Warming formula in microwave

I know you're not supposed to, but a friend said it was OK as long as you just use it to take the chill off, and shake the bottle thoroughly to even out the temperature - also check the temp carefully too obviously.

Does anyone else do this? If so how long do you heat for and on what setting?

Please don't jump down my throat BTW - I haven't done this myself yet, just asking

have to confess i do do it; i just put it in for 10 to 15 secs on full (just long enough to take the chill off)

cockle · 15/11/2004 14:51

Thanks for the confession M2S!

Thread on this a while back so think we'll get some negative comments on here.

Ho hum.

Can we do ANYTHING right?

nailpolish · 15/11/2004 14:53

yes i do this.

didnt at first but do now for all bottles. as far as i was told the only reason not too is because it creates 'hotspots' what rubbish - just shake the bottle

put it in for 20secs shake the bottle another 20 secs (for a 6oz bottle)

nailpolish · 15/11/2004 14:54

probably not gobbledeggok

Angeliz · 15/11/2004 14:55

i never did it but think i might get tempted this time for speed, (in the night at least- don't want the new one waking dd!!!)

lolliepops · 15/11/2004 14:56

i did it all the time with my dd i lasted till abou 3months of heating the bottle with a jug and water, but my dd didnt sleep through till she was 9mths and i couldnt have coped without the microwave some nights!!please dont shoot me down in flames it didnt do her any harm and each to there own

Gobbledigook · 15/11/2004 14:56

Oh, our poor uncared for children.

Bottle feeds, heated in the microwave, dummies, smiles and fish fingers for tea....blimey, I'm surprised I've not had Social Services round

MarsLady · 15/11/2004 14:56

well no matter what anyone says, 5 kids later, still doing it when I need to heat a bottle or something. Kids all fine. Shake bottle, test temp, feed baby.

hana · 15/11/2004 14:57

I do for cow's milk for dd before bed - also shake the beaker. Never understood about hotspots , surely they disappear with a vigorous shake?

Gobbledigook · 15/11/2004 14:57

In fact, a friend has always done hers in a jug of boiling water. Her baby might have been safe from burning but not my friends toddler who pulled the jug of boiling water over himself because the very responsible (NOT) woman had left it on the hearth of the fire.

DUrrr.

MarsLady · 15/11/2004 14:59

angeliz. with the dts I just boiled the kettle before bed, left formula in plastic tub (measured out) so that when dh woke he mixed them together and fed the babes. My breast milk is tepid so didn't see the need for the bottle to be any other way. Saves stubbed toes in the dark, fiddling about and midnight tears (from dh)

Angeliz · 15/11/2004 15:22

I think i'll get a corner of our bedroom set up ready
I'm looking for quiet nights !!

cat82 · 15/11/2004 16:00

I do first thing in the morning after the water has sat freezing in the kitchen all night. for around 15 second. Shake thouraghly, test, shake more and re test. Seems fine so far!

Distracted · 15/11/2004 16:06

I started using jug of boiling water with first dd, but soon switched to microwave and used it all the time. Am now using it again for ds (now 5 weeks old).

The reason not to use microwaves, as nailpolish says, is because it can create hotspots as it doesn't heat evenly. All you have to do is shake the bottle and then you have no hotspots. You can also test the temperature on the inside of your wrist - but that is no different to heating using a jug of boiling water.

WideWebWitch · 15/11/2004 21:11

I warm dd's bottles in the microwave for 25 seconds on high and have done since she was born. I shake well before giving it to her. Can't imagine doing anything else. First time round I had a bottle warmer that took 5 minutes to get a bottle warmed up while I fretted about my bawling baby. Mad!

vict17 · 15/11/2004 21:14

There was a previous thread on this and someone said that microwaving formula can destroy some nutrients I think

joash · 15/11/2004 22:33

There is another way.
Let's say that you're making up an 8oz bottle.
Make up the formula in advance with the 8 scoops and only 5oz of water. Keep made up bottles in the fridge as usual and when needed simply boil the kettle and add the other 3oz giving the finished feed a good shake(make sure you measure using another sterilised bottle). The temperature was perfect all of my kids. It's trial and error for other amounts, but a great way to produce quick feeds.

wobblyknicks · 15/11/2004 22:35

What I always did was make up bottles of boiled water and put that in the fridge, then when it came to feeding time, just add more boiling water until it gets to the temp you need, which also allows you to tip some out, then add the powder.

linnet · 15/11/2004 22:46

I always warmed dd1's bottles in the microwave, she never came to any harm. We just put the bottle in, took the teat and the ring part off then put it all together and gave it a really good shake.

With dd2 we don't warm her bottles at all never have done. I just make them up with the water keep them at room temperature and add the powder as neccassary, much easier in my opinion especially when she was tiny and feeding during the night. also really handy when we're out.

KristinaM · 15/11/2004 22:57

I used to do it similarly to WK - just made up bottles of water only, then added boiling water and powder. This works well if your baby doesnt drink the same number of bottles each day - you don;t have to worry about a bottle being made up for more 24 hours.

Not sure if I've explained that very well???????

wobblyknicks · 15/11/2004 22:58

That way also means you have plain water to hand too if needed!!!

snowmoon · 21/11/2004 21:22

I have always used the microwave to heat up the bottles. I put it on for 20 secs and give it a good shake to get rid of any hot spot. My DS is 4 months and is a chubby healthy boy so I doubt if doing this deprives him of nutrients in a signficant way. I think sometimes we can get a bit paranoid about these things

albosmum · 21/11/2004 21:26

2nd child always used microwave - just shake the bottle well. I don't think they have suffered

Bozza · 21/11/2004 21:52

I put DD's 7 oz bottles on medium for a minute and then shake. I know this sounds like a lot but I find that she does like her milk and solids quite warm. Despite my breast milk only being body temperature as someone pointed out below.
