My 4 week old just slept through the night?!

Okay so maybe I’m a little mad for freaking out and some of you might be thinking I should make the most of it... but is it normal (I know it’s not common!) for a 4wo to sleep through the night?!

My DS last had a feed at 10:30 ish last night, and I’ve just woken up totally freaked out around 5am to an awake but not crying little man fairly content in his crib.

Me and my partner have been setting alarms through the night to make sure he doesn’t go longer than 3-4 hours without a feed as we’ve been concerned about dehydration in this heat but they didn’t go off last night. He has around 4 ounces through the day every 3 hours and occasionally some cooled boiled water as advised by my doctor.

Has anyone else experienced this so early on and would you make the most of it or continue setting alarms?

Thank you x

DS was sleeping from 10-5 at that age. Then he'd have a bottle and sleep until 8. Kind of miss those days 😂

Make the most of it

WooYa · 04/08/2018 05:45

Make the most of it! DS will wake when he's himgry. Enjoy Grin

WooYa · 04/08/2018 05:45

Himgry? Hmm definitely meant hungry haha

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 04/08/2018 05:47

Do not tell anyone in real life!

frenchfancy · 04/08/2018 06:18

Normal in this family -but definitely don't tell people. My health visitor told me to wake my 3wk old if she slept more than 4hours!

donkeysandzebras · 04/08/2018 06:54

Tbf, that's not "sleeping through the night" but missing a feed. It's a brilliant feed to miss as, if you're disciplined enough, and go to bed straight after the late evening feed, you can get a decent 6 hour chunk of sleep which is more than many with similar age babies will have for months.
If this continues, check for signs of getting enough food (wet & dirty nappies) and also get him weighed and check he's gaining weight. DC2 did this from 6 weeks for a fortnight during which time he lost an oz. As it was, he went back to waking every 2 hours and continued that for the next 18mths.

newcupcake · 04/08/2018 06:55

It probably won't last so enjoy it whilst it does !

MaverickSnoopy · 04/08/2018 06:56

My first was like this. She forgot to explain the rules to my second though.

fruityb · 04/08/2018 06:58

Ds did 11-5 at that age - then went to 9-7 about 3 weeks later. Night feeds didn’t last long with him. I never woke him to feed him and he did just fine.

RidingMyBike · 04/08/2018 07:58

Mine first did this at two weeks, then a few nights a week until six weeks (unfortunately you could never tell which nights it would be!) then every night. It was amazing and made a huge difference to how I was feeling. You won't be popular if you mention it at baby groups though ;-)

They've basically chosen to drop one feed. Nothing wrong with that as long as they're not dehydrated and doing nappies ok.

Baubletrouble43 · 04/08/2018 12:27

Perfectly fine, my dd1 did this at 5 wks. By 10 wks was doing 12 hrs per night. No sleep training. I was lucky!

Baubletrouble43 · 04/08/2018 12:28

Never lost weight either, in fact her growth was epic!

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 04/08/2018 12:34

All of my DDs were sleeping 10-5.30ish from about 1 week! There weight gain was fine. I felt like the luckiest mum in the world....
Until now! Last night my 4 and 2 year old woke up 3 times! Because, well why not, they wanted to play! Hmm

Don't tell real life people though!

Can I ask how and when your babies are feeding ?
My 4 week old is so irratic and every night is different. He tends to want milk every 2 - 4 hours at anytime of day or night. He doesn’t settle well in the late afternoon either until he sleeps at about 8. (Maybe I should start my own threadWink)

Cornishclio · 04/08/2018 18:41

I would make the most of it so long as he is getting the right amount of milk over the 24 hour period.

pastabest · 04/08/2018 18:46

It's luck of the draw.

DC1 woke every 1.5- 2 hours through the night until they were 9 months old.

DC2 is 7 weeks old and sleeping 11pm until 5am.

Having been the parent with a non sleeping child I know not to take it for granted Grin

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 04/08/2018 18:48

My youngest went long periods from birth, I used to set my alarm to feed him as he had reflux and needed to gain weight. From 8 weeks he was waking once a night and from around 12 weeks sleeping through.
I would suggest setting an alarm to check the baby though throughout the night, even if not to feed.

Powerless · 04/08/2018 19:03

My daughter slept through the night from birth! That very night in fact.

Powerless · 04/08/2018 19:04

As for those saying it won't last, well my DD is 3.5yrs old now and still sleeps through the night??

RidingMyBike · 04/08/2018 19:16

Mine is the same - slept six hours every night from six weeks and was doing eleven hours by five months. Has carried on sleeping 11-12 hours every night ever since (now 2.7 years)

firsttimebabybirther · 04/08/2018 19:17

My DS started sleeping through at a week old , not to be that dick mum whose child of course slept through the night at a week old , but genuinely he did. Not usually recommended but he was also 9'6 born and put on weight apposed to loosing it and was drinking enough to feed the whole gang of babies on the maternity ward for a week.

He's now 5 months old and has never woken through the night , usually 8.30pm - 7/8am works for us.

NEVER tell exhausted new mums this in rl because , well , that would make you a knob.

Spudlet · 04/08/2018 19:19

DS did that. Like, twice. He was well over 12 months before he slept through reliably!

Enjoy it while it lasts, if it does go on and you are worried, speak to your HV. But the chances are that it won't, alas.

LupiPie · 04/08/2018 19:20

My DS slept through from birth Smile Enjoy!

I woke up at 7.30am on the post natal ward to crying babies... none were mine Grin

He's 8 months now and always does 12+ hours

heartsease68 · 04/08/2018 19:20

You haven't given his weight. That's what matters!
