Hello everyone!

Our LO is 5 weeks old today.

Has no problem feeding. Was advised to put her on SMA comfort for constipation - still feeds fine! 4oz (I feed on demand) she 99% of the time takes the whole 4oz - takes a little more effort to burp her she hates parting with it. But the last feed around 10pm she burps etc and afterwards is just so unsettled. Has infacol before each feed also. Screaming the place down, you can see she's tired also, is soothed with lower back rubs sometimes but usually has us up till 6:30 with her being unsettled... no problem during the day... but after this feed, why is it like this??

Has anyone else had this happen to them?

TIA

If she is taking the whole 4oz most of the time is she maybe still hungry and needing a little more ?

We've tried everything - we had her on 4 oz and we had her on 5 oz - she is a hungry baby, and because she's so young we weren't sure if we should give her 5oz... it's driving us mad. You reckon it could be that she's just still hungry?

I always was baby led on how much they wanted. Signs of ready for more per feed was finishing most / all feeds. The guidelines on the tubs are just that but if you think she’s a hungry baby I’d try more per feed and see how she goes.

Does she settle after other feeds and is she going longer at nights between feeds ?

PritiPatelsMaker · 22/11/2022 19:47

How are things now @NaatQ968?

Have you tried her with 5floz?

I've had a pretty bad 24 hours... 5floz does her for a bit and then it starts again! Thank you so much for asking 🥺

Yes the full 5oz!

So I wouldn't worry about over feeding right now. Babies can often "catch up" and move up a centile or two and then stay there, some, like my DD drop a centile or two and then stay there.

Babies should never drain the full bottle, there should always be a little left. So if she's draining 5floz, it's time to try 6floz.

Cas112 · 22/11/2022 21:15

Yes the full 5oz!

If she's taking 5oz then keep her on 5oz, we had baby on 6 by 6 weeks cause he's greedy.

Heath visitor advised it was better to do that than go on hungry baby formul

upfucked · 22/11/2022 21:17

Feed on demands means they choose to stop feeding. If they drink all the milk then you should be offering more milk.

N4ish · 22/11/2022 21:17

Just keep offering more until it’s clear she’s had enough, I wouldn’t worry about overfeeding. Could be just a growth spurt and she needs more than average for a few days.

I fed her 5oz before and she was still very agitated so I made another 3 oz and she took 2.5oz... I shouldn't be worried about over feeding?

She has been a hungry baby since birth, I just don't want to be doing something bad for her!

Yes it certainly seems she's a lot hungrier at night time... or does it mean that she's not getting enough during the day and I should up it every feed? Or just night time?

Absolutely not. Sounds like she's screaming because she's hungry.

At 5 weeks you definitely don't need to worry about over feeding.

Up all the feeds to 6 floz and see if she's more settled.

Underfeeding would be bad for her too though?

KickboxingWanker · 22/11/2022 23:16

Just a thought, maybe she has silent reflux. Babies sometimes feed more to try and sooth the pain which can cause more problems.
does she arch her back or go red in the face?

hope you get to the bottom of it, if it carries on see your gp.

Quitelikeit · 22/11/2022 23:19

How often is she taking a bottle? Every three, four hours?

I agree with others keep feeding her

you are feeding her during the night I take it?

Quitelikeit · 22/11/2022 23:21

Actually reading back it seems you are not feeding her during the night

you know babies wake through the night for a feed? Sometimes twice?

if you have been trying to get her to go from ten until 6 without a feed then no the wonder she’s screaming and can’t sleep

ladydimitrescu · 22/11/2022 23:29

Agree she's hungry. Up her oz in the daytime as well if she's taking it. And as pp suggested, at 6 weeks she should still be feeding through the night a couple times.

Yes, every feed. Keep offering her milk until she stops drinking it. Has someone made you worry about over feeding? There’s really no need to worry, as long as you’re not forcing your baby to drink they will regulate the amount they take in. You mention constipation earlier, could this perhaps be linked to her not getting as much fluid as she needs?

She doesn't do neither...

If it doesn't go away GP will be called.

Oh yes I feed her throughout the night I don't just leave her to it.

But she feeds whenever she is hungry really... it's horrible because people give conflicting advice (older generation saying only feed every 4 hours and nothing inbetween)
