my daughter is just 7 months and i still breastfeed her in the morning and mid-afternoon with a bottle at bedtime. but i'm getting a lot of people expressing surprise that i'm still breastfeeding. I didn't think 7 months was particularly old or counted as 'extended' breastfeeding, but then, most of my mummy friends i've met since having my baby (she's my first) all stopped at 6 months so i'm feeling unusual. wondering what age anyone else stopped?

footnote - baby still loves it, but she's too distractible to feed anywhere that isn't very quiet anymore so i tend not to be able to feed her easily in a cafe etc like i could when she was tiny! also wondering if anyone else found this?

also, she's on 3 good solid meals a day with sips of water with them.

thanks.

MulledWino · 23/12/2007 00:16

I think it's maturing Manchita.. or at least mellowing somewhat..

DD 7 months
DS 29 months

I fed both wherever whenever. Including DS in church at a christening when he was 2 to keep him quiet

The only issues I had were in the early days with both when my milk would spurt great distances when they bobbed their heads off. It occasionally 'got' people

It is about "need", but in a visceral manner, not in a selective sense. "Why do x when you can do y?"

You are meeting a "need" in the simplest, most comforting way you can when you b/feed a child.

"got people.."..>

in answer to the OP? Dd was last breastfed when she was about 3yrs 6 months..her choice to stop.

VVVExcitedAboutChristmasQV · 23/12/2007 01:05

Had to double take then

I thought you said you had b/fed DD till she was 3yrs 6mths........

twentypence · 23/12/2007 01:08

Another anti toddler feeding thread? Is there something in the milk water?

I agree with everything bero says.

I think MulledWino you are confusing those of us who are comfortable with public toddler feeding with people who have fixed ideas about how bf works. If you don't want to feed your toddler out and about but do at home great whatever works for you.

I don't care if you bf the same as me. I do care very much that those who have a thinner skin about public bf feel supported and comfortable so they can feed their child anywhere and when they want to.

Im still bfing my 10 month old and plan to continue until he self weans. If you are feeling a bít 'odd' and unusual in your group of friends, try going to a la leche league meeting - i feel like a bit of a freak at the baby clinic i go to, but a the lll group its wonderful as i feel so normal!! Plus its encouraging to see other mums feeding older children, and they may have a library - ive borrowed quite a few books which have strengthened my resolve to continue until ds is ready to quit himself. Good luck xx

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 23/12/2007 13:28

i didn't breastfeed for long but if i had the chance again i think i would have to draw the line at 5.

MerryXMoss · 23/12/2007 13:32

Teehee I read the thread title and thought, "I'm not sure. My Dad reckons I stopped breastfeeding when I was about three or four weeks old, as my mother had problems and they swapped to ff."

I'm still going strong with ds, eight months old, and in an ideal world would like to continue until he wants to stop, but realistically I will continue until one of us wants to stop, even if that's me; if the latter's the case I'll wean slowly & gently though.

I'm tandem feeding. My DD1 is 25 months, and DD2 is 7 week old

Tandem here also, DD 37 months DS 9 months. DD stopped from Jan 07 (26 months)- May 07 but has since started again and had a little snack at bedtime tonight. More for comfort than anything else I think in her case (and mine).

ds1 was only bf for 10 weeks - I was 15 and had to go back to school. Tried expressing for a fortnight, but it wasn't exactly practical.........

dd1 was 13 months(ish)

ds2 was about 16 months

ds3 was about 13 months and dd2 is nearly 9 months, and still going strong!

DD was FF, I BFed DS until 9months, partly because I had no idea how to stop biting, partly because I had ato go back to work, but I had a HUGE stock of ebm in the freezer so gave that until 11months.

Pg again and planning to bf til at least 2years this time.

PortAndLemonaid · 06/01/2008 20:04

DS mostly self-weaned at 2.10, when I was 22 weeks pregnant or so, but at nearly 3 still nurses occasionally (maybe once or twice a week)

Donk · 06/01/2008 20:15

4.1 yrs - Self-weened when DS had a bad cold and bf-ing became too much hard work for him. He was only having one bf a day by then (and had been for the last year).
