Making formula

Confused about mixing formula… says it has to be over 70degrees … is adding formula to a freshly boiled kettle okay ? I checked the temp it’s 89.9 degrees and then stared to come back down

AnotherVice · 21/01/2025 17:22

No because that would destroy the nutrients as well as the bacteria.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 21/01/2025 17:24

It will take about 30mins for 1L of freshly boiled water to cool down to 70°

Changeofname2024 · 21/01/2025 18:56

How does anyone manage to wait for 30minutes with a hungry baby?

I've never understood this either, that's why I breastfed! There seems to be no safe way of doing it.

WannabeMathematician · 21/01/2025 21:25

You can ice bath it.

But I think that in all honesty, a lot of people secretly don’t follow the rules. I know I didn’t! We had a Tommie tippee.

MummaMummaJumma · 21/01/2025 21:27

The worst is when you’re leaving it to cool, step out of the room, someone else walks in and boils it again to make tea.

Boil the kettle, let the water get to temp and pop it in a flask. That’s your hot water for the day (or how ever long the flask keeps the water at temp).

MidnightBloom · 21/01/2025 21:30

My daughter in law bought some sorcery bottle it was like a Flask. You put the water in and in seconds it cooled it to the right temp.

I highly recommend one of theee kettles. It boils the water then keeps it at 70degrees for 24 hours.

then a nuby rapid cool flask to cool it down within minutes

I did a hot shot of boiling water, just enough to cover the formula powder, then added cooled boiled water kept in a jug in the fridge.

PP makes a good point about destroying nutrients. You could add a little cooled boiled water and some boiling to do a cooler hot shot, then more cooled boiled water.

Later, after 6 months, I did the hot shot of boiling water to kill bacteria and rest of the water straight from cold tap.

Newpillowtalk · 21/01/2025 21:49

TT perfect prep, gives you a hot shot to kill any bacteria, then adds a cold shot to bring it to the perfect temp for baby to drink. You can adjust the size of the feed and the water is filtered too. Saves so much hassle

And here comes the formula shaming. Of course there are safe ways to make up formula. Boiling water is completely safe but some of the nutrients are lost, and it can go clumpy. So it's not optimal. But it's ok and better than waiting 30 mins. As you start to get into a routine it's easier. My routine was to boil the kettle, let it stand for a bit, make up the formula and pop it in a jug of cold water. It took around 40 mins, so ok in the day when I could do in advance. At night I used ready to feed.
Then I found the perfect prep and honestly, best money ever spent.

meganna · 21/01/2025 22:39

Perfect prep all the way! Used ours for 2 babies and zero issues with it. My sister is a children's nurse and makes up a batch of bottles in advance and puts them at the back of the fridge. Not recommended but lots do it that way.

OtterMummy2024 · 25/01/2025 17:32

150ml bottle of formula:
100ml freshly boiled water
50ml tap water
Add formula powder

A 1/3 to 2/3rds mixture will be 70C and will be hot enough to kill bacteria in the powder. Stick it in a water bath or run it under the tap to cool.

Buy a nuby rapid cool

best thing ever! It’s a flask and you add the boiled water from the kettle and the formula and it makes up a bottle in a couple of minutes.
the nurses and midwives at the maternity hospital when I had my twins advised against Tommy tippy perfect prep as it doesn’t heat the water to a safe temperature. A friend of mine also advised against tit as it have her baby a bad tummy.
A nuby and a Milton cold water steriliser is all you need, trust me!

Bobbieiris · 25/01/2025 17:46

lol sorry I meant against it 😂

Of course there are safe ways as the majority of us use formula and have healthy babies.

Perfect Prep isn't as perfect as it should be sadly.

Most people I know do their own hot shot and add cool boiled water or they batch make for the day and put them in the back of the fridge.

Buy a hot water dispenser. You can set temp to 70° so always have a perfect bottle in no time at all

MidLifeWoman · 25/01/2025 18:07

Always have cooled boiled water in the fridge.
work out the correct ratios and stick them on the fridge.
Freshly boiled water plus however much cooled water you need for it to by just above 70 degrees. Add formula, mix, add more cooled water to get to drinking temp.
It sounds complicated, but once you have worked out your ratios your bottle making will take a minute longer than boiling the kettle.

Minesril · 25/01/2025 18:12

Once you're in a routine it gets much easier. You should use a bottle within two hours. So work out when your baby is likely to be hungry, minus about two hours, and make it then.

Agree that breastfeeding faux-naivety 'but how does it work!!!' can fuck right off (from someone who BF one child until he was about 3).

A study of 70 !! Perfect Prep machines are widely sold and successfully used. If they were dangerous they would be removed from sale.

Cot bumpers are also widely sold, it doesn’t make them safe.

They are banned in the US - didn’t realise other countries sold them.
