Used Aptimil - DS was tube, bottle and breast fed. Then soley bottle fed from 6 weeks. At our hospital the formula came in made up glass bottle - one use - you just added the teat. Didn't need to provide bottles or formula. I have used the steri-bottles for travelling and they are very good. I bought Aptimil from Waitrose, Tesco, Boots and Sainsbury. Good luck when babes arrives

Bex22 · 21/11/2007 20:16

all this very interesting but can anyone help me with a baby who seems to hate the formula I'm offering him (Aptamil). He#s been breastfed till 6 nmonths and I would really like to stop now but the little tyke is really turning up his nose at his lunchtime alternative!!! It is making me feel incredibly guilty and emotional- any point changing brand?

MaeWest · 21/11/2007 20:19

Bex - this is quite an old thread, may be best to start your own?

Bex22 · 21/11/2007 20:33

Thanx Maew, have posted variations of this on several threads!!! Just want some advice!!! Feel a bit on my own!

hazeyjane · 22/11/2007 13:04

I would try a different formula Bex22, I know they are all supposed to be the same, but my dd1 was definately a bit happier with Aptamil than Cow&Gate. Maybe get some of the RTU cartons and try a different one for a few days, to see if he prefers it. My dd2 has been on Aptamil, but I think that it has just started disagreeing with her (she is 6 months too), so I am thinking of trying the Hipp Organic follow on milk, although I don't know much about follow ons so maybe I'll start a thread about that! I hope you find something to suit him.

mears · 22/11/2007 13:08

Bex - if he doesn't like it, try another. Aptamil is not anycloser to breastmilk than the others.

Remember that soon you will be able to start dropping breastfeeds once solids are established. Seems a shame that you have come this far and that you might have a struggle with your baby to stop.

Do you feel you want to stop completely or just reduce. Do you enjoy any feeds at all?

lenaschildminding · 22/11/2007 13:12

I used Hipp Organic, it's one of the cheaper ones and the ingredients are the same as the very expensive cow & gate comfort formula which is recommended for babies with constipation. It was £4.99 a tin in comparison to £7.99 for the comfort milk!

I did use SMA with my boys, I think it's down to whatever suits your baby.

lenaschildminding · 22/11/2007 13:16

Bex, have you expressed and bottle fed DS? Just wondering if it's the milk he doesn't like or just drinking it from a bottle instead of breast?

Bex22 · 23/11/2007 19:52

I have switched to SMA and he seems to be taking a few sucks more- and Iam having a bit more luck with a bottle as opposed to cups. Having said that, only got him to take about 40ml from bottle at lunchtime. He is eating loads so do you think he just doesn't need to drink so much now? I don't want to put him off his Doidy which he has been using really well for water. I think he really just misses the breast.

have really enjoyed feeding him, but at the same time I want to get my periods back and start trying for next...had loads of fertility issues and took years having him so feel a bit under pressure.

Anyone on formula tell me how much milk they manage to get their baby to drink at this age (6-7 months). Mine always possets after a breastfeed anyway and then is sick sometimes too- can't believe he is actually taking that much from breast.

mears · 24/11/2007 13:29

If he is eating well he won't need milk at avery feed. You could probably give a drink of water or juice with his lunchtime meal.

He is at the age that milk can start to be reduced.

The thing about breastmilk is that babies get more than you would ever think. He will probably take less formula in comparison.

You may find that you periods will come back when you have dropped only a couple of feeds - you never know. I myself got pregnany when breastfeeding a 7 month old.

Bex22 · 24/11/2007 19:51

Took 180ml tonight from Daddy. I felt relieved but so tearful. At least I have the morning feed to look forward to.

lenaschildminding · 28/11/2007 13:37

My dd had two 8oz bottles from around 7 months, one when she woke and one before bed. She drinks water during the day.

TaliasMum · 07/06/2008 21:36

Have just read through all of these in the hope of finding an alternative formula to try, as my 6 month old refuses SMA Gold and Aptamil. I don't recall seeing Hipp Organic milk anywhere, though - can anyone recommend where I can get it?

hazeyjane · 07/06/2008 22:20

I've bought it in Waitrose, and Tesco and Sainsbury's (online). You can also order it online, from their website www.hipp.co.uk/shop/index.html

tittybangbang · 07/06/2008 23:39

I'm appalled at the whole concept of disposable bottles. I mean - newborns can get through 8 bottles a day if they're only having small feeds. What with that and their disposable nappies - Christ, they'll only be a few days old and they'll already by shaping up as mini environmental vandals!

Sullwah · 08/06/2008 12:39

You can get disposable pre-made cow and gate bottles from ASDA.

You just screw on the teat, feed the baby and then chuck the whole thing out. No sterilising or any other fuss. Its sold in boxes of 12 and marketed at something to use in the early days.

Fantastic idea - I dont know why the other brands dont do this too.

We got back from hospital with two 5lb babies with no idea how to use the steriliser or make up bottles as I assumed I would be breastfeeding.

It is scandalous that more information on formula feeding is not available pre-birth. I was in tears as I could not use steriliser, did not yet know how to use expressing machine and could not breatfeed (BTW - feel no need to justify why not - so please dont ask) and had two crying babies wanting to be fed.

Sullwah · 08/06/2008 12:44

Tittybangbang

  • if you are a first time mum with no idea how to make up bottles or use the steriliser and have just got back from the hospital and are knackered and got two babies who need to be fed - then frankly the environment is not the first thing on your mind!
tittybangbang · 08/06/2008 13:45

Sullwah, while I've got every sympathy for new mums who find themselves in your situation, bog-eyed with tiredness and stress trying to care for their tiny new babies, my heart sinks at the thought of all those hundreds of thousand of extra bottles that will inevitably end up in landfill sites if disposable bottles become the norm: it's all our children who'll have to deal with the mess we're making of the planet. People have rubbed along just fine without chuckaway bottles so far and you've got to draw the line somewhere!

Also wanted to comment that first time mums who are bottlefeeding should have been shown how to make up feeds by a midwife before being discharged from hospital. If this hasn't happened then this is genuine cause for a complaint to be made.

Plus - ready made formula (recommended as safer anyway for newborns)?

And am I being unfair to question how difficult is it for two adults to work out how to add an appropriate amount of water to a steriliser, stick the bottles in upside down and either a) plug it in or b) put it in the microwave? It's not like having to put together a flat pack wardrobe is it?

"It is scandalous that more information on formula feeding is not available pre-birth"

There is plenty of information available on formula feeding, if you seek it out. But there are also very sound reasons for not formally teaching all mums, including those who intend to breastfeed, about how to use formula, as part of an antenatal education package. We've discussed this issue on this board many times.

misdee · 08/06/2008 14:00

the throw away bottles have been around for years. i know they were about when dd2 was tiny, as had to get some once or twice when out longer than expected. i also kept one in my bag with a carton of formula for dd3 when dh in was ICU as wasnt sure if she would need feeding whilst i was visiting dh, and my dad was looking after her in the hospital grounds.

i did find they leaked laods though/

LIsa310874 · 25/06/2008 23:38

SMA Gold have throw away glass bottles and teats which are fab for newborns - check out the ocado website!! No sterilising needed. Wasteful but who cares when you're so tired your eye lids won't open xx

suzi8 · 01/07/2008 20:36
