Infant feeding

I don't want to give up Bfeeding, But I don't know what to do..

As many of you know, I had my second son 3 weeks ago at 33+5 weeks. I was expressing for 10 days till he came home and have been fully BF-ing since. Callum is not gaining weight, in fact he has now lost weight, and weighs less than when he left SCBU and still isn't back to his birth weight.

SCBU nurse came yesterday and re-inserted his feeding tube, because she wasn't happy with his weight. She knows that he is getting my milk as when she inserted the tube, milk came back up it. I just don't know what to do. I have Bf all my kids and I love the closeness it gives. I feels so sad

i was expressing more than they needed in SCBU, When he left there, they gave me 10 bottles of my frozen milk back. So i know i can produce enough.

mears he has been home 11 days. he has been weighed 4 times since leaving scbu, always naked.

Am now at that, but am a mum 1st and mw second, thats how to keep human I feel ! I love looking after families and their babies, and I was a mum struggling to BF my 1st and remember very well how encouragement really helps alot. I know its not your 1st babe SGK but that is a great thing as all your experience will help you feed this little one perfectly.

Mears are you not going to Scottish Christmas meet up - I really want to go but no one from our neck of the woods seems to be going and I dont really know of any1 from down our way apart from you?

Since milk production is not the problem then it is calories into baby. Your milk can supply those calories - it is just a case of making sure enough milk gets in. Formula will not improve the situation IMO.

It may well be that he needs to get more calories by being tube fed at the moment because he isn't sucking well enough. That will improve. One breast usually produces better than the other - my right one tended to be the 'dribbler' - much more effort required there.

He is bound to have gained weight by Thursday - have faith. Try not to get too worried at the moment (hard i know).

SGH have you got someone looking after you at all? Or are you looking after all your little ones as before and feeding Callum too ?

Ah good, the experts also can't see any reason why formula would make weight gain better than EBM.

It's lovely that you are working so hard to give him the best start sparkly.

DH is here. We are fulltime carers for the older 2, who are disabled. The kids are very good and let me feed Callum without hassles

Sounds like you are doing a great job - sparklygothkat! - sorry dont have any advice to give but loads on here do - I wouldnt have got this far (8 months) without mumsnet!

Thats great, you sound like a lovely family, Callum is a very lucky boy. Just as mears said, have faith, Callum will start to gain soon and I am sure you will be feeding him for a long time. It is so normal for us all to have wobbles at times, your instinct is telling you that BF him is the best so feel good about going with it.

doesn't help when people in RL keep telling me that my milk is ov. not enough and I shuld bottle feed him

I know, its so lovely when people make unhelpful comments!! Remember you are an experienced mum, and you are the expert on your children, little Callum may need expressed milk top ups after feeds for a few days but that really will be all... Once the action of feeding does not tire him as much he will be just like any other BF baby, feeding on demand and putting weight on day by day. Your milk is just what he needs, it is perfectly designed just for him. Did you know that breastmilk of mums that deliver early is actually richer than breastmilk of mums who deliver at term! How clever is nature!!

I never knew that, I know that Dd1 (who was a 31 weeker) put on weight very fast..

I know our bodies and our babies are amazng It is soo good that you have exprience of little early babies too! Callum picked is mum and dad carefully me thinks.

Lending you support SGK. My ds was born at 36 weeks so not as early as your son but he was really slow to get into feeding and had jaundice, low blood sugars etc etc. He had EBM top ups for two weeks and eventually was back to birth weight. He then gained weight really slowly and crawled along the bottom of the graph ... BUT at 6 months he had a massive growth spurt and got to the 75th percentile. Give it time your baby was even earlier and will take longer to get back to birth weight and then pick up. Have confidence in your own gut feelings.

well he put on 2 1/2oz!! the tube has to stay in site till he is feeding better, HV said that he was only feeding enough to keep himself going but not enough to put on weight, so until he is strong enough to take more milk, we must keep doing the top ups. But fingers crossed i can keep my supply going with feeding and pumping.

Excellent news - can't see what the hv is complaining about. 2.5 oz must be a pretty hefty proportion of baby's total weight and it's going in the right direction now.
