16 week old baby I'm at the end of my tether been to doctors roughly 10 times, hospital, health visitor. Fed up. Shes been on gaviscon, ranitidine max dose, omeprazole. Nothing is working I'm sick and tired of having a screaming baby all day who is clearly in agony and nobody listening to me. I'm about to go private and pay £250 just so somebody will listen. I feel like a shit parent and it is ruining mine and my daughters life. How on earth did people get past this?? Any miracle cures? And I dont want sit baby upright, smaller feeds.. I've tried literally all of that nonsense. Please somebody tell me it gets better. Her poor throat must be burnt out. Its turned into silent reflux too so much worse

could she have a dairy allergy that is causing the reflux? as even with all the best medication it wont improve unless that's sorted.

guiltynetter · 09/09/2019 03:56

my DS has horrendous reflux. he is 11 months old and it's been under control since he was 6 months with omeprazole but recently its been creeping back. he is 11 months old and currently screaming his head off. it's the hardest thing in the world

guiltynetter · 09/09/2019 03:58

omeprazole was a wonder drug for us so it's such a shame it didn't work for you.

rottiemum88 · 09/09/2019 04:06

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but was either the ranitidine or omeprazole prescribed alongside domperidone? We were told by our HV that the ranitidine/omeprazole alone would only really deal with neutralising the stomach acid, but you also need an anti-emitic to stop the sickness. The GP never told us this and didn't suggest prescribing it until I mentioned the HV's advice, at which point they did without question.

Enidthecat · 09/09/2019 04:09

I'm really sorry, that's so hard. Has anyone talked to you about the possibility of dairy allergy?

SofiaAmes · 09/09/2019 04:23

When dd was 5 months old I "went private" (took dd to a pediatrician in the USA on a visit there) and got a solution for her reflux. The pediatrician prescribed Enfamil AR which is a special stay down formula thickened with Rice Starch. DD was exclusively bf up until that point so we added one bottle a day (if I remember correctly, at night) of the Enfamil AR in addition to the breast milk. It was truly night and day in terms of results. Once she was mostly on solids the reflux completely went away, but the Enfamil AR bottle a day was a great way to be able to continue bfing.

We also found that dd was much more comfortable on her tummy, so put her to sleep on her tummy (only way she would get to sleep) and we would carry her in what some describe as Tiger pose (palming her tummy with her face pointed towards the floor.

SofiaAmes · 09/09/2019 04:24

PS. None of the other standard cures (that you have described trying) worked for dd.

Namaste6 · 09/09/2019 05:00

My DN suffered this way too. If I remember correctly my sister had to swap from regular formula to a Soy based one. It sorted her out.

NeverSayFreelance · 09/09/2019 05:12

Sounds like lactose intolerance or dairy allergy.

SofiaAmes · 09/09/2019 05:28

PPS. We had also tried eliminating lactose from my diet in case somehow it was passing through to the breast milk (as dd was ebf). It didn't work.

ArnoldBee · 09/09/2019 05:32

We were told by our HV to start giving good at 17 weeks which settled things down. It's tough but it does get better.

Elmo311 · 09/09/2019 05:52

My daughter is 5 months old and was vomiting after most feeds, not gaining much weight , crying in pain after feeds. I went back to the Dr so many times and they said she was fine, but that they'd refer me to a paediatrician. Got the letter through (in June) for a paediatrician appointment in September!!! I said fuck that, took her to see a private one.
Long, long, long story short she's been diagnosed with cows milk protein allergy, we had to trial a couple of other milks first but now she's been on Alfamino SMA since Wednesday, and Omeprazole and oh my god she's a different baby! No vomiting, no pain.

Might be worth looking into?

TantrumToddler · 09/09/2019 05:59

We tried everything prescribed, nothing worked. Eventually we found she could tolerate goats milk formula, you used to be able to get it from Boots.

Number3or4 · 09/09/2019 06:13

Omeprazole was ds3 miracle drug, but how is your dd poo? Is she constipated? That can cause its own problems. Or have you noticed anyother side effect causes by any of the medicen? Gaviscon caused big constipation problem (even with lactulose and suposotary) and ranitidine gave ds3 diarrhoea. I told his doctor the only way ds3 sleep is on his tummy, I know I'm not supposed to but I do it as lack of sleep is making me feel crazy won't it have similar effects on him? Dr said it also reduces the chance of him breathing in his vomit. Yes, it increases chances of sids but it is about taking calculated risks. I was also told to consider weaning earlier, I think ds3 was 17 weeks then. Discus these things with a healthcare professionals before implementing them.

NeverSayFreelance · 09/09/2019 07:43

@SofiaAmes Breast milk contains lactose regardless of whether it's in your diet or not

guiltynetter · 09/09/2019 07:55

I forgot to mention this morning the only thing that eventually controlled DS reflux was SMA Alfamino, thickened with Carobel, and omeprazole.

SofiaAmes · 09/09/2019 12:26

Yes, but allergy/intolerance to breast milk proteins is extremely rare.

NotSoThinLizzy · 09/09/2019 12:49

My DD had really horrible reflux to the point she lost so much weight. Turned out she had a floppy larynx might be worth a look.

Tatogratin · 09/09/2019 12:55

Reflux is usually a symptom of something ubderlying. I cut out all cow's milk products, lactose free isn't enough, it has to be all dairy, and soya too.

xJune88 · 09/09/2019 13:38

Thankyou all so much. Shes formula fed on aptamil 1. Nobody has mentioned allergies or intolerances will see how long this referral takes and if it's over a week/2 which I'm sure it will be around 8 I'll defo be going private. Sick of been afraid to leave the house and its ruining all of our lives. Will defo be asking about formulas, can I get them off the shelf or is it prescribed only? Sick of going to the doctors to be told it's just one of those things its infuriating!

OP posts:
guiltynetter · 09/09/2019 13:47

you can only have the formulas prescribed.

N0tfinished · 09/09/2019 13:54

My niece was similar, goats milk formula sorted her out too. She had Cranio Sacral Therapy too, which my sister said helped. The therapist was a former midwife who noticed my DN's suck was very poor. She just bit down on the teat rather than sucked. A traditional avent teat was better for her than the newer ones that mimic a nipple IYKWIM.

TheVoiceInTheShed · 09/09/2019 15:23

Worth considering Cows milk protein allergy - so much more common than you would think
You will have to push for a prescription for the non allergy milk as they don't like to give it out as expensive.

SofiaAmes · 09/09/2019 15:37

Enfamil AR is available over the counter. www.amazon.co.uk/Enfamil-AR-Powder-Formula/dp/B00JQZQBA8

SofiaAmes · 09/09/2019 15:39

Goats milk is almost the same protein as cows milk. Doesn't make sense to be allergic to one but not the other.
