I got this e-mail today and thought that some of you may be interested in supporting these campaigns

Dear Friend,

We have a short, but important window of opportunity to influence policy and implement two of the Breastfeeding Manifesto?s objectives. As a supporter of The Breastfeeding Manifesto I am writing to ask for your urgent help to influence two important proposed laws which could see the implementation of objective 5 and 7 of the Manifesto- if you act now. Visit www.breastfeedingmanifesto.org.uk and send the emails to the government ministers on the ?How You Can Help? page. It?s quick and easy!

Objective 5-Breastfeeding in public

Objective 5 of the Manifesto is: ?Develop policy and practice to support breastfeeding in public places.? The UK government has released The Single Equality Bill for consultation. This means that everyone including organizations and members of the public can submit their comments on this proposed new law. The Single Equality Bill covers a range of issues but one of its aims is to stop the discrimination against breastfeeding mothers in public. We are delighted that the government is finally addressing this issue. However, we feel that the bill as it currently stand is worrying; it only provides protection for those mothers who are breastfeeding a child up to the age of 12 months. By only protecting Mothers breastfeeding children under the age of 12 months the UK government is sending out a message that it is unacceptable to breastfeed a child over the age of one and therefore suggesting it is acceptable to discriminate against them. The World Health Organization recommends that babies are breastfed for two years or beyond and so we believe that the cap on 12 months could be damaging to children?s health. We need you to send the email at the bottom of this pagewww.breastfeedingmanifesto.org.uk/make_your_voice_heard_1.php to ask the government to change the proposed law to ensure all women are fully protected to feed their babies in public beyond their first birthday.

Objective 7- Advertising of Formula Milk

Objective 7 of the Manifesto is: ?Adopt the World Health Organization International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes and subsequent relevant Resolutions.? The Food Standards Agency is currently consulting regulations for the advertising and promotion of formula milk. You may have read the recent press coverage and out cry surrounding OK, the model Jordan and SMA formula milk. It is this kind of promotion which we want to stop. However the proposed regulations would not cover this kind of promotion and so the regulations are inadequate for protecting parents and babies from the influence of formula-milk promotion. Parents need reliable information based on evidence, not commercial pressure from baby milk companies. Non commerical, independent information will benefit all parents including those who bottle feed. However, the proposed regulations are inadequate for the job of protecting parents and babies from the influence of formula promotion. Objective 7 of the Manifesto calls for the implementation of The WHO Code on the Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes and it provides an excellent model for the law that is required. We need you to send the email at www.breastfeedingmanifesto.org.uk/make_your_voice_heard_2.php asking the Foood Standards Agenncy to go further than they propose to go.

It is only with your help and when we work together that we will be be able to influence the government and have lasting affect on children?s health.

I urge you to please visit this website and send the emails, your voice really matters.

Best Wishes

Alison Baum

Desi - if that was all you had said, you may well not have to feel the need to defend yourself.

The name isnt fluffy, its true. But, its not a fluffy issue. It's time folk took it seriously.

I, for one, am Sick To Death of folk wandering on threads, proclaiming how dull it is, how over the top the breasfeeding lobbyists are, over and over and over again, and generally being rude, unsupportive, and troublemaking for absolutely no good reason. THAT is dull.

I'm fed up of Scottish Mummy's provocative name-calling without any basis.

I'm just fed up. Breastfeeding IS GOOD FOR BABIES AND CHILDREN, and all the way through to adults. FUCKING HELL, no-one goes on threads about eating 5 a day and belittling it.

I am thoroughly, completely and wholly pissed off with the whole thing.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/09/2007 22:51

I think I'll spend my energies on Hunker's site in future.

It's fucking wasted on here.

Pannacotta · 05/09/2007 22:54

What is Hunker's site VVVQV?
Do agree with you, it is really dull all this anti breastfeedfing feeling, perhaps better to ignore posts from people like this rather than getting upset and drawn in?

I wondered how long it would be before someone came on with the "breastfeeding is dirty" connotations line.

Pannacotta, CAT me.

I cant post a link right now.

PinataPaddy · 05/09/2007 22:59

"Who suggested BF was dirty Bella, I can't see that in any of the recent posts?"

"I'm seeing hesian, lentils, skanky hair, dirty toenails sticking out of braided yak fur sandals."

LittleBella · 05/09/2007 22:59

"skanky hair" "toenails sticking out"

That implies breastfeeding as dirty.

I was going to do a sarky post on that subject eons back, but knew if I just waited long enough...

Desiderata · 05/09/2007 23:01

VVVQV ... we find ourselves here again.

I don't have any truck with ScottishMummy, I thought her posts offensive.

It's always difficult to put these posts into context, but I really don't have a problem with bf. I have a problem with the language and the evangelism. You, Harpsi et al, make your point far more graciously than most.

Yes,I do have a problem with openly bf toddlers. I think it's my problem, tbh, and I admire you for continuing. I like to think that we remain friends, and that you can differentiate between me spouting off to people I have history with, and those I don't.

Doodle, anything to do with breastfeeding gives out those images to many people in this country.

That's why it's got to be changed. Those people are not going to be persuaded by a change of name.

PinataPaddy · 05/09/2007 23:05

thunk

LittleBella · 05/09/2007 23:06

Doodle you are being disingenuous if you are arguing that the name is separate from the image of breastfeeding.

You could call it NorkPeace and masses of people would still have the skanky hair toenails image.

It is breastfeeding itself that has that image with so many people.

Well, yes, if I'm honest, it really is your problem. If you see something wrong, feel weird/strange about seeing a parent doing the most natural thing in the world, then yes, I'd say you have a problem (I mean that in the nicest possible way).

The thing is, when you type it out in black and white, it comes across as an insult. In the same way that although sometimes, I can tell the difference between you spouting off with folk you have history with, if its written down in black and white on screen for all to read, then it comes across in the wrong way.

The more b/feeding is hidden away, discouraged from continuing until it naturally halts, the more it is de-normalised in society. The more of these fucking baby Annabels etc that have their lovely bottles, that are spoon fed green gunk so they can poo....the more young girls are given the wrong impression about looking after a baby from such a young age.

This, to me, is so wrong.

THere are many people on here who believe strongly in something.

I wouldnt dream of calling someone who believed in a God deluded, evangelical or anything else if they post their thoughts on the subject (I'm an atheist, obv). It would be downright rude and disrespectful.

Pannacotta · 05/09/2007 23:13

But why should breastfeeding per se have to be promoted? What a sorry state of affairs where we need to promote feeding an infant breastmilk, which is what we are designed to do. it seems in this culture we have forgotten what our breasts are for! Madness.

Pannacotta · 05/09/2007 23:14

VVVQV dont have CAT sorry. Any other way of getting the link?

binkleandflip · 05/09/2007 23:15

Some people love breastfeeding and love to look upon a breastfeeding mother and child

Some dont like it all - thats human nature - you cant force them to like it. You can change the law but you cant change peoples personal feelings about an what is an intimate act between a mother and child and I think a lot of post are implying that the law should be passed so it could somehow make people embrace it on perhaps the same emotional level as the mother doing the feeding.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 05/09/2007 23:15

What VVVQV said

times 2

NormaStanleyFletcher · 05/09/2007 23:15

PS - QV - have emailed you

Desiderata · 05/09/2007 23:17

If that was aimed at me, VVVQV, then I deserve it!

We're cool. I will get there, in the end. Trust me.

But I must go to my bed now!

NormaStanleyFletcher · 05/09/2007 23:17

but binkleandflip have you ever heard of a mother being asked to move on because she is giving her babe a bottle??

PinataPaddy · 05/09/2007 23:18

it is also a sorry state of affairs when breastfeeding needs a LAW to protect mothers and babies from harrassment.

it reminds me of Mali which has had legally ban slavery 4 times in the last 60 yrs.
