so why do people feel that they are ok to tell me that i am " making it hard for myself" or "stupid" to breastfeed. its hard enough as it is without every one giving me there fecking opinions...

have you seen this promotion which is local to you?

ninedragons · 28/03/2008 00:18

You need better friends. Real friends don't call each other stupid.

princessmama · 28/03/2008 08:02

I wouldn't critize formula feeding as it will just make them even more defensive. I would just talk about how easy and convenient it is not to have to sterilise anything, or to get out of a warm bed to prepare a bottle.

princessmama · 28/03/2008 08:04

criticise not critize

KK - what an inspirational site.

When ds was very young there was a very glamorous very young mum feeding at the same time in Mothercare - she had a 1 yo and was so confident and such a lovely mummy, it was really lovely to see

pud - keep going! Parenting does get stupidly competitive, but IMHO often the ones who start the competition are the really un-confident and self doubting ones as they have got something they need to prove to the rest of the world!

Caz10 · 28/03/2008 10:29

pud i know exactly how you feel! i have a teeny dd who wakes quite frequently for feeding - all of course my own silly fault for b-feeding her! i find i turn into a bit of a gibbering wreck in RL when talking about it, so now I just don't! DD is 15 wks, small enough to be about 10, yet friends are still asking why I'm "still" feeding her etc. I feel lucky to be able to bfeed after a rocky start, i feel it's the best thing for dd so i just smile snd say nothing!
good luck, i know what a horrible feeling it is.

Sabire · 28/03/2008 10:50

Celebs who breastfed: Madonna, Elle Macpherson, Angelina Jolie, Jerry Hall, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gwen Stephanie.

Celebs who bottlefed: Jordan, Kerry Katona, Britney Spears

Hmmmmmm............

No pattern there then......

nickytwotimes · 28/03/2008 10:54

Pud, they're being rotten. It's not their business. I only bfed ds for 2 weeks due to lack of support and attitudes like that - I had no mn then! DOn't let them discourage you. They probably do feel guilty. Anyway, even when ff, my lo was every 2 hours, night and day!

Poohbah · 28/03/2008 14:28

www.kellymom.com has a bit about countering negative comments and is quite a useful site in general.

CrushWithEyeliner · 28/03/2008 14:43

What about Charlotte Church Sabire? - she BF but where would she fit in with that "Madonna/Whore" polarisation of Motherhood you have going on there....

Poohbah · 28/03/2008 15:10

Charlotte Curch is a good welsh girl and therefore what we like to call "a good breastfeeder". Just because she swears and drinks a bit don't mistake her for a Kerry Katona. It would be culturally wrong.

CrushWithEyeliner · 28/03/2008 15:22

right, gotcha

hoppybird · 28/03/2008 16:31

I couldn't help but notice the irony of comparing celebrities based on whether they bf or ff, given the title of this thread.

hoppybird · 28/03/2008 16:33

(ie, it's not helpful - slebs are still people after all, albeit with more money and less privacy.)

tudorrose · 28/03/2008 16:45

it works both ways though! i would give anything to be bfing my little one but I cant - she is only 7 weeks and has just been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, she needs high calorie formula just to keep her weight up along with daily vitamins and antibiotics. Just breastfeeding is not enough for her. I went to a new toddler group this morning (to get my very busy toddler out of the house!) and i had a lot of snotty comments as i was the only mum there who wasnt exclusively breast feeding. I came home in tears. Please dont judge us for using formula, sometimes its essential.

tiktok · 28/03/2008 16:54

ack, tudorrose, that's horrible What exactly did they say? Did you tell them your baby had CF? Would you consider making a complaint to whoever runs the group?

tudorrose · 28/03/2008 17:03

One asked if knew i wasnt giving my baby the best possible start in life and didnt it bother me? That stung! I did say she had CF and there was a lot of apologising but quite honestly I just didnt expect anyone to be so rude in the first place! Will not be going back there.

tiktok · 28/03/2008 17:06

I hope the woman who said that is feeling like shit now....what a bull-headed thing to come out with.

tudorrose · 28/03/2008 17:46

Some people are just horrible i think!

PuppyMonkey · 28/03/2008 21:16

Re the ff or bf celebrity list mentioned by Sabire earlier... what kind of pattern is there to notice there then? Kerry Katona vs Angelina Jolie? I wouldn't want to be in either camp frankly...

Caz10 · 29/03/2008 09:26

for tudorose that is horrible. hope your dd is doing well.

to be honest i think there will always be someone who is low enough to comment on a baby's feeding whether it be breast or bottle. my situation has always been the opposite, only one bf-ing at these groups, and there's always someone feels the need to say something negative. i don't get it, they would never outwardly say "oh god your hair's a mess" or similar, even if they thought it, but baby-related stuff is apparently a free for all!

sandcastles · 29/03/2008 10:14

Sabire, on that list it actually says that Britney Spears breastfed!

Sabire · 29/03/2008 11:32

She never did!

I wonder if Jennifer Lopez is bf her twins.....

Or whether they're getting their formula from Roberto Cavalli jewel studded bottles!

Somehow I can't visualise JLo sitting on a sofa with a giant twin breastfeeding pillow on her lap.

Puppymonkey - you're right that I was insinuating that bf is classier than ff. It was nasty. Shouldn't have done it.

Poohbah · 29/03/2008 11:51

I never really come across snottiness regarding feeding from anyone other than my mother-in-law who I think has some issues about breastfeeding. Everyone here is much too nice. Come to Wales, we welcome everyone regardless.
