Microwaving formula - why not?

I know all the literature says never microwave milk feeds due to hot spots and therefore risk of scalding the baby, but surely if you shake it up well this can't happen.
Any views?

oh god mears, does that mean that everything i heat up from the freezer (batch wise) is destroyed of nutrients? that means most of ds's food! and i thought i was good making him homemade stuff...

Breastmilk will stay good for several days in the fridge as well as up to 8 hours at room temperature so we didn't use frozen on a regular basis. I had read the same as Mears, that Microwaving could break down nutrients as well as create hot spots so when we thawed BM we would put the bag in a glass jar and then put that in a pot of water. It only takes a few minutes to thaw.
For nighttime feeds of EBM I just left a bottle out for him. You can chill it first if you know it will be several hours and then it's generally at perfect room temp. when you need it.

blinkin 'eck. i wish they would say WHY you shouldnt heat in the microwave on the milk packets, and in al the bf material. i have never read it. that's bad.

My step-brother blew the microwave door off after putting a bottle in with the lid on and air inside the bottle.

Found this on the web. It doesn't go into detail though:

Defrosting Frozen Breast Milk
Place milk in refrigerator the night before you're going to use it. Refrigerator defrosting takes 12 hours.

Or, place the milk under warm running water or in a pan of warm water. Don't use hot water, as this can destroy some of the milk's immunological components.

CAUTION: Never microwave breast milk! Microwaving breast milk can change the milk's composition, and has the potential to burn your baby.

Fat in breast milk will separate and rise to the top. By gently swirling the container, you can mix any fat that may have separated.

Never refreeze thawed breast milk.

Remember that the color, consistency and odor of your breast milk may vary depending on your diet.

Discard any breast milk you don't use during a feeding.

Yes but Mears that's breast milk which I wouldn't microwave.
Several sources specifically say that microwaving does NOT alter the composition of formula, merely heats it unevenly, which you can sort out with a good shake.
I know it doesn't need to be warm but ds does prefer it that way.

Something else I've done wrong.

mears · 03/10/2004 21:28

Nope Sponge - that goes for formula milk too. Can destroy vitamin content (same for food too)

Bugger, what a pain.
