Inappropriate "advice" from baby food company representative?

First of all, apologies if this is in the wrong topic, wasn't sure whether to post here, in weaning, or AIBU, or even elsewhere.

I was in Tesco a couple of days ago, and approached by a representative from Cow and Gate asking "are you buying any jars today?" I answered politely that no I wasn't. (I don't have any issues with jars btw, I just tend to do a mix of mash and finger foods with dd2).

This woman went on to try and give me all kinds of advice, in a pleasant but fairly forceful manner. What worried me was that she said more than once that she had been advising some of the mums that once the babies reached 2.5 - 3 months or more, then it was fine to start them on rice if the "hungry baby" milk wasn't satisfying them. She claimed that "some of the mums this morning" had been told by their HVs that they should wait until 17 weeks but made it clear that she felt the HVs were wrong. She didn't mention breastfeeding at all. She spoke approvingly of the "good old days" when very young babies had rice or Farex in their bottles routinely. I briefly mentioned that dd2 had lasted on milk for 25 weeks (I didn't enlighten her as to whether it was formula or b/milk - not relevant particularly).

Anyway, I am not sure if I should complain either to her company or to Tesco. What I think is inappropriate is that she is telling women that weaning from around 2.5months - 3 months is fine. Also she seemed to be doing a bit of an advert for hungry baby milk.

I shall stop hogging your thread now, onepieceoflollipop . I sometimes get a bit, ahem, over-excited about this stuff .

onepieceoflollipop · 15/03/2008 20:53

Am going to find the Cow and Gate website now.

Thanks everyone

Isn't that potentially hazardous advice?

Isn't it the case that solids before 17 weeks or so can damage the kidneys?

Complain away.

onepieceoflollipop · 15/03/2008 21:05

Have e-mailed Cow and Gate. Am about to go onto Tesco website now.

Gosh yes, definitely complain. This sort of thing makes me so

Lulumama · 15/03/2008 21:31

let us know what happens!

onepieceoflollipop · 15/03/2008 21:34

Have e-mailed Cow and Gate.

Have been on Tesco website but can't see a way to e-mail them (unless I am being thick). I will have to write insteadn. Each time I press the option to "contact us" it comes up with phone numbers and addresses, not e-mail facility.

Will let you know if/when I get a response.

TWO months
Not sure if DS's eyes had even opened by then! He certainly wasn't showing any interest in solids!

chipmonkey · 15/03/2008 22:12

Good for you for complaining! I find it annoying enough that they are allowed to promote their bloody growing up milk without giving out wrong advice as well! Let us know what they say!

moondog · 15/03/2008 22:15

That is fucking ridiculous and illegal surely?
Good for you.
Oooh,I would so have loved to have bumped into her.

suzi2 · 15/03/2008 22:25

We frequently have these stands in ASDA. First time, I was given a freebie sample for DS (who was about 2) and she said "do you want one for the baby". I said "I suppose so, depending on the sell by". She said "How old is she". I replied "4 months" to which she said "oh she can eat these just now". I told her we weren't weaning until 6 months and she asked if she had medical problems. i said no, explained current advice and reasoning and she said "nonsense, no baby can go that long. Even though our packaging says from 4 months, it's quite safe to give her these from 2 months."

I gave her a lecture... told her if she was saying thing like that I'd be having words with her employer (no idea who that is lol) as the baby food manufacturer in question really wouldn't want to be known to be that blatant.

colander · 15/03/2008 22:35

Shop in Waitrose - then you don't have to put up with crap like that

itsahardknocklife · 15/03/2008 22:35

suzi - even though the packaging says 4 months you can give it at 2???!!! Crazy!
Glad the OP has complained to Cow and Gate.

Lulumama · 15/03/2008 22:38

that is terrible suzi2....

just abysmal that non trained, non medical, non aware of the guidelines people are being paid to promote this stuff

it is downright dangerous and irresponsible... i sense another nestle type scenario on the horizon

rrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrghhhhhhh!

CEO of tesco... if you fancy going to the big guns....

moondog · 15/03/2008 23:00

Worth getting advice from some of the b/feeding support groups (on the right of this page) re what legislation to quote. That always makes them worried.

Tesco don't seem to advertise their email on their website.....but you could try the generic [email protected] I do believe it is correct .

I also have good reason to believe that [email protected] works

Also if they have their email account set up right if you send an email to [email protected] even though Iamangry isn't a registered user onthe tesco's domain it should get diverted to a generic inbox (or at least it does for my own domain name)....

moondog · 15/03/2008 23:07

It is a major source of irritation to me that I have had nothing but unconditional support from everyone regarding everything to do with breastfeeding and avoiding the products flogged by evil multi-nationals.

Pmsl @ piffle, would loved to have seen that

that vunerable new mums are being dangerously mis-informed.

Please let us all know what responses you get.

PortAndLemon · 16/03/2008 00:41

If you look at www.tescocorporate.com it gives the Customer Services email as [email protected].

PortAndLemon · 16/03/2008 00:43

Oooh! Oooh!

Extract from Tesco's Corporate Responsibility Review 2007, section on health, nutrition and well-being:

"Like us, NGOs, socially responsible Investors and the Government are also increasingly concerned about health, nutrition and rising levels of obesity. The last year saw a range of high profile campaigns on health and nutritional labelling, new SRI reports on health reporting, and a new focus from Government on childhood obesity.

We are constantly trying to find new and innovative ways to make it easier for customers to live healthier lives, whatever their income or attitudes towards health. Our health strategy is based on three key objectives which are applied to all our operational plans:

Providing better health information
Making healthy options more accessible
Making it simpler to have an active lifestyle "

May be worth mentioning when complaining...

http://www.who.int/nutrition/publications/code_english.pdf The International Code for the Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes The UK is a signatory. read articles 5 and 8.2

A breastmilk substitute is any product which is intended to replace breastmilk. It bans the marketing of all supplementary foods for infants to 6 months.

I so wish you had taken out your mobile and asked her to pose for a picture at her station. Babymilk Action would have loved a copy.
