that's the same situation as me.

ds 6mo, today he had:

toast (cut into soldiers) for breakfast
baby cereal for lunch
a few cooked carrots from our dinner, some of dh's yoghurt.

he has had them all before, i would introduce one new thing at a time.

have no system to what i'm doing, just giving him some veg from what we're eating.
will prolly wait for a while before introducing meat.

TheIceQueen · 17/12/2007 20:54

we're doing a combination of BLW and spoon feeding with DS3 (6 1/2 months) but no pureeing....

Think the only thing we've avoided so far is the honey

5goldrings4MONKEYBIRDs · 17/12/2007 20:55

omg can i come for dinner @ yours?

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 21:00

yes you are most welcome monkey
lady how does your ds eat toast ? does he have teeth or does he kinda suck it ?
i just can't imagine dd eatting food

Yep you need at avoid honey for the first 12 months because there is a very rare chance of it containing a botulism toxin which is lethal to little ones but harmless to older children and adults (strange but true ).

When your DD is older honey will be of good benefit as it has proven antibacterial qualities - great for sore throats and coughs.

I think your DD will lead the way with regards to the weaning. I was V nervous when wening DD1 but she was on toast etc almost straight away (sucking it) and she coped well. DD2 is still having problems now at 19 months as she has a v strong gag reflex. You'll get more confident as you all progress. General rule is to introduce things one at a time so you can check for allergies but once you know she is fine with carrot (for eg) you can then use carrot and parsnip blend etc. Try to get as much range as possible - you'll be glad later when she becomes a picky toddler.

I found the Annabel Karmel Book 'feeding your baby and toddler' a really good help as it give recipes from day one of weaning to school age plus wekly meal plans, lunch box ideas, what to feed when ill etc.

coby · 17/12/2007 21:21

please excuse poor grammar, spelling and punctuation - I click on mumsnet and my grasp of the english language seems to immediately leave me

whomovedmychocolate · 17/12/2007 21:23

DD ate proper grown up suppers from day one (well when she was six months naturally!) Tonight she had chicken tikka masala (a saltless version I make) with banana (she likes weird combinations.

Basically apart from feeding them salt, honey and blue cheese or raw meat/fish (we give DD rare roast beef with no probs), you can't really bugger this up. Your LO will only refuse or chuck up what doesn't work.

Although I'd avoid citrus for a year or so, it can give really bad nappy rash and bananas aren't that digestible for some babies to start with - DD has only just started eating them after rejecting them for eight months - they used to make her fart a lot too!

onepieceoflollipop · 17/12/2007 21:23

Hello tastychristmas pud.

You have asked what I was going to ask on her in a few weeks.(my dd2 is 4 months this week, so we should be thinking about weaning mid-Feb I hope). Like you (I think) I love the idea of BLW but wanted to know if it could be kind of combined with the odd puree.

I was worried about making some terrible faux pas by mentioning blw and purees in the same paragraph. I will follow your thread with interest and take notes.

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 21:31

oh thanks so much for help

do you know if nuts are ok
i take it peanuts are best avoided but what about pine nuts and macadameima nuts mmmm i love them

also macadamia nut help milk production if anyones interested

think ive got food on the brain today lol

hi lollipop hope this thread helps you too

I do both - BLW and purees. The way I see it is as long as my dd is eating a healthy and balanced diet it does not matter how she is getting it. I do BLW at breakfast (toast, fruit) and then at lunch (sandwiches, yoghurts, fruit etc) but at dinner time she has pasta etc. I usually give her some kind of fruit puree straight from the fridge as she is teething and she likes it. She is now 10 months and so I just give her the spoon. It is messy but she is getting the hang of it!!!

whomovedmychocolate · 17/12/2007 21:35

Macadamia nuts also turn you into a fat person But they are nice I agree.

I avoided nuts entirely until the end of year one - obviously there is a risk of choking. We tried Nutella (hey shoot me it has hazelnuts in and they like it) and that went down well after that, and then moved onto peanut butter. You can also sneak ground almonds or hazelnuts onto porridge.

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 21:40

yeah lol esp the chocolate coated ones

but they are bloddy lovely

OP posts:
5goldrings4MONKEYBIRDs · 17/12/2007 22:12

whaddaya mean turn me into a fat person?! If I am one already will they have the opposite effect...?

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 22:37

well they may help lower your cholestrol monkey

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 17/12/2007 22:42

Actually monkey that was quite funny - diet macadamia nuts. Now that would be good. Actually the late Dr Atkins used to suggest them as a diet snack

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 17/12/2007 22:43

the only potential 'faux pas' about mentioning BLW and purees together is that that's really just weaning as it's supposed to be done anyway.

the whole thing about BLW is that you kinda back off, but no matter, at 6 months your kid is likely to be absolutely fine with a mix of mash and finger food, it was just in the old 4 month etc days that the business of pureeing and baby rice was relevant.

and dd was eating pork loin at 6 and a half months, we've never added salt to cooking here so it wasn't ever a problem to just give her our food from the beginning. good luck!

Twinklemegan · 17/12/2007 22:50

Just to point out, purees aka spoon feeding and baby led weaning are pretty much mutually exclusive. You can do a combination of purees and finger foods for sure, but that isn't baby led weaning. The point of baby led weaning is that the baby pretty much controls its own diet and food intake.

I did purees and finger food btw - I wasn't brave enough to take on BLW but I might next time.

Tastychristmaspud - strangely enough, I would actually recommend the Gina Ford weaning book because it contains a fair amount of useful information regarding the issues you mention. IIRC, they can eat almost anything from 6 months apart from the obvious no no's like nuts, seafood, honey and some others (memory is failing me). Small amounts of herbs should be fine, as should a little garlic. I think I'd wait a bit before introducing something like curry because her little tummy mightn't be ready for it just yet (just think of the nappies ).

Twinklemegan · 17/12/2007 22:53

Oh no Aitch, you've caught me treading on your toes . And I know you'll hate me for mentioning GF (double ).

tastychristmaspud · 17/12/2007 22:57

aitch are you still there ?

OP posts:
PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 17/12/2007 22:58

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 17/12/2007 22:59
