01/2025 23:47

Is the baby breastfed? Only asking because some breastfed babies ( had this with mine) often don't pooh a lot when exclusively breastfed and can go a few days. Then you do get a bit of a poohnami though!

AmusedOtter · 27/01/2025 07:41

She’s 14days old. Il see if she does one this morning, if not il get the missus to msg the midwife. Thank you

It can very much depend on whether you're BFing or FFing.

If baby is BF, there's a good guide on weeks 2 to 6 here.

Congratulations on your new DD too Flowers

This is normal. One of mine went for 5 days. When she did go it was volcanic.

Good idea. After a few weeks old they may go for longer without pooing but at this age it should be every day. Has your baby been weeing as usual? Do they have a temperature at all or seem ok otherwise?

AmusedOtter · 27/01/2025 12:19

She’s been weeing as usual. She has reflux at the moment so don’t know if that’s something to do with it.

And no temperature

They should be doing at least two poos a day under 6 weeks old. How many days old are they?

This is a good guide https://www.nct.org.uk/information/baby-toddler/caring-for-your-baby-or-toddler/newborn-baby-poo-nappies

I would call the midwife in the morning.

Edited

This is good advice.

The NHS guidance has recently changed on this and they now tell you to seek advice if a baby under 6weeks isn't having at least one dirty nappy every day. So it isnt correct to say that it is normal. https://www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/feeding-your-baby/breastfeeding/breastfeeding-challenges/constipation/#how-often

Most likely everything is fine, but in the event it isn't, it can be dealt with quickly. My DD2 didn't poo for 72hrs around the same age and it quickly became apparent that it was due to a feeding issue combined with a tummy bug and we were able to get help before she got dehydrated.

If she's still not piped and is having colic like symptoms I would definitely call the MWs.

Actual reflux or just possetting some milk after a feed which is normal?

That shouldn’t stop her pooing. Hopefully it’s just a blip but it should be checked out. Is she BF or
bottle fed? I would ring the midwives.

Actual reflux, we had to ring 111 the other night and got referred to frimley for her to be checked out. We changed her milk now to kendamill organic which seems to be okay 🤞. She’s bottle fed.

spoke to midwife and she said it’s common and said about us doing bycle kicks to help her.

What are the symptoms for colic?

OP posts:
TinyMouseTheatre · 27/01/2025 14:52

Sorry I said Colic when I really meant reflux.

Reflux, Cow's Milk Protein Allergy and Tongue Tie unfortunately all have very similar symptoms.

Here are the ones for CMPA.

Here are the ones for TT

Another alternative is that it's just newborn behaviour, have a google of the 4th Trimester Wink

'Cos she's obviously not doing much else?

Formula can cause constipation so it may be that.
Bicycle legs is a good idea.

TY78910 · 27/01/2025 19:10

I just caught up on this thread.

It could be because you've changed formula, the baby is adjusting and it takes a little while to poop. DD1 was the same.

You too. Admittedly I forgot the Grin but it wasn't said with any kind of malice.

mambojambodothetango · 27/01/2025 19:22

My first didn't poo for a week on several occasions and was fine. Just be ready for the poonami when it comes!

Kiffydedoodah · 27/01/2025 19:22

S/he is obviously an attentive father and partner being on here asking for advice.
A joke is a joke.

I would probably make the same joke and say 'my husband is changing that ine when it happens' etc...

Congratulations on your new baby. How lovely.
