Baby drank 2oz water before formula

So DS (10 months) was playing in his room while I made him his bed time milk.
I saw that he drank 2oz of water out of his sippy cup when I picked him up. I waited like 10 mins to give him his bottle but now I'm worrying that this is going to be similar to diluting his formula.

I googled it (I know I know...) and all I see is water intoxication 🙈 and now I'm panicking a little bit

He's had a total of 24oz formula and 5oz of water today.

Do you think he will be ok? I'm an anxious mess like 99% of the time and it always seems to be at bed time when we're all going to be asleep 🙄

OP he will be fine. Really weird that you would be even slightly worried about this. Doesn't he drink water?

cheekychaplin · 18/02/2022 21:39

He will be absolutely fine

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/02/2022 21:41

He will be fine.

ShallWeTalkAboutBruno · 18/02/2022 21:41

He will be fine. Babies of 10 months are supposed to drink water. They also eat food which contains water.

Queenfreak · 18/02/2022 21:41

Water intoxication is far more likely to occur in breastfed babies, as far as I understand it, and in babies who are not yet weaning.
At 10 months he will be fine xx

Alfixn · 18/02/2022 21:42

150ml water in a whole day (or even in one go) is quite far away from causing water intoxication OP. Don't waste another second worrying about this

dementedpixie · 18/02/2022 21:49

It's more of an issue in younger babies who are only having milk. I assume your ds is eating food as well as drinking milk and will be absolutely fine

youhadmeatjello · 18/02/2022 21:51

Ah op I’ve been where you are over many things. The worry we talk ourselves into is horrid! But like other posters say he will be completely fine. DS was a big water guzzler at that age and drank more than that before formula many times!

emetophobe12 · 18/02/2022 21:58

Thanks all.

I honestly don't even know why I worry so much. Currently waiting for treatment because it's so exhausting ☹️ I'm a massive overthinker too which doesn't help (in every aspect of life not just motherhood)

But yes he is eating a great amount 3 times a day. I know he's supposed to drink water. Just worried me slightly that it was immediately before his formula and thought this would be the same as diluting 🤷🏽‍♀️

@youhadmeatjello it's horrible isn't it. I absolutely hate it. I wish I was more laid back about things and stop worrying over the slightest possible things

Logically, why would it matter when he drinks the water?
Diluting formula is mainly an issue for babies who are still entirely milk fed.

NotAloneButLonely · 18/02/2022 22:26

Over diluting formula is only an issue as babies (just milk fed, not yet weaning, usuallly young babies) would essentially not get the calories and sustenance they need from the same volume of fluid.

If your baby took his whole bottle of correctly prepared formula and 2 oz additional water then he’s just had a Brucey bonus of extra water because he’s still had the same nutrients/calories etc from his normal volume of formula.

This isn’t the same as a baby who is having over diluted /incorrectly prepared formula - for example a baby that was on say 4 oz bottles - but repeatedly only having it made up with 2 scoops rather than the required 4 - then that baby is having the same volume but far less calories and nutrients - that would lead to poor weight gain/failure to thrive etc and the associated issues.

The water intoxication is a bit of a different thing I believe and takes a lot more volume to over load the kidneys and is just to do with far too much fluid in general - and certainly doesn’t happen often in babies/children/adults who drink/feed orally.

This. It’s a total non-issue.

And sending you best wishes with regards to your anxiety and treatment OP x

emetophobe12 · 18/02/2022 22:45

@NotAloneButLonely thanks for this. Really helpful.
During my Google session I saw that an 11 month old had water intoxication from drinking bath water... so I'm assuming she must have drank A LOT for that to occur then?

OP posts:
NotAloneButLonely · 18/02/2022 22:51

Yes likely the baby in your article drank a lot… or even more likely things were mis-reported and she had something else - an ongoing health condition that already put strain on her body and kidneys, drank a vast quantity of something else in addition to the bath water (?shampoo etc) , drowned rather than drank it.

I promise, your little one will be absolutely fine from his little extra water xx

NotAloneButLonely · 18/02/2022 22:59

It would be very very difficult for a person with no underlying health issues to get water intoxication.

And again, if the child in the article drank enough bath water to come close to intoxication … then they sadly weren’t being adequately supervised in the bath, which then raises that there must have been other concerns too.

I hope you manage a good rest OP and our words have been enough to reassure you Flowers

BunnyRuddington · 19/02/2022 00:14

Just wondering why a 10 month old is having 24 floz of formula when the recommendation is 13.5 floz?

Your baby will be fine but I think it's time to start cutting back on the bottles, afterall, once LO is 12 months they'll only need 10 floz a day of full fat milk.

Have a look at this guide from page 77. It will give you a good idea of how much milk and food they should be having each day Smile

Thatsplentyjack · 19/02/2022 07:36

@BunnyRuddington, can you come and tell my 12 month old that please. She's on about 30iz of milk a day because she basically doesn't eat any food. If I iy gave her 10oz of milk a day she would starve.

Thatsplentyjack · 19/02/2022 07:41

But actually on the NHS website it says to try to give you baby at least 12oz of milk per day, but up to 24oz is fine, and that's for a 12 mo th old child. They might only need 10oz per day by a year old, but it's fine to give them more if they need it.

emetophobe12 · 19/02/2022 07:44

@BunnyRuddington because that's what he wants. If he wants it I'm not going to deny him of it just because the guidelines say he doesn't need it. If I don't give it he turns into a devil and won't stop shouting/screaming until he gets it. Even after food. Every child is different. Some want more, some want less 🤷🏽‍♀️

OP posts:
BunnyRuddington · 19/02/2022 07:53

I'm sorry to have to break this to you but children often want things that aren't recommended. If give them things because they scream or shout for it, you're going to have a really rough ride when they get to the teen years and they're physically stronger than you abs want money for drugs or alcohol.

emetophobe12 · 19/02/2022 07:58

@BunnyRuddington ok I think formula and drugs are very very different. Just because I allow him to have something he wants (that isn't going to harm him in any way) doesn't mean I'm going to let him have whatever he wants with everything else

This is Mumsnet at its absolute finest.
emetophobe12 · 19/02/2022 08:00

Or more so that he needs (he actually doesn't like his milk so when he wants it he obviously needs it so I'm not going to say no)
