Just because I'm in the US and probably don't know, but what is wrong with Nestle? It's seems that MN is anti-Nestle, and I don't really know why.

How did you select which formula to use NB?

Report
kks · 16/04/2007 17:19

I don't get that? Why would anyone bottle feed because of packeging and logos? I bottle feed because i had to give up bf for my own sanity.

MKG - it does help, thank you v. much. Will do research - and not mention the nestle connection to DH or he will start on the "evil empire" lecture . Since DD will be 8mths by the time we go I guess it is follow-on milk I need (we are talking holiday, BTW, not emigrating - I just don't want to use our entire baggage allowance on baby supplies!)

The question is not whether the packagaing made you formula feed. It is once that decision was made, how did you choose which formula to use.

hello mears

first baby so I just used what they had in the hospital and carried on using that at home - SMA.

With 2nd and 3rd babies used Cow & Gate can't remember why really except it tasted nicer (to me!)

Bet you read what was on the C&G packet and decided it sounded good

Report
kks · 16/04/2007 17:23

Oh ok. I was having a rough time so when i gave up bf my mother went and bought the formula and she chose Cow&Gate. My baby loves it.

Exbury,

Follow on milks are just labelled 9-24 months or step 2 here. But honestly no one I know uses them. There is usually not a big selection of Step two at the store because they aren't popular.

mears - do you know (am I bad?) I don't think I ever read the packet. I had no idea what was in it just assumed that as millions of babies had been successfully reared on it, it must be ok.

(We're talking the 70's here!)

MKG - so people just stick with Stage 1? or is there a "stage 3" which you go straight to? Stage 1 is fine with me - DS was on "first" milk until he was about 12 months as I remember.

On the nestle question - as far as I understand (or listen to) DH's rants, it is the "food science" approach that annoys - they will have exactly as many additives as they can get away with in any country (we found out the hard way that in S. Africa that means lots) - but with baby milk I am not sure it really applies as Wyeth are a pharmacutical company anyway...

sorry - I am confusing everyone - MKG was providing invaluable info on milk brands in the US for our holiday .... in the UK I will probably stick with Aptamil First until DD moves on to cow's milk and/or the first time Waitrose only has the 6mths+ one

Exbury,

I know exactly what you're thinking. I took our ds to Mexico and ended up taking all the formula I would need for a week. Needless to say the trip home was a lot lighter.

We don't have Stage 3. It's just number 1's which are 0-12 months and Step 2 which is from about 9 to 24 months.
Here are some links to help you look at products.

Thanks MKG - much appreciated.

Our trip home probably won't be lighter as we will have bought DC as many seasons' worth of clothes as we can carry - but all the same I refuse to take all her supplies - it's not as if we are leaving civilisation completely

EXACTLY MB. Formula manufacturers know that they need to grab potential customers with a picture or logo that will attract them to y=thrir product. No-one is going to spend loads of time reading the packet!!

I started with Farleys as thats what came in bottles in the hosp, when I got out I realised that it was cheap and Aptimil was the most expensive, therefore, very wrongly I assumed it was better. Ended up on SMA white eventually I think.

This time I went for SMA, simply because it's available everywhere. I have now switched to Farleys because they sell it at Lidls which is my closest supermarket, so is easy to get.

I understand that there is some difference between whey based milk and cassein (sp) based milk, but I am not sure what or why.
