So ds was 9mo yesterday. With this hot weather he has been waking every 40min to 1 hour for atleast a week and wont settle without the boob. This morning he has an orange stain in his nappy which i am guesding is urates from dehydration. What can i do. He wont drink barely any water. Its 29c in his bed at night with a ceiling fan on

If he is drinking that much breast milk then he shouldn't be getting dehydrated. Can you offer more breastfeeds through the day whilst it's hot if he won't have water? Also not ideal but try watered down fruit juice to see if he will drink that instead.

InNeedOfALieInNow · 08/07/2018 08:20

Will he drink anything else? Or from a different cup/bottle? Can you give him lots of liquid foods like yoghurt, cucumber, fruit? And just keep offering the breast. If he’s feeding so often it’s unlikely he’s dehydrated, just hot. Could the nappy stain be anything else? If you’re convinced it’s urates maybe call your doc?

Jellybabie3 · 08/07/2018 08:24

OK. He may well just be hot. He doesnt feed for long, so I do suspect there is an element of comfort. I am shattered though.

Yesterday he ate things like tomato, cucumber etc but I will push the fruit juice today

We will keep an eye on him for the next few hours and if no change we will call the doc.

Thanks

I’ve linked the NHS guidance on dehydration below, as dark wee can be a symptom of dehydration, check out the section on under-5s for other symptoms you need to look out for.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/dehydration/

It’s probably worth giving 111 a call for advice, they’d be better placed to advise whether you’re okay to stay home and try and get more fluids into him, or whether he needs to be seen about the urates in the nappy.

I’d also hang onto the nappy for now in case you do decide to take your DS to see a doctor.

PatheticNurse · 08/07/2018 08:33

Are his nappies wet though? If so then he isn't dehydrated.

ch0c0milkrox · 08/07/2018 08:35

Drinking/eating more and weeing more could be type 1 diabetes.

Jellybabie3 · 08/07/2018 09:27

Yeah his nappies are wet. Hes just obsessed atm. Hes wanting to latch on every half hour sat indoors atm. So hot bless him. Gonna check with 111

He is thirsty. The first milk he gets is the drink... then it turns to "food"

Jellybabie3 · 08/07/2018 10:25

Yeah that makes total sense. We are pushing the water. If he can take to that it will definately help

Breastmilk ice lollies? Fruit ice lollies?

Melon, cucumber, etc.

Paddling pool and bath - I often caught my 2 drinking the bath water.

Thissameearth · 08/07/2018 11:07

29 degrees at night with fan on is so hot. Are you in UK so no air con? We open windows in her room with curtain shut all day with bedroom door open and windows open throughout the same floor to get air circulating then fan goes on a while before bed with cool bath and then just nappy and 0.5 tog grobag. It’s been 30 in room during the day but come bedtime we can usually have got it down to max 24 with above measures, then usually turn fan off or down and leave window and bedroom door open but still feels so hot. It’s really hard isn’t it. Ice in front of fan = air con I think? As baby is bf I don’t push loads of water personally, only offer water with meals but offer extra bfs in heat and give her watermelon and homemade ice lollies and water rich veg broccoli as parts of meals. I would probably call for med advice with suspected urates in nappy in this heat (esp when feeding so much) and under 1. threshold for seeing a baby is v low.

If you've got a doidy cup, that's the only thing my DC would drink from at that age (refused all bottle sippy cup etc.)
A bath with lots of splashing and play?

Jellybabie3 · 08/07/2018 12:01

Yes in UK so no air con. We have just filled some 2 litre bottles with water and put them in the freezer for his room tonight. Everything is open but curtains are drawn. I think the blackout blind is stopping air coming in.

Thanks for all your suggestions ☺ i will rry everything

Could you and he sleep anywhere else in the house temporarily? Maybe downstairs if that’s cooler?

Jellybabie3 · 08/07/2018 19:43

Well it's bedtime for DS and despite playing musical chairs with curtains and blinds its still 29C in his room. I've just cranked the fan up and put the frozen bottle in there. I think I have to wave a white flag and resign me and DS to hourly wake ups until it cools. We must just have a heat trap house. Good for winter I suppose!! Thanks for all your help x

Btw doc said hes a little dehydrated so weve been really pushing water and 'wet' food. So far hes better with the basic ikea tippy cup. Although tomorrow I may have a go at the basics tommee tippee one (think it may be better for his teeth). Hes had a cool bath before bed. I will keep an eye on his nappies of course.

If not then get a calpol syringe or any syringe and feed him water /juice with that and also teaspoons of water/juice

SeaToSki · 08/07/2018 20:04

Make a towel really damp and put that underneath him in the cot. The evaporation will keep him cooler

neighneigh · 08/07/2018 20:14

Have you tried watermelon for the dehydration? It's messy but a brilliant way of getting liquid in them

Jellybabie3 · 08/07/2018 20:30

Yeah he loves melon but you've reminded me to get some in again, thank you. Hes a fruit bat like his mum 😀 He loves cherry tomatoes too which is good. He just sucks the juice out. I am going to try kiwi tomorrow I think, he has never had that.

I havent tried the towel trick. You dont mean directly lay him on it? He'd be damp right? Under the cot itself? (Being dim here).

The bottle seems to have helped a little albeit its melting very fast. Thank god I stuck it in a bowl!
I'm actually now torn with pursuing with doidy/open cup as others online (google) suggests this may be better for ebf babies? Albeit the t.tippee basic cup has excellent reviews. I have brought so many bloody cups......Aargh.

OP posts:
Jellybabie3 · 08/07/2018 20:31

I meant preserving with the doidy/open cup....aargh auto correct.

OP posts:
Jellybabie3 · 08/07/2018 20:31

Persevering....

OP posts:
motortroll · 08/07/2018 20:59

If he's already started with a sippy cup then stick with it. The basic tommee tippee free flow ones are best (tried and tested on my 3 and all my friends anyway lol)

At night I had the same issue with the baby's room being hot I just got them off to sleep then moved them to my bed which is a cooler room. Then back to their room when I went to bed and it was cooler. Do you think that would work?

Jellybabie3 · 08/07/2018 21:14

Possibly or even downstairs. Going to have to do something, hes waking every sleep cycle (40min) and hes not even feeding now, he wants the boob but for comfort. Hes sweating and noticeably agitated. It mustst be really freaking him out this weather. Self settling is a thing of the past

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 08/07/2018 21:18

If he's dehydrated, my DF suggested me drinking sports drinks while I was bfing, they rehydrate much quicker than water.
