Microwaving formula - why not?

I know all the literature says never microwave milk feeds due to hot spots and therefore risk of scalding the baby, but surely if you shake it up well this can't happen.
Any views?

Everyone does it, don't they?

suzywong · 29/09/2004 11:24

shake it before you give it to them and then let it stand for 10 seconds and you'd have to be pretty unfortunate to get it wrong

Kayleigh · 29/09/2004 11:25

I microwaved both my boys feeds. I started with ds1 when he was about 3 months old when a friend (who had an older child) saw me heating the bottle with boiling water in a bowl and laughed at me. With ds2 i did it from day 1.
As long as you don't put the teat in the microwave and shake really well it'll be absolutely fine.

Bagpuss30 · 29/09/2004 11:25

Not sure. I used to keep the water and formula seperate and just heat up the bottle of water and then tip the formula in and shake well and never had a problem. I'm sure the parenting police will be along to tell me off in a moment .

NomDePlume · 29/09/2004 11:26

I didn't do it when DD was tiny (paranoid Mummy alert), but I started when she was around 8mo. So long as you don't nuke it to within an inch of it's life and give it a good shake along with testing the temp yourself then you should be fine.

carla · 29/09/2004 11:26

I microwaved both dds formula .... and I put the teat it

blossomhill · 29/09/2004 11:26

I always did - it was a god send in the middle of the night. Just make sure you shake it really well to prevent hot spots!

sponge · 29/09/2004 11:27

I certainly do. Beats having a screaming baby while you try to warm it up while it floats in a bowl of hot water. Just wondered if I was putting my dear newborn at terrible risk or if the instructions are for those too dim to realise shaking it up would be a good move.

I did it.

CountessDracula · 29/09/2004 11:29

I started doing it in bowl but got laughted at by so many people that I moved to the microwave. No hot spots ever.

Followed all the advice with ds1. Didn't have the time with ds2, so ignored large amounts of advice and did things my own way, so did microwave milk feeds.

The important bit is to get the right number of seconds for the volume of feed, and yes, shake it THOROUGHLY and test on back of hand.

Be careful if you use a microwave at someone elses house as you may need to heat it for different amount of time in a different microwave.

Don't see any problem with it as long as you are careful.

codswallop · 29/09/2004 11:30

I have never had hot spots int he coffe i microwave
t hik it all crap ther wa a thra ont his hold on

eleanorsmum · 29/09/2004 11:30

if you dont want to microwave try this - make up (say for a 4oz feed) 2oz of water with four scoops of formula, than when bubba is hungry boil kettle and add 2oz more water, shake and serve - instant, just the right temp and easy to do when out and about witha thermos of hot wtaer.

dejags · 29/09/2004 12:03

bad mummy alert

we give ds2 room temparature bottles - saves any hassles heating bottles and easy peasy when out and about

codswallop · 29/09/2004 12:07

yes me too

bundle · 29/09/2004 12:08

never, ever heated milk...down that road madness lies...dds have it as it comes or not, if they choose

Skate · 29/09/2004 12:11

Always microwave - like everyone says, just shake well and anyway it's not like you are heating it up much - only to room temp.

And good advice about other people's microwaves - they can be vastly different and it's a nightmare if you make it too hot and have to try and cool it down while baby screams!

PennyMojo · 29/09/2004 12:15

I always did .. and everyone I know always did .. just shake it really well first

TBH I used to do all the bottles in the morning fill with boiling water, measure out formula into one of those containers from mothercare (divided into 3) then whenever a feed was needed just mix together and serve at room temp ... no need for microwave

once DS went on to cow's milk he also used to drink it straight from the fridge

lou33 · 29/09/2004 15:26

Mine also like it straight from the fridge. I only warmed it when they were v small.

JoolsToo · 29/09/2004 17:46

yeah! think yourself lucky - we didn't have microwaves in my day!

Skate · 29/09/2004 17:53

Did you even have to rub sticks together to get fire?! Ha ha!

Egypt · 29/09/2004 19:12

i'm sure they just write it to cover themselves as there is always the odd stupid person who won't think to shake the bottle after it's been microwaved........like my dh.

sponge · 29/09/2004 19:54

Oh he gets room temperature feeds too but he does prefer it warm so if I'm at home and up then I blast it in the micro.

The only thing that has not been mentioned so far is that heating in the microwave also destroys nutrients in the milk. That is one of the reasons it is not recommended as well as risk of burns. Breastmilk shouldn't be heated in microwave either. Milk doesn't need to be warm anyway.
