chocolate and BF'ing

tyaca · 23/02/2008 23:32

is there a prob with eating choc when bf'ing? i know someone who isnt and i wondered why... only thoughts i have is the caffeine content, or poss not wanting the baby to get a taste for sugar. are there any other reasons? also, if it is for the sweet tooth (gum??) reason, have many other BF'ers also avoided it?? tia

no problem at all
foods don't affect your breastmilk like that - useful information here.

in fact I maintain that chocolate is vital for successful bf

harpsichordcarrier · 23/02/2008 23:37

??
good lord no
I have been bf for five years and I would say chocolate is one of my major food groups
there is absolutely no logical reason for not eating chocolate

verylittlecarrot · 23/02/2008 23:38

I second that, MrsB

Chocolate is ESSENTIAL for bf

KristinaM · 23/02/2008 23:48

and i third it ( can you third soemthing???)

I've been Bf for 4 years and eat choclate, drink coffee and consume alcohol. the only thing i avoid is alcohol when pg ( except for the very occasional glass)

there is never a good reason not to eat chocolate .

gigglewitch · 23/02/2008 23:48

I totally agree that bfing justifies infinite need for chocolate
It may even mean that you make chocolate milkshake on tap

I think i had a chocolate flavour boob and a strawberry one. We used to joke about it - oh, xx must want strawberry tonight, she's refusing the chocolate one...
it must be right, those are her two favourite things

readytopop · 23/02/2008 23:49

I thought chocolate was a separate food group that we also had to have five a day of...

Maybe that is why my arse is 2 sizes bigger than the rest of me

KristinaM · 23/02/2008 23:56

you need a large bum when you are BF to balance out the huge norks. otherwise you would be unstable and blow over in strong winds

gigglewitch · 24/02/2008 00:04

love the 5 portions theory rofl

my postcard on the kitchen wall proclaims that the definition of a balanced diet is a piece of chocolate in each hand

readytopop · 24/02/2008 00:14

I've got that magnet!!!

lol at the reasoning behing the large bum, so accurate- 32G and expanding...

sushistar · 24/02/2008 00:21

It must be for the caffiene. It does have quite a bit - comparable to tea and coffee. I don't avoid it, but I am aware of caffiene (ie if I've already had lots of tea I try to eat less chocolate). I think it might make my ds wakeful - but maybe it's all in my head!

gigglewitch · 24/02/2008 00:25

chocolate makes mine sleep.

ok what i actually mean is, it makes me sleep. they just sleep anyway
too late to talk sense, sorry

readytopop · 24/02/2008 00:27

b/f sends me to sleep anyway, something to do with all the hormones.

Now a glass of wine about an hour before a feed..... BAD MOTHER!!!

sushistar · 24/02/2008 00:30

So chocolate WITH wine would sort of cancel each other out iyswim...

[sushi redesigns menu plan to take this important dietary requirement for breastfeeding mothers into account...]

gigglewitch · 24/02/2008 00:30

not a bad mother.

might make the baby sleep

ironically i just typed "gin" then

readytopop · 24/02/2008 00:36

that's the reason I enjoy the wine

Now a G&T at 6pm.... that makes bathtime so much less stressful. I was gutted when I found I was pg and had to stop

sushi- absolutely. although in my opinion a lot of chocolate is required to cancel out a glass of wine

gigglewitch · 24/02/2008 00:43

should start researching the possibilities of making chocolate wine

readytopop · 24/02/2008 00:48

that would be different. I've seen chocolate beer.

Personally I prefer the idea of chocolate and wine along the lines of cheese and wine. then you could have several different types of choc in one sitting...mmmmmmmm

EffiePerine · 24/02/2008 00:54

Actually, chocolate did seem to affect DS in the early months when I was bfing (as did red wine, grrrrrr). But a) he was a v colicky baby and b) it could have been coincidence but as he was SO bad at sleeping and crying anyway I tended to avoid anything that might make things worse.

Seems to have no effect now though, thank goodness (red wine intake has also been restored )

gigglewitch · 24/02/2008 00:56

now you've blardy well done it.
I always like chocolate-and-wine evenings
now i need some. had almost resisted ( both!) tonight
maybe just a teensy eensy bit...
BTW are you really ready to pop or have you, erm, popped

readytopop · 24/02/2008 01:02

Still expanding! DD was today, erm, yesterday now. I had been wondering, as it was quiet last night but I think it was just kicking the devil out of my back and I couldn't feel it.

Been on the choc off and on all evening, and spent the morning sampling wine in waitrose (I'm not really posh, it's just it was nearer, the Q's are shorter than somerfield and they have a loo, although how I managed to get myself, ds and dd in there is another matter!)

The wine was very nice, been ages since I last indulged. walked home propped up on the pushchair handle!!!

gigglewitch · 24/02/2008 01:23

alcohol in the mornings!! ooohhhh!!!
lol at the loos, two kids and good-sized bump barely fit in the average family bathroom let alone public loo!
heavens, the thought of it means we need more chocolate...

readytopop · 24/02/2008 01:27

I like living dangerously!

almost PMSL with the loos, well, almost PMS anyway!!! It was ok until they had the bright idea of locking the disabled and having the key available from customer services yeah, like I'm gonna toddle across the store and back to collect the key.
Bet the idea was thought up by a man.

Am on midnight munchies of yogurt, creme egg and coffee...

Hold on, I'll come over and join you on the other thread, we seem to have hijacked this one!

AlistairSim · 24/02/2008 07:05

I was told by a homeopath that eating chocolate whilst bf was a Very Good Thing, as nice chocolate-induced-happiness passes to the baby.

I beleive this in an almost religious way.

One of my best memories of my trying-to-establish-bf time, is my wonderful mum bringing me Green&Black's every day.

AlistairSim · 24/02/2008 07:07

Beleive is like believe, only slightly different.

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/02/2008 07:33

Is her baby milk intolerant tyaca? I had to give up milk and white chocolate for 18 months as dd was, but some dark chocs (inc G&B happily) are dairy free.
