my daughter is just 7 months and i still breastfeed her in the morning and mid-afternoon with a bottle at bedtime. but i'm getting a lot of people expressing surprise that i'm still breastfeeding. I didn't think 7 months was particularly old or counted as 'extended' breastfeeding, but then, most of my mummy friends i've met since having my baby (she's my first) all stopped at 6 months so i'm feeling unusual. wondering what age anyone else stopped?

footnote - baby still loves it, but she's too distractible to feed anywhere that isn't very quiet anymore so i tend not to be able to feed her easily in a cafe etc like i could when she was tiny! also wondering if anyone else found this?

also, she's on 3 good solid meals a day with sips of water with them.

thanks.

needmorecoffee · 22/12/2007 19:00

12 months qwith dd1, 12 months with ds1 and 4 years with ds2. dd2 stopped at 5 months for medical reasons and I still feel bad

brusselbeansprouts · 22/12/2007 19:00

Ds is 3.2 and still feeds. I thought he might stop at some point during this pregancy, but he hasn't (I am now 34 weeks).

FrannyandZooey · 22/12/2007 19:00

nearly 4 y o

chocolatecoinmumofdj · 22/12/2007 19:24

wow sorry hijacking my ds is one today and I feel shy that im still feeding though we dont feed in public anymore - do you feed your older children, in partic the over 2's publicly? also do older children tend to take a good long feed when their bigger or just a wee short feed sorry sounding dim

Haylstones · 22/12/2007 19:25

17/18 months

FrannyandZooey · 22/12/2007 22:09

I sometimes fed in public, or sometimes found a private spot, or told ds to wait a bit, when he was older

the longer I carried on though, the more I realised that the earth was not going to stop turning, even if I did breastfeed my older child in front of other people

a big toddler having some milk is a lot less annoying and disruptive to life than a big toddler having a meltdown, and the first can often prevent the second

Domesticgodlessyemerrygents · 22/12/2007 22:15

isn't it a shame that people feel they have to take public disapproval into account in their feeding decisions for 'older' children. I understand why women bend to the pressure and constant looks/questions, but it makes me with our messed up social priorities.

BroccoliSpears · 22/12/2007 22:15

14 months. She just lost interest and gave up. I've heard that 14 months is too young for her to have self-weaned, so perhaps I could have forced the issue and kept going, but it seemed to suit her to stop then so we did. She's never asked for milk from me since, though she loves her warm (cows) milk in a sippy cup.

2 and a half, 1 and a half, nearly 3 and still going strong at 2 and a half.
Older ones can empty a breast quicker than tiddlers, but like to loiter for comfort

ArtiChokesOnTheWishbone · 22/12/2007 22:22

14 months. i was aiming at 6 months but we both loved it so carried on. it was a lovely way to stay close when i returned to work. at 12 months i started to get a few raised eyebrows. at 14 months dd seemed to develop a take it or leave it attitude and i felt it was the right time for us to stop. she is 16 months now and if she sees my bare breasts she stares abd stares and then tries to kiss them .

abibatousmum · 22/12/2007 22:22

I am feeding my dd at 10 months and intend to feed her for at least a year- but may well for longer, will see how we feel. I work full time so she feeds morning and twice in the evenings and weekends, and during the day in the week has expressed milk in a cup. It has really helped us both to cope with me working full time, and I have not had any negative comments, although I feed her in public often, especially at the nursery when I pick her up. The staff and the other mums have been really nice and I have had lots of encouraging comments- although I do feel a bit self conscious that we are the only ones who are ever doing it! I have been a bit surprised about how many women stop bfing at 6 months- I love bfing her and she is also very keen- she would not have been at all ready to stop at 6 months, especially with the adjustment to starting at nursery. The feeds are geting shorter now and she takes very little during the day when I am at home.

crokky · 22/12/2007 22:25

stopped at 12.5 months. got a lot of pressure from people to stop, but also wanted to TTC again so I did not stop only due to the pressure from others, but it was a significant factor.

SantaKLAWs · 22/12/2007 22:28

about 8 months with ds

15 months with dd, we were down to a feed before bedtime just and she was happily eating good meals and plenty yoghurt, loves her drinks of milk also so one day we mutually agreed that she didn't want a feed from me before bed... When I say "mutually" I mean that she did not miss it but I did!

I could have gone on longer.

mylovelymonster · 22/12/2007 22:28

DD is almost 12months and am planning on continuing. Generally at bedtime and first thing, and before afternoon nap although I'm going back to work in NY so afternoon feed will go. Know very few mums who have bf at all and only one who went beyond 6 months. It's wrong for anyone to make you feel strange about continuing as long as you feel you want to.
BF has lots of benefits. Don't be put off because you're finding you're a rarity.
I've not been able to feed dd in public since she was 3months as she would be too distracted.

HunkerGotLeprosyFromAFact · 22/12/2007 22:30

DS1 - 17 months.

DS2 - still going at 23m.

HunkerGotLeprosyFromAFact · 22/12/2007 22:30

I am of the "feed 'em till they stop wanting it" school of bfing though.

themoon66 · 22/12/2007 22:35

read thread title and thought... hmm, think I was 32.

EachPeachPearMum · 22/12/2007 22:37

LOL- me too! (well actually 33, but erm...)

17 months here- she was down to 2 bfs morning and evening, and cows milk in the day whilst at nursery.

Pannacotta · 22/12/2007 22:39

DS1 was 2 when he stopped - he self weaned when I was pregnant.
Am feeding DS2, 7 months and plan to breastfeed him unitl he wants to stop.
