Reflux ranitidine helppp!!

My 4 month old baby is getting worse. Since 7 weeks old she has fussed with her bottles not all but a lot of them she used to back arch/arms and legs everywhere when feeding her. She ended up on ranitidine and Carobel which once we got the right dose of ranitidine she drained all her bottles no problems nice and relaxed for 3 and a half weeks and now we are back to square one however it’s a complete fight. She’s on the right dose of ranitidine for her weight, she drinks about 2oz and pushing it out with her tongue or just shouting. She was on aptamil, we then tried Nutramigen which she point blank refused to drink so back to aptamil at my wits end I’ve tried Hipp Organic today but she’s not drinking it any better . Going to try early weaning but this still won’t solve her only drinking 2oz because she won’t eat that much for a few months will she . It’s getting me down so much and I dread feeding time . Sorry for the rant

It sounds like she might have a dairy allergy. Can you request neocate from your gp? Or try the nutrimgen again but wean her onto the taste by mixing it with the aptamil to begin with, gradually reducing the amount of aptamil each bottle.

I also suggest asking for omeprazole from the gp. At one stage my daughter had omeprazole twice a day and then ranitidine 20 mins before a feed three times a day. She had very severe reflux and dairy intolerance, and it took a while to get the balance right, but we got there in the end, and you will too. I know how awful it is watching them scream and writhe around all night. So don't be afraid to keep pushing the doctor. In the end I paid to see a private paediatric doctor to get it resolved, but a good gp should refer you to one if it's not getting better.

jollyohh · 29/05/2019 21:22

Is she under the peads?

My DS was on massive doses of Ranitadne (1ml 4 times a day) from 5 weeks. He had severe reflux until he was 2 years and we got on top of his allergies. I would push for an increase or change in medication and try a hydrolysed formula or neonate.

Impossibletofindausername · 29/05/2019 22:01

Thank you for your replies. Do you think the allergy? I’ve been unconvinced it’s that so that’s how I tried last time with Nutramigen slowly introducing it and she wouldn’t have it.
So we are under peads and she’s on 1.3mls three times a day I was debating on asking for omeprazole.
See now she’s on ranitidine she doesn’t seem in pain she is just refusing/fussing with the milk . They suggested aptamil pepti which is another hydrolysed milk but think meant to taste bit more like normal milk butt when I rang yesterday the Pead told me to ride it out till this feeding nurse appointment end of June and see her opinion. Over an hour it’s just took to get some milk in tonight I could cry

If feeding is that difficult, you need to call and explain she's just not feeding. Monitor wees and poo,and weight gain.

I would push for the Aptamil pepti which is the first line alternative for milk allergies.

How much milk is she taking in 24 hours?

EAIOU · 29/05/2019 23:13

Absolutely get baby seen again
Sometimes you need to push and push

Ours has a suspected cow's milk protein intolerance and it took about 6weeks for everything to calm down after nutramigen.

We done 5scoops usual formula with 1scoop nutramigen and once we got to 3scoops each, she then decided she wouldn't drink it. So at a dream feed that evening, took a full 6oz of nutramigen and has taken it since.

Just keep pushing with gp etc. I've been there and it's so worrying!

itshappened · 30/05/2019 06:09

When I stopped breast feeding and moved my daughter onto neocate, it really did make such a difference. Sometimes it is worth really emphasising the point they are not taking any milk, to really get the doctors to listen and respond. Also at 2 we are currently weaning my daughter off omeprazole, whereas we stopped the ranitidine after 6 months. So it's definitely worth trying in my opinion as for us it was very effective.

Impossibletofindausername · 30/05/2019 09:04

Thank you for all your replies, so I’m going to ring today and ask for omeprazole I can’t go on like this.
Would she have drank normal aptamil perfect for 3 and a half weeks if it was an allergy though? I guess if omeprazole doesn’t work my next step is aptamil pepti. She doesn’t dream feed which is also my other nightmare.
So she’s being force fed about 24oz at the min. I can’t deal with leaving her only having 2oz on one bottle to see how she goes.
How long does omeprazole take to work?
Your meant to enjoy feeding your baby and I hate it she’s such a good baby otherwise

Anyone else experienced ranitidine stop working for there little one

OP posts:
itshappened · 31/05/2019 09:09

Basically I think omeprazole is designed to stop acid reflux and ranitidine will then theoretically tackle any acid that gets through despite it. Therefore I found ranitidine only helped in conjunction with the omeprazole and we had to increase the dose a few times. But after a couple of months we dropped to just omeprazole. Currently weaning my 2 year old off it. They say it takes 2 weeks to fully have an effect but we saw a change almost immediately.

In regards to a dairy intolerance, they really do come on slowly. I think it's only when it's really causing discomfort that babies really start showing signs. I tried continuing with breast feeding, then going dairy free, gluten free, caffeine free etc... but it was only when we moved her onto neocate formula that she stated feeding properly and stopped crying all the time. I had to go cold turkey on the boob, as my baby wouldn't accept a bottle to begin with. But with persistence she eventually accepted the strange formula and a bottle. Only took a day. I would advise you to try again with a dairy free formula. For some reason reflux and dairy intolerances go hand in hand.

Impossibletofindausername · 31/05/2019 09:57

At my wits end today haven’t stopped crying. Got 3oz in this morning and that was her screaming and turning her head right back. I really feel she needs some other reflux medications when I ask the pead on Tuesday she said ranitidine was enough it certainly isn’t for how the last two days have gone it’s awful. She’s not even uncomfortable after the bottle it’s just the drinking of it , her voice sounds horse as well I don’t know what to do

OP posts:
itshappened · 31/05/2019 10:15

I would call the gp and say she has not had any milk for 24 hrs and won't stop crying. I no it's not ideal but a bit of embellishment will force them to listen. Or if you can afford it you could ring up for an emergency private paediatric appointment which is what I did, and again really emphasise how bad it is to get them to give her omeprazole. Worst case scenario take her to a&e. Be forceful and persistent. Don't leave without having a prescription for a new formula and omeprazole.

I'm sorry you are going through this. I have been where you are and it's soooo tough.

Impossibletofindausername · 31/05/2019 10:29

Feel like my GP’s useless wouldn’t even prescribe me ranitidine had to wait for a hospital referral if you go private do you get a same day appointment? So once your little one was on omeprazole you seen a difference quite quick? Was yours refusing to drink?
It’s horrendous isn’t it sorry that you have been through it too

OP posts:
itshappened · 31/05/2019 10:52

Where are you? I'm in London so was able to ring around different private hospitals until I found a same day appointment. My gp told me it was colic and asked if I wanted to think about anti depressants if I'm struggling... so I went private and they were amazing. My daughter wouldn't sleep, would feed constantly but could only feed for a couple of minutes before screaming again. She was hungry and wanted the comfort of breast feeding, but then the milk made things worse and I think her throat was so sore from the acid reflux and constant crying. It was so awful to watch and I felt so helpless.
But it really did improve quickly. I did have to go back a couple of times to increase the prescription, but the medication and neocate combination did eventually resolve it. I suffered for 5 months though before getting help, so I recommend taking action as quickly as possible!

Impossibletofindausername · 31/05/2019 11:14

No I’m liverpool. Thank you for your replies. I feel for you having 5 months of it this has been 11 weeks now but we have had a good 3 week spell in between however since Sunday it’s been horrendous she just won’t feed and is screaming after a few ducks of the bottle then just pushing it out with her tongue. I’m probably going to have to go to a and e today might ring 111 I just want someone to prescribe me something else to be trying I get it’s probably not a quick fix but need to be trying something it’s so tight on her and I can’t deal with it no more feel so helpless

Hiya OP! Just came back to check and see how you and your little one got on. It is an absolute nightmare! I've been there but I kept taking mine back and telling them.

Get your HV to contact them if they won't listen to you. I phoned mines nearly crying (takes a lot to upset me) and they offered to sort it out but I eventually got sorted with a nice doctor.

@itshappened. I feel the doctors were thinking about offering me them too! But I just carried on until I got her sorted. Didn't take as long as you though.

The nutramigen really did help mine but it did take about 6weeks to take full bottles with no issues and the crying was on both our parts but she feeds well and regular and has started on some solids at 5.5months.

I'm sorry you're having this trouble still OP and that you're not being listened to. Maybe just let her feed little and often as she is doing until you get seen. Keep a diary of all her feeds/ounces. Keep phoning your HV too.

What time does she usually sleep at?

Impossibletofindausername · 02/06/2019 09:57

Hey
So I managed to get omeprazole on Friday she wasn’t too impressed with it yesterday we have the mups tablets is that what yous all got? Just praying this works and if not she’s said try aptamil pepti wants me to try one thing at a time.
That’s one thing she’s always been a really good sleeper and still is she fidgets of a night but not awake just all over the cot . She is usually in bed by 9 depending on her last feed and keeping her up right for a bit after sometimes a bit earlier.
Ive started trying her with some food she’s 4.5months butt just having to do it earlier . It’s honestly felt like it’s been going on for ages and because I had a really good 3.5 weeks with her feeding well and now back to square one so quick 🤦🏼‍♀️

OP posts:
itshappened · 02/06/2019 10:14

If she is already having some food, then my advise would be to dissolve the tablet in a small amount of boiling water and mixing with pear purée. Pear purée is very easy on their digestive system and they usually like the flavour. You'll only need a couple of spoonfuls. What is her prescription? We would cut the tablet in half and give it to her a couple of times a day, 30 mins before a bottle.

Impossibletofindausername · 02/06/2019 10:39

So she’s only just started and is having literally spoon fulls but if she doesn’t get used to it I’ll try that thank you. So she’s only on 5mg once a day which is half a tablet and on 1.3mls ranitidine 3 times a day

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 02/06/2019 10:42

Have you tried the reflux milk? We switched to it and ds was a different baby from the first bottle

Impossibletofindausername · 02/06/2019 11:54

As in like aptamil anti reflux? So we have used Carobel and that is basically what’s in that sorta milk just makes it thicker that worked for a short time and then if it was made too thick she struggled to drink it and any less it made no difference in the end

OP posts:
EAIOU · 02/06/2019 13:06

Did you ask for the dissolvable Omeprazole? That's what we were given

Impossibletofindausername · 02/06/2019 13:29

They said it’s a special request and we have to try tablets first . Just feel like all the bits get stuck in the syringe with the dissolved tablet

OP posts:
itshappened · 02/06/2019 14:18

Honestly please try it dissolved in a spoonful of purée, it make it so much easier to make sure they have swallowed it. The syringes are a nightmare!

Impossibletofindausername · 02/06/2019 17:09

I will try that. So did you dissolve it in some water then put the water on the spoon with purée? I’ve just been getting any bits left in the syringe and putting them in her mouth. So far we have no improvement

Absoluteunit · 02/06/2019 17:13

It sounds like it's the dairy so the meds will only help to a point. My DD was on ranitidine, then imerperezole but once she was on neocate milk it all miraculously cleared up!

Nutraimigen and neocate smell and taste absolutely yuk so it's no surprise your LO is rejecting. If you can try to wean an oz at a time that might help. Our peads even suggested putting a drop or two of vanilla in to help and that worked!

Good luck x
