Which formula should I use?

ThomasTankEngine · 02/02/2008 22:20

I've been breastfeeding DS for 9 months.

He now breastfeeds on waking, after his lunch time sleep and before bedtime.

I am going to give him formula before his bedtime.

Which should I give him?

Take your pick....people have there preferances cos some caused green poo in their LO, some caused constipation in another persons LO.

Try one and see

skirmish · 02/02/2008 22:36

totally agree with shrek...both mine have been on aptamil, but they both much earlier than your ds will...sma gave my ds horrid vile smelling green poo, so it just goes to show how different each LO is!

FAQ · 02/02/2008 22:40

I agree with Shrek too.

DS2 and DS3 both been on SMA - no problems, although we thought that DS2 wasn't getting on so well with it when he was little.

We switched to Aptamil - and switched back a day later as he HATED it!

Dalrymps · 02/02/2008 22:44

my ds was constipated on sma, fine on aptamil....

wildwoman · 02/02/2008 22:46

I'd start on "first baby milk" whichever brand, not hungry or follow on

ScoobyDoo · 02/02/2008 22:46

Sma was awful made ds sick, i used Aptamil.

Eddas · 02/02/2008 23:04

IMO each baby is different. I used Farleighs for dd and aptimal for ds(our local supermarket only stock a few and stopped selling farleighs so choose the other for ds) be prepared to try a few before you find the one your ds likes. But i can't speak highly enough of both brands i've used. DS didn't get on with aptimal follow on. dd never had follow on milk. So I'd say whichever you choose make it first stage. HTH

They're all pretty similar. I linked to a table that showed their contents the other day - will try to find it again.

Is he OK with a bottle?

There's a chance he might not take it, whatever you give him, if he's used to bmilk.

wildwoman · 02/02/2008 23:08

they aren't that similar. People may think prebiotics are a gimmick but the y make a huge difference ime

SlightlyMadShrek · 02/02/2008 23:14

Agree with Wildwoman.

the prebiotics =make a huge difference. When C&G increased the amount of prebiotics DD3s foul green oos got worse and worse so I switched to SMA which doesn't (didn't?@)) have prebiotics in and was fine.;

colditz · 02/02/2008 23:15

SMA made both mine miserable. Ds1 was great on C&G, Ds2 settled eventually for Farleys.

wildwoman · 02/02/2008 23:16

foul green poos aren't always a bad thng, except for the nappy changer!

hunkermunker · 02/02/2008 23:21

Prebiotics aren't licensed for use in New Zealand, iirc, because of concerns over their safety. Just because they make poo more like bf poo, it doesn't mean that the way they do it is the same as bmilk.

wildwoman · 02/02/2008 23:23

Ihave had way too much wine to challenge you hunker but just because it hasn't been proved in a certain counrty doesn't make it unsafe.

colditz · 02/02/2008 23:30

I've never managed to find a table of contents, distressingly.

FAQ · 02/02/2008 23:31

pra/pre/pro/pri/pru whatever you want to call them "biotics" are a pile of shite.

A huge marketing con to make us spend more money.

Doesn't matter what you do with formula - it's never going to be "just like" breastmilk - and therefore you shouldn't expect FF babies poos to look like BF babies poos!

hunkermunker · 02/02/2008 23:33

Table comparing formulas here

WW, I'm not convinced by all these novel ingredients in formula. Look at night-time milk, for instance - they add stuff to milk so they can market it in ways that might just give them the edge over their competitors - their first thought is profit, not benefit to babies.

FAQ · 02/02/2008 23:33

night-time milk WTF is that?

wildwoman · 02/02/2008 23:34

no faq but you can aimto make something closer to perfection without actually reaching it. Otherwise we might as well have carried on feeding babies sugar water.

hunkermunker · 02/02/2008 23:36

FAQ, it's got potato starch and rice flakes in it. (I said potato flakes and rice starch last time and gave everyone visions of Smash!).

It's being marketed as "part of a soothing bedtime routine" for babies over 6m. But it'll be touted round mum groups as "that milk you can get wot fills 'em up for longer so they sleep all night" and people will give it to newborns, you mark my words.

FAQ · 02/02/2008 23:36

so what - are they going to come up with some magic formula that changes to meet a babies needs??????

hunkermunker · 02/02/2008 23:37

WW, but how do you know that prebiotics in the form they're currently being put into formula is "closer to perfection"?

FAQ · 02/02/2008 23:37

blimey HM - hadn't heard of that one!

wildwoman · 02/02/2008 23:38

what is the age suggestion on "night time milk"?

hunkermunker · 02/02/2008 23:39

WW, babies over 6 months. But it will be given to babies younger than that.
