Help! Have taken Anadin Extra (Aspirin) by mistake - can I really not BF and for how long?

Fool that I am, I have taken 2 anadin extra which contains 300mg aspirin per tablet as I had killer headache. DH put them back in paracetamol packet but I should have checked. My dd3 (almost 5 months) will be up soon for a feed - she has done her longest sleeping EVER, obviously sensing her idiot mother bumbling about taking inappropriate medications!

Can I safely feed her or do I need to wait, and how long? I know it says contra-indicated in BF on packet but wanted some expert advice from here - have no EBM left so might have to give her formula, which I would rather not if at all possible. They didn't even touch the bloody headache anyway.

Any advice very much appreciated.

Give NHS direct a call - they're rank, but until someone else comes along at least you'll know.

Kbear · 08/02/2008 07:33

If you are worried, a formula feed won't hurt while you're finding out the facts.

McDreamy · 08/02/2008 07:36

Have just googled it and it says that it reaches it's peak 3 hours after administration. That was on ivillage not a medical site.....NHS direct would give you more accurate advice I am sure.

McDreamy · 08/02/2008 07:44

Do you know how much aspirin you took? See the link here from NHS direct that talks about dosage at the bottom.

aspirin

Hi hhs, how did you get on? A one off dose is unlikely to cause problems. What did you do feed wise and when?

tiktok · 08/02/2008 11:25

Kbear - that is an extraordinary thing to say. How do you know a formula feed won't hurt? It could lead HHS feeling engorged and uncomfortable, at the very least....and she doesn't want to give it. Some babies may have a reaction to the formula, too.

HHS -http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/f?./temp/~rNUiUC:1 ToxNet is always useful as a site to check these things on, or go to the Breastfeeding Network site for good info.

You will be reassured that one single dose is not worth worrying about....

Thanks all for the speedy and reassuring advice - excellent link tiktok, shall bookmark that, many thanks.

In the end my very clever dear baby slept for 12 hours for the first time ever!! (usually 5 hours max.)Though I was up for most of that time holding my head and worrying about feeding her. I then managed to distract her from food by taking my older DCs to nursery and by the time we got back it was almost 10 hours since I'd taken them so felt happy to give her a mammoth feed - my norks were exploding from lack of attention

I was very glad not to have to give her formula, just my personal preference as I have BF til now, but have learnt a lesson about having some EBM around just in case!

Thanks again for all your help and advice, headache starting to recede but walked to nursery in sunglasses so other mums have me marked down as an unmitigated pratt, no doubt!

I am so glad HHS. Paracetamol or Ibuprofen (if you can take it) are fine next time you have a stinker.

HammerHeadShark · 08/02/2008 15:55

Thanks for checking in Jennster - how kind . Headache almost gone, DD3 feeding like a demon - perhaps she will treat me to a big sleep again tonight, but expect it was a one off!

Thanks again to all who answered my thread - wish I had discovered Mumsnet years ago.

I did this too. My dh gave me Aspirin and I didn't even check, thought he kenw I couldn't have it and bf.

I was advised not to bf for 4 hours as after that time it would have worked it's way through my body. I expressed the first lot of milk after that and threw away anyway.

My dh, drove my dd around in the car to try and keep her asleep and it did work.

I remeber how worried I was though although my dd is 4 this year.

lljkk · 08/02/2008 21:03

Isn't the risk only theoretical, anyway? That a tiny bit of aspirin in mother's milk might create a risk of Reyes syndrome, I mean. Are there any documented cases of it causing harm? It wouldn't even cross my mind to fret about it as a one-off.
