Ff newborn overfeeding?

Kaceywd · 22/09/2020 22:22

Hiya,

My ds is 5 weeks and ff. We tried breastfeeding but for many reasons we had to give up. He was born 8 lb 6 oz and dropped a lot of weight when we tried to ebf so we had to give him formula to catch up. I don't know if that's what caused it but he's never satisfied! He's fed on demand anywhere from 60ml (2oz) to 180 ml (6 oz) depending on how long he slept for or how long it's been since he last fed. He must be around 10 lb 3 oz now. It's frustrating because he keeps feeding but doesn't sleep and it's a vicious circle really. He has reflux (he's on gaviscon) so we have to burp during feeding, after feeding, keep him upright and then when he's sleepy and about to doze off he gets hiccups (after every feeding) and he's wide awake again. I'm sure he's hungry as I always try everything else before I feed him (check if he's hot/cold, change nappy if needed, patting shushing, burping, rocking) but he acts like he's never fed before even if he just had a bottle 10 minutes ago. He finished an aptamil box in 4 days and he sleeps 8 hours on a good a day. I'm worried about him and obviously formula is expensive as well so if he's using it for comfort I'd like to change that.

Let me add that even with all the burping he's still extremely gassy which wakes him up and the only way for him to pass gas is to feed for some reason. Could it be milk intolerance? Drinking more to help fix a problem that milk creates in the first place?

Gaviscon may not be working for him. Drinking milk may be helping soothe the heartburn while he is drinking. How much is he taking in 24hours?

Kaceywd · 22/09/2020 22:53

@dementedpixie I don't know exactly as it varies daily but probably around 2lb

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 22/09/2020 22:54

2lb? Do you mean 21oz or something else?

Kaceywd · 22/09/2020 22:56

Sorry the lack of sleep and being used to the metric system is a bad combination! Around 35oz

Ah bless him. My boy was like this. It sounds like he's gulping formula to soothe the reflux pain. He may need meds. How much does he take in on a daily basis

Maverick66 · 22/09/2020 23:03

In my experience he is trying to ease his reflux.
Go back to your gp and get an alternative to gaviscon such as omperazole. Gaviscon must not be easing his reflux.

If he is constipated or passes smelly gas then that suggests an intolerance.

Kaceywd · 22/09/2020 23:09

@Babysharksmom around 35 oz it varies daily though.

@Maverick66 he has smelly gas that has gotten worse lately ☹️ will the Gp accept that as a symptom?

OP posts:
Kaceywd · 22/09/2020 23:18

@Maverick66 also even though his poo is normal he strains and cries a lot trying to go

Babysharksmom · 22/09/2020 23:21

Would Def get him checked again. We had a wonderful paeds team in my local hospital. They will help you if gp wont

Kaceywd · 22/09/2020 23:23

@Babysharksmom how can I contact the hospital to be seen without a referral?

OP posts:
Maverick66 · 22/09/2020 23:33

I would say smelly farts are definitely a symptom of something not right in the gut such as lactose intolerance or cows milk allergy which will mean he needs a prescription formula .gaviscon can cause constipation so again I would advise you to speak to health visitor or gp.
DO NOT be fobbed off. You know your baby and you know he is in pain or discomfort.

Maverick66 · 22/09/2020 23:37

Do you notice him turning his head from side to side? This is one of symptoms of reflux.
He'll be more comfortable if you can prop head of his cot up.

Kaceywd · 22/09/2020 23:38

@Maverick66 thank you x it's frustrating because no matter how much I try they have these automatic responses

OP posts:
Kaceywd · 22/09/2020 23:38

@Maverick66 we have propped it up :)

Unfortunately it's trial and error and finding what works best for your son.
But be persistent don't let anyone fob you off and especially not if this is your first baby.
Baby omperazole and prescription formula is where you will finish up but unfortunately you will have to go through hoops to get there.

Maverick66 · 22/09/2020 23:44

Nutrimigen formula will help with his digestion and be easier on his reflux .it is available to buy but is generally prescribed by doctor.

Kaceywd · 22/09/2020 23:49

@Maverick66 it's my first baby yes

I will ask for the medicine and the formula and hopefully will get prescribed tomorrow thank you!
@Babysharksmom how can I contact the hospital to be seen without a referral?
I went in through a and e department.
We tried them all nutramigen, and neocate. Nothing worked. I had given up when I was told about nanny care. It's goats milk based. My boy had colic and reflux. Explosive diarrhea extreme pain screaming the entire day.
I was told he had cmpi - the colic and reflux were as a result of his cmpi
It was honestly torture. I definitely have ptsd after it all. Please make sure you have a good support system around you to take over for a bit to give you a break

But ultimately its about your little baby and trying to get him pain free. Don't be fobbed off

Babysharksmom · 22/09/2020 23:55

Also insist on omperazole

Kaceywd · 23/09/2020 00:01

@Babysharksmom wow sounds like torture and your ds must have had so much pain! How is he doing now?

I will persist for the medicine

OP posts:
Kaceywd · 23/09/2020 00:01

Insist sorry x

He's 13mths now. Happiest child ever!
It will pass but I hated hearing that at the time.

Kaceywd · 23/09/2020 00:10

@Babysharksmom aww lovely bless him!

Maverick66 · 23/09/2020 11:14

I agree with @Babysharksmom it does pass as baby gets older.
I also agree with having support in place.
Explain your baby's symptoms clearly and if you are having difficulty getting through to your dr then go through health visitor.
