i am planning on bf certainly longer than 6 months, how fucking rude!
she also said there is no health benefit after 6 months

COMPLAIN!

hercules1 · 07/11/2007 19:58

You need to write a letter of complaint. Nothing will change otherwise.

2Happy · 07/11/2007 19:58

gruesome? And her justification? Oh yeah, she probably watched that extended bfeeding prog on channel 4!!

robinredbreast · 07/11/2007 20:01

already have lol

also about my own hv!
as according to her all babies should be on soilds by 20 wekks at the latest!
wtf
my hv thinks she knows more than the doh

oh dear think im gonna get a rep as a trouble maker lol
but these attitudes of so called professionals ....suck!

I wish I could say I was surprised.

cmotdibbler · 07/11/2007 20:02

Oh fgs . Obviously the milk just turns to water at 6 months. And my lovely 17 month old is totally gruesome.
Any reasoning given ?

LittleBella · 07/11/2007 20:03

Piss poor.

Piss poor.

And normal.

robinredbreast · 07/11/2007 20:03

made my intensions quite clear when she said this, that as i found bf so hard to establish why would i want to give formula now that im finally there and surely the bf can only get easier after dd starts on food as she wont be quite so demanding for milk

OP posts:
robinredbreast · 07/11/2007 20:05

no reason just that it gruesome ! no facts,no research ...just gruesome

Shocking advise ....... though sadly not shocked that you heard this as I have experienced this many times.

Jacanne · 07/11/2007 20:20

I'm feeling pretty depressed about the stuff I've been reading about HVs, GPs, BF support groups etc and breastfeeding/weaning. My God, no wonder the BF figures in this country are so poor - it should be a rare thing to come across but sadly seems too common.

VictorianSqualor · 07/11/2007 20:21

According to the NCT feeding for between 6-12 months Lowers risk of eczema now and up to three years old plus lowers average blood pressure in later life.
Gives mum less risk of osteoporosis in the long term
Then after 1 year
Studies show greater influence on obesity for babies who are breastfed for longer.

But of course, that isn't benefits, no, not at all

I'm really shocked by the amount of crap advice being given out by health professionals and posted about today tbh!

Evenhope · 07/11/2007 20:21

After reading threads like these I realise that I must be really lucky with my HV. Wasn't impressed with her to start with (she seems a bit drippy) but when I took DD to be weighed at 6+ months she asked how I was feeding her and said "oh lovely. You're quite a rarity you know. Have you started on solids yet?' I told her we'd only just started (at that point) and she wasn't taking much and she said it was early days and BM was the main part of her diet.

Sorry, not bragging- just pleased

katpotat · 08/11/2007 13:27

My wee one really not that interested in soilds yet, so i am happily continuing to bf (in public too!) so many people think it is shocking to carry on...... sod them (and your HV) we are doing what suits us.....good luck

monkeybird · 08/11/2007 14:03

I'm hoping to BF for much longer than 6 months this time - because my previous two who were weaned at 9 months and 6 months (because I had to go back to work and didn't know how to integrate extended feeding into my life) both had shocking and persistent chest complaints (not quite asthma but never ending night coughs every winter for three years each)

This time (at last!) I know better and believe extended feeding will help when I have to go back to work and DS3 hopefully will be able to fight off bugs - after all isn't that one of the reasons the WHO is supporting BF until 2 years across the world?

GreenGlassGoblin · 08/11/2007 14:05

my 20 month old DS and I would love to come along and gross her out. Available anytime... ('muk, mummy, muk. Mmmmmm)

Tommy · 08/11/2007 14:11

yes - let us all know when and where and we can all come along with our breastfed gruesome big babies and really gross her out

kiskidee · 08/11/2007 15:50

go for it monkeybird. dd is in nursery as i work and i expressed all her feeds till she gave them up. she gets a fair few runny noses but has never had some of the rattly chests i have heard on some of her nursery friends (knock wood).

DaddyJ · 08/11/2007 16:06

Where do these people get their information from??

Well, 16 months down the line and my girls are still
happily engaging in that gruesome act every morning
and every evening and, quite frankly, long may it last!

HeadHeartorHormones · 08/11/2007 16:06

Rightly or wrongly - if that is your view why on earth would you become a HV and run bf workshops? An abuse of her position me thinks.

EffiePerine · 08/11/2007 16:09

Monkeybird: I went back to work at 6 months and stopped expressing at about 10 (at that stage DS was fine with milk morning and night and water during the day)

HeadHeartorHormones · 08/11/2007 16:10

Oh - I see a 'weaning' workshop. No. On second thoughts my original points remain. Is there no continual training and review processes for MWs and HVs. For every brilliant one I've met there has been another to horrify me.

supermum02 · 08/11/2007 16:21

I sadly had bad hv, 3 in all! 2 ignored the fact that I had post-natal depression even tho I'd asked for help! I ignored 'professional' advice on bf and fed my ds until he was 2 and dd until 2 1/2 . I think it's the best feeling in the world and once established so easy, no sterilising etc etc. I do think you have to be determined tho and I was adamant no formula in the house!

supermum02 · 08/11/2007 16:27

HeadheartorHomones; don't get me started on midwives! After 24hrs labour my mw told me I was having the wrong kind of contractions, sent my husband home and told me to go to bed!

HeadHeartorHormones · 08/11/2007 16:42

Oh - so sorry to laugh at your misfortune but that has truly tickled me. I do hope you put her straight. Back to the career choice again aren't we - should clearly be working for British Rail (or whatever its called these days).
