According to a pharmacist I know on another site you can take Sudafed with pseudoephedrine, but you have to use it very sparingly because it can affect your milk supply. I have used it with no bad effects but my dd was over 1yr.

This is from Kellymom

"Mom's use of many forms of Sudafed, Dimetapp and Actifed are considered to be safe for the breastfed baby, but always check the active ingredients, as there are many versions of these medications.

Sudafed (pseudoephedrine, a decongestant) and Actifed (pseudoephedrine plus triprolidine, an antihistamine) are reported safe for baby, and both pseudoephedrine and triprolidine are approved by the AAP for use in nursing moms and pass into breastmilk in minimal amounts.

Milk supply: Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) may reduce milk supply. Thomas Hale Ph. D., a renowned breastfeeding pharmacologist (Breastfeeding Pharmacology), has recently said that he recommends using caution with Sudafed or any product containing pseudoephedrine:"

Blimey - last time I had a cold I took sudafed (but then did read that I shouldn't, so stopped), and I've been drinking copious amounts of lemsip for the last 2 weeks . Maybe that's just another reason to consider why dd has been wanting to feed constantly . (She is nearly 22 months, so sure it's not the end of the world).

How old is your dc rrb?

robinredbreast · 02/12/2007 21:20

hi can't sleep, dd is 5 months
she seems fine so far shes asleep in bed, im praying she won't catch it

Just pure nosiness - when you buy something at the chemists, do you not say "is it ok to take this while breastfeeding?" I am surprised how many people are taking stuff apparently without checking.

robinredbreast · 03/12/2007 09:05

hi franny if i went into a chemist i would ask, but when i was in hosp i just assumed that they knew i was bf so any med they gave me would be compatabile iykwim

just been looking at morphine while bf on the net, on
www.drugs.com/morphine.html
says
Morphine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby

do you think the drs should of given us both morphine while bf
if i knew there was any risk at all to my baby i would not of taken it, but i was'nt think straight and just assumed it must be ok as they know im bf

Franny - if that Q was to me, then yes, I do check when getting stuff from chemist, but when I get lemsip from supermarket shelf I don't. Actually, come to think of it, I'm sure that Boots told me a while ago that it was ok to take sudafed, and 2 types of nasal spray, and something else whilst bf (had horrendous sinusitis) .

When dd was tiny I wouldn't take anything for anything, but am a bit more relaxed (rightly or wrongly) now dd is older.

FrannyandZooey · 03/12/2007 11:24

I meant anyone, CSWS, there seemed to be lots of people saying "Oh I didn't know I was not meant to have X". But I hadn't thought that you can get Lemsip and stuff off the shelves, I was thinking about getting stuff over the counter at the pharmacy. I think you are right about it being less relevant as a child gets older, but I suppose it depends what exactly you're taking.

Robin I also looked it up after I got home, and no, from what I read, I don't think they are strictly meant to give morphine to bf mothers. I didn't even know what I was being given! they told me they were going to go and get some codeine, and then came back with a big injection. Bloody lovely though. Ds is 4.5 now and has not suffered any ill effects at all. I am sure we are not the only bf mothers who have had morphine. I just wouldn't make a habit of it.

robinredbreast · 03/12/2007 13:35

franny -hopefully we will never be in the position to be offered morphine again

except if we fancied a chillout lol

I was told by my GP the only thing I could safely take was paracetamol. I had really bad hayfever this past summer and was told I couldn't take any antihistamines at all either
