Ff newborn overfeeding?

Hiya,

My ds is 5 weeks and ff. We tried breastfeeding but for many reasons we had to give up. He was born 8 lb 6 oz and dropped a lot of weight when we tried to ebf so we had to give him formula to catch up. I don't know if that's what caused it but he's never satisfied! He's fed on demand anywhere from 60ml (2oz) to 180 ml (6 oz) depending on how long he slept for or how long it's been since he last fed. He must be around 10 lb 3 oz now. It's frustrating because he keeps feeding but doesn't sleep and it's a vicious circle really. He has reflux (he's on gaviscon) so we have to burp during feeding, after feeding, keep him upright and then when he's sleepy and about to doze off he gets hiccups (after every feeding) and he's wide awake again. I'm sure he's hungry as I always try everything else before I feed him (check if he's hot/cold, change nappy if needed, patting shushing, burping, rocking) but he acts like he's never fed before even if he just had a bottle 10 minutes ago. He finished an aptamil box in 4 days and he sleeps 8 hours on a good a day. I'm worried about him and obviously formula is expensive as well so if he's using it for comfort I'd like to change that.

Hi all I need your advice.

We saw the Gp who said it doesn't look like reflux it's probably intolerance. He said he car prescribe formula but it's not good quality and to buy it ourselves.
Do you have any recommendations? Hypoallergenic or lactose free, soya? I'm lost ☹️

It is very expensive to buy yourself. Soya is not first choice so don't buy that. Lactose free is pointless if its dairy allergy. Get a prescription for a dairy free formula

Kaceywd · 23/09/2020 19:38

@dementedpixie does what he said about quality make sense or did he just avoid prescribing? We need to buy him something now until we get to see the Gp again do you recommend any?

Sounds like he didn't know what he was talking about and was fobbing you off a bit. I've never used dairy free formula so can't help you with which to choose, sorry

I feel possibly you were fobbed off. Could you try ringing the hospital where baby was born and asked to be referred to the paeds team.

I can't understand why Dr would have said that.
If your baby is passing wind which is smelly and he is straining when pooing or constipated I would say he has cow's milk protein allergy.
Try Nutramigen formula you can buy it I think it is in or around £15 but my dr prescribed it.
