They advise only paracetamol. Even strepsils aren't recommended. Have you tried steam? Lemon and ginger drinks? I think a bit of olbas oil or similar in the same room is fine but actually ingesting stuff is not recommended.

belgo · 02/12/2007 16:13

not decongestants. sorry! I did take a low dose of ibruprofen whilst bfing. tried to bf just before taking it, but only when I was really ill. mostly i stuck to paracetamol

robinredbreast · 02/12/2007 16:27

i had morphine after a repair after childbirth operation
and antibiotics so i was kinda thinking if i can take morphine while bf id be able to take some sudafed

should i have taken morphine while bf

I had morphine while bf, and I don't think you are strictly meant to, but don't fret

definitely no decongestants though

try inhaling steam (with menthol if you have any) - hang over a bowl of boiling water with a towel over your head, this will clear your sinuses

to shorten the cold take elder berry extract from health food shops - also can be used as preventative if you feel a cold coming on, or are around lots of ill people

FrannyandZooey · 02/12/2007 16:31

oh I had morphine for same reason robin! I thought they were giving me some codeine, I nearly died in the morning when they said "it was morphine and no you may not have any more!"

ibroughtxmascake · 02/12/2007 16:33

Why no decongestants?

I have been taking them all week and breastfeeding [worried]

FrannyandZooey · 02/12/2007 16:38

What sort are you taking cake? I know you are not meant to take Lemsip, for instance, because it has a decongestant. Sorry I don't know why - I was just told not to when I asked at the pharmacy.

robinredbreast · 02/12/2007 16:43

oh franny what happened to you? if you don't mind me asking ?
i had a horrible 4th degree tear and pph
tell me to mind my own business, i won't mind

how did the morphine effct you ? i didnt effect me at all, i didnt get get a nap out of it

. can you not inhale vics sinex while b/feeding? I'm afraid I did !
I find taking hot baths incredibly soothing when I have a cold, and they do clear the sinuses for a bit.

Stefka · 02/12/2007 16:48

oh no - I have had both lemsip and strepsils the last couple of days. What will it have done?

robinredbreast · 02/12/2007 17:21

Stefka and franca although they are not recommended I think it's because they actually haven't been tested, not because they've found they cause any specific problems iyswim. Falls into that grey area of 'we don't know so we won't say it's safe'. I know many, many bfeeding and pregnant women who have used decongestants to no ill effect.

Stefka · 02/12/2007 18:31

Thanks. I will stop using it now but would hate to think I had done some damage or something.

FrannyandZooey · 02/12/2007 18:54

I have this vague idea decongestants could adversely affect milk production? Please don't quote me as I have no idea if I am right. It obviously hasn't happened to any of you who are bfing and using them. I would phone a chemist if you are worried - they always give good advice.

Robin no I don't mind at all. (everyone else look away if squeamish or just don't want to read in depth discussion of my fanjo ). I had an episiotomy and was stitched, then a few days after, most of the stitches just fell out. At that point it was a relief (they had been so tight and painful) I didn't realise anything was wrong until about ten days after ds was born when the midwife said everything was just loose and not sewn up at all. They advised me to just leave it! Dp had a look (I couldn't face it) and said very tactfully "well it is up to you of course but I would REALLY REALLY get them to do something about it." So went in and was cut and restitched again. The pain when the spinal wore off was something else. Hence the morphine, which was FAB and I just sat in a lovely haze and held ds and am surprised I didn't drop him really.

franny that sounds like a horrible experience, thanks for sharing it with me though

FrannyandZooey · 02/12/2007 20:34

LOL sorry I got a bit carried away didn't I? Sorry to hear about your more serious experience. Mine was mostly cosmetic according to the midwife who said "well unless you have a second career that I don't know about, who cares what you look like down there?"

francagoestohollywood · 02/12/2007 20:37

Thanks showofhands

robinredbreast · 02/12/2007 20:43
