This week 2-8 July is International Nestlé-Free Week!

Nestlé is the target of an international boycott because it contributes to the unnecessary death and suffering of infants around the world by aggressively marketing baby foods in breach of international marketing standards.

This week 2-8 July is International Nestlé-Free Week!

If you are new to the boycott or can't commit to giving up Nestlé products long term, then at least give them a miss this week.

If you doubt that Nestlé is doing anything wrong, see the recent independent investigations conducted by the Guardian www.guardian.co.uk/medicine/s...079757,00.html and UNICEF Philippines.

I telephoned the careline and told the very pleasant sounding lady (no waiting in a queue or talking to computers) that I was supporting the boycott against their company and was phoning to register my support during International Boycott Nestle Week. She took my postcode and asked which sector she should pass my comments to. I replied that I was refraining from buying all their products. She said she'd pass my comments on, but she was clearly ready to end the call there, so I elaborated on why I don't buy Nestle products: because I object to the corporation's refusal to abide by the requirements adopted by the World Health Assembly when marketing baby foods. She then asked whether I was acting on behalf of an organisation. I told her that I was acting upon my own personal convictions and she replied that she was asking because sometimes people phone on behalf of "a certain activist support group".

Thanks for reminding me on about this bionicley.

I can't get your Guardian link to work though, could you try again please?

We live on the borders of two areas so I've copied your post to both Noticeboards of Netmums and both NCT egroups. Hope you don't mind.

Netmums have recently accepted advertising from Nestle which I think is outrageous, for many reasons including their high profile healthy eating campaign! So I've posted on their Noticeboards to p* them off more than anything.

If you want to have a look at which brands Nestle sell so that you can boycot them, have a look here:

moondog · 02/07/2007 20:23

Every week is Nestle free week chez Moondog.

eca · 02/07/2007 21:59

I HATE NESTLE!! And never to buy their products

bionicley · 02/07/2007 23:29

mum2george, I have been heavily censored in the netmums coffee house discussion about Nescafe. I don't know if you followed the discussion there? Today I dared to post a separate thread about the boycott and received points and a severe reprimand from a mod! There is little real discussion there - and lots of very defensive comments.
The guardian link is

TooTicky · 02/07/2007 23:51

I haven't seen any publicity about this. We NEVER buy nestle though.

moondog · 03/07/2007 08:24

Eh??
Why a reprimand?
How bizarre,is free speech not allowed there?
Can you do us a link then?

bionicley · 03/07/2007 08:44

www.netmums.com/coffeehouse/showthread.php?t=60541
Putting a separate thread appears to be against the rules on netmums and I was sent a pm saying so.
I posted lots of links that were removed as 'not relevant' although they were IMHO.
I really don't know why I continue to go there - probably just don't want them to think that they are off the hook with their Nestle sponsorship.

OP posts:
moondog · 03/07/2007 08:49

How not relevant?
I would have taken this up with 'em.

mum2george · 03/07/2007 08:55

Good for you for starting the thread on the coffee house. I've just been posting on the local noticeboards.

It is interesting that they are telling you off though. I'm sure that Nestle doesn't want to be seen as to interfer with the site content, but they are obviously finding ways around it like they do with the code on promoting baby milk

theUrbanDryad · 03/07/2007 10:40

bionicley - have posted on that Netmums thread. can't believe they removed the links. what would expect from a site who gets sponsorship money from Nestle though? we should boycott them too, except they're mostly so far up their own "hun" they wouldn't notice!

moondog · 03/07/2007 11:39

So, lets get this straight-Nescafe sponsor Netmums and are a subsidiary of Nestle?

If so,am staggered that John Bird and Anita Roddick are patrons.

theUrbanDryad · 03/07/2007 12:10

moondog - Nestle have their finger in the Body Shop pie too, and Anita Roddick is no saint believe me.

think i've managed to irritate the moderator on Netmums anyway. i fear my time there is limited...

mush4brains · 03/07/2007 12:23

Some of the local noticeboards had links to the local NCT branches who are getting them removed as the NCT are part of the NEstle boycott- they are causing untold work for some people by accepting sponshorship from Nestle- the part that made me most angry is the Nescafe sign first appeared at the start of breastfeeding awareness week
All the antenatal/postnatal & bfc that I know have dumped their netmums fliers they where giving out as a result of this.

bionicley · 03/07/2007 15:03

How can netmums not allow 'debating'?!
Have just asked again why my links weren't relevant to the thread but know I should just walk away!

OP posts:
mum2george · 03/07/2007 15:12

Moondog, Netmums aren't sponsored by Nestle but have accepted sponsorship from them.

Apparently, Saatchi & Saatchi have advised them to advertise on sites and publications aimed specifically at parents in a cynical attempt to "put good will in the bank for times of trouble", ie when people get to hear of the boycott.

Anita Roddick sold The Body Shop recently to Nestle so they have been added to the boycott list, seems that everyone has a price

Mush4brains, I used to give out flyers for netmums, including at our local ante-natal clinic (5,000+ births per year). I've put them all in the recycling and have emailed Netmums to tell them why. Haven't received a reply though, but what was I expecting?

If you want to email Netmums to tell them why you are unhappy about them accepting advertising from Nestle or that you will no longer be giving out flyers for them for free the address is

[email protected]

mush4brains · 03/07/2007 16:31

mum2george- I dont know of anyone who has a reply or comment back from them yet on this issue.

Must say I was pretty shocked when I found out that Anita Roddick had sold out to Nestle.

Bio- I dont understand why others on that site arent questioning your links being removed- surely they should value freedom of speech?

theUrbanDryad · 03/07/2007 16:42

mush - if they valued the freedom of speech, they wouldn't be on NM would they? NM seems to exist in a permanent state of pink fluffiness and "hun" and everyone agrees with everyone else, because debating isn't allowed. it is ego masturbation of the very worst kind.

theUrbanDryad · 03/07/2007 17:56

bio - i notice no-one's responded to your comments...

mush4brains · 03/07/2007 18:58

UD- never posted on there so dont know how "hun" they are, went to try & find the discussion but couldnt- - but could be looking in the wrong place.
Just as an aside DH is trying to get one of the armed forces to boycott Nestle from all their tuck shops - he's implemented the ban this week on the one he has control over- bless.

moondog · 03/07/2007 19:15

Good for your dh Mush!

theUrbanDryad · 03/07/2007 19:15

here it is mush...

mush4brains · 03/07/2007 19:31

Thanks UD- is that for real? No debating? Umm am pretty glad I get my advice from MN!!
