Do ANY celebrities/famous people breastfeed?!

Elf · 17/09/2002 19:51

It seems to me that these svelte celebs have their baby and then their first priority is to get back into their designer gear and get to the next celeb party. I can't believe any of them are up with their babies at night themselves (surely the nanny does that) or do any breastfeeding. They never look done in enough in the photos?

What with all their stylists etc, airbrushing on photos and now babies which they don't even seem to have to look after, how are women supposed to feel supported in being REAL?

Anyone heard of anyone who did/does? For some reason I always imagine that Princess Di and Linda McCartney did but that's just guessing.

Hi again - I think Posh definitely has implants, although I had no idea that she could still bf with implants. Anyway, on a different note entirely, thoughts about "I Don't Know How She Does It"?? It's very popular here in the US. I'm sure it's discussed elsewhere. I enjoyed it very much. Was like Bridget Jones Becomes A Mum.
Back to work. Will hopefully have to time to see you all this evening after baby has gone to sleep. BTW, if someone doesn't mind - could you tell me what the ds, dh, etc. stand for?? Also, is this website primarily for mums that work outside the home??

Lizzer · 12/11/2002 14:27

Hi just wrote massive reply but its disappeared! Basically I said thanks for your comments and I'm starting a new thread on promotion of formula on a new thread - so if you're interested I'll see you there...

Another point i'd like to make after your comments Monkey, is I know a woman not unlike PY, she's depressed and bordering alcoholic and she still b/feeds her 4 yr old daughter. I think that for her she feels that it allows her to nurture her child in a way that her outward behaviour cannot. For the child I would imagine it is a way to get the security they must crave when their mother is being unresponsive to their needs and something which remains as a constant in the child's otherwise ever-changing world. I don't think there would be much milk there to cause damage through drink or drugs but a mother should surely not use b/feeding as the main way to show her child love? That said if they can't physically provide love in a different way due to their illness - should that be taken away from the child??

Oooo, soz am in a bit of a deep old mood this week!!

PS Posh thick or not? I can't decide myself, she's certainly no intellectual but she's as shrewd as you like! What does that make you?

janh · 12/11/2002 14:31

hi, chiarasmum - mumsnet is for mums - any kind! (And even a few dads.)

dh, ds etc stand for dear husband, dear son etc - funny, I thought they were American abbreviations - I was introduced to them by an American, only she suggested the d could also stand for damn!

Rhubarb · 12/11/2002 14:47

In an interview Posh has denied having implants, she says she has just found out how useful "nipple tape" is. As someone who has small breasts myself, I can confirm this!

Oh and I bloody hated breastfeeding! I think the main reason women switch from breast to bottle is because it damn well hurts! The last thing you want after giving birth, as well as dealing with stitches, haemorroids, stretch marks and gut cramp is to have your breasts pulled through a vice every couple of hours! Plus in hospitals, the nice midwife goes and warms the bottle up for you, you don't have to move a muscle, and then if your baby screams all night they will take it away and feed it all night for you so you can have a decent night's rest. No I didn't bottle-feed, I struggled with b/f for 4 months when I finally decided enough was enough and I wanted my life back!

Tinker · 12/11/2002 14:51

Rhubarb - ditto re the breastfeeding! Got sick of being SOAKING WET ALL THE TIME! Switched to bottles at 3 months and I refuse to feel remotely guilty about it. Wanted my body back.

Lizzer · 12/11/2002 15:30

Tinker rhubarb - I know exactly where you are coming from but the fact is they are all classed as 'problems' with b/feeding because there is now an 'easier alternative'. The product sells itself really. However if there were no alternative they wouldn't be 'problems' just how things are. I'm not saying formula feeding isn't a great option in today's world with the sort of ridiculous pressure we are under at this time to look good at all times - especially post-natally, have a contented child 24/7, find time to fit everything in. It's just yet another way we refuse to live in harmony with the rest of the natural world. For that reason alone it makes me feel slightly nervous...

I'm trying to post new thread but it won't go through, I'll keep on trying...

bundle · 12/11/2002 15:34

let's face it, if Posh wasn't famous, she'd be down the pound shop, chasing her kids round the mall and bribing them with Macdonalds - we're all a product of our environment. she's no great intellect from what I've read but I'm sure is a very nice person and does the best she can for her kids

KeepingMum · 12/11/2002 15:48

I'm not sure Posh would be down the pound shop - isn't Daddy a millionaire business man?

bundle · 12/11/2002 15:51

sorry Keepingmum, just my imagination running wild!

KeepingMum · 12/11/2002 16:05

It is a nice idea though, bundle, maybe in a few years when his knees are knackered from playing football and she's not so young and beautiful(?) - but I guess they have some shrewd business plans up their sleeves and will grace the pages of OK for a while. Maybe they will be the next Richard and Judy and have a mid-morning TV show, any other ideas?

bundle · 12/11/2002 16:08

they could flog all the tasteless tat they've acquired over the years on a market stall..or hire themselves out as an alternative pearly king/queen combo

Lizzer · 12/11/2002 16:08

TECH, I can't post a new discussion, have been trying for an hour - just keeps saying technical difficulties. Shall I just try again tomorrow?

(I bet it'll work now just to show me up!!)

Lizzer · 12/11/2002 16:09

...Or get Brooklyn married into royalty - then we'll never be rid of them!!

agaazaa · 12/11/2002 17:42

I feel I have to defend Posh here, there is no way she has implants, her tits are non existant.

She is canny perhaps, ok not intelligent, but she is a canny business woman, just like the rest of us!!

bundle · 12/11/2002 18:00

agaazaa - have you seen her profile lately

agaazaa · 12/11/2002 18:16

u mean thin as a rake?

bundle · 12/11/2002 18:18

with sticky-out bosoms that defy gravity at the top, a bit like the plasticine people me & dd create she didn't have ANY boobs when she was a spice girl, or at least they looked real/normal

agaazaa · 12/11/2002 18:29

oh for crying out loud!! her tits are tiny. Do you mean to say I am the only person to have b/f 2 babies and who has tits that are pert? I am sure there are others, and I have never had breast surgery.

bundle · 12/11/2002 18:33

they might be tiny but relative to her size they certainly don't look it. and the shape's just all wrong - like you see on those ads at the back of the glossies advertising boob jobs. I grew from a B to an F when feeding dd, and they only gradually calmed down, back to more like they used to be. I think it's up to the individual to decide if they want to change their appearance, but don't think what VB has done to herself looks at all nice.

agaazaa · 12/11/2002 18:37

I thought she just got herself a little underwired bra froms Marksys!! Duh, how naive am I ????

This does worry me, can you imagine how crap I will be as a parent when my kids get older and I ask them if they are taking drugs? They will say no - obviously, and until now I would have believed them!!

Thanks bundle you have highlighted my own "greenness" to me!

bundle · 12/11/2002 18:43

agaazaa - oh, sorry, didn't want to come across as a bit of an "I know better than you do"! it's just all those pictures you see of her she's wearing next to nothing, with no visible means of support (and we all know tit-tape can't support anything bigger than AA cups) and they just don't move. like Cilla Black's hair.
I like your (?sp) naievete - much better than my cynicism

Eulalia · 12/11/2002 18:47

Lizzer - I read a book called The Politics of Breastfeeding which discussed many of the points you make. I think the damage done by advertising was greatest in 3rd world countries where education is poor and ironically the need for breastfeeding is very important (also problems making up formula due to inadquate/poor water). I think today usually women bottle feed as an informed choice. Having said that one would expect b/feeding rates to be higher. There seems to be plenty of supression of advertising of baby milk (none on TV and no actual bottles shown in magazines) and often in small letters words such as "breastfeeding your baby is best". I feel the lack of breastfeeding is not due to advertising as such (in this country anyway) but is a cultural thing, lack of promoting breastfeeding properly, lack of support etc... I have talked about this before. Hope you get your thread started!

bundle · 12/11/2002 18:53

Eulalia, I agree it's a cultural thing. I met a number of Irish midwives during my last pregnancy and they were appalled at the lack of breastfeeding in Ireland, where you'd maybe think in a more rural economy people might see more 'natural' stuff going on. I breastfed my dd till she was nearly 2, and it's a great joy to me that when she's playing with her baby doll that she lifts up her jumper, holds it to her bellybutton (ok, maybe she's not got latching on sussed ) and says "milk" (as well as holding beakers to its mouth too (an advocate of mixed feeding maybe). Although I've been contributing more to the Posh spice's tits part of this thread, I do feel passionately about bfeeding and the power which eg soap operas and celebs have in influencing women over their choices for their own babies. good luck with your thread, Lizzer

Rhubarb · 12/11/2002 20:27

I still say Posh hasn't had implants. The reason they look so big and lopsided when she goes out, is that she uses 'tit tape' to push them up. On skinny people like me this does look ridiculous, your nips are more or less pointing sky-high! Also she has just had her 2nd so her boobs are bound to be quite a bit bigger for a while. Perhaps she is alternating between b/f and bottle?

aloha · 12/11/2002 21:40

Nah, I've seen 'em in the flesh (not much flesh, actually) and they are definitely silicone. It's not illegal or immoral, but they do look a bit funny to me.
