ok, you might've seen me bang on about this on other threads, but i think it is absurd that it is not illegal to harass a mother who is nursing in public.

i'm thinking of organising a mass public breastfeed, somewhere like Speaker's Corner, with loads of families, kids, babies, picnic etc. it would be very peaceful, no placards, no speeches, just a load of people, chilling in the sunshine.

i'd try to get the Press involved, issue a statement, raise awareness and let the Government know that this is an issue that won't go away.

i'm going to have a chat with my local LLL advisor at the Baby Cafe, see what she thinks. but in the meantime, i would love to know what other people think of the idea, how many people would be willing to come to something like that and show their support.

TIA

chilledmama · 11/04/2007 20:40

Yellow- sorry lost...whats amijee?

yellowrose · 11/04/2007 20:47

chilled looks like you have lost the plot too - I don't blame you - it is the name of a poster !

sparkymummy · 11/04/2007 21:04

Is it just a London thing or is there anything going on "up north" as I'd be up for it!!

theUrbanDryad · 11/04/2007 22:20

i can't organise regional things as i don't really have the time or the contacts, but if you're part of a bf-ing group feel free to co-ordinate your bfing picnic with ours! if you don't have a local bf-ing group, email the LLL and they'll point you in the right direction.

theUrbanDryad · 12/04/2007 09:17

how would people feel about Parliament Square instead of Speaker's Corner? Not concrete (better for my piles) and more to the point!!

chilledmama · 12/04/2007 09:39

UD- You name the place and I'll be there...one place much the same as another in terms of traveling

theUrbanDryad · 12/04/2007 11:02

ok - amendment (sorry)

Saturday 19th May, Parliament Square (look for the placard ) from midday.

there. i'll tell the LLL and we'll hopefully have nice weather for it!

Cazee · 12/04/2007 14:35

Sat 19th May, right, I will be there. Should we also mention this on some of the other topics? I am sure many Mnetters would loke to support this.

theUrbanDryad · 12/04/2007 15:41

i've linked most of the postnatal clubs, and put a thread on the meet ups topic. but feel free to link in anyone you like, and bring as many people as you can from RL!!

Cazee · 12/04/2007 19:57

I am going to particularly enjoy bringing my sister, who once told me that women should bf their babies in the car, not in public. Time for her to do a little penance!!! I presume she has changed her opinion now, as when we are out shopping together I doubt she would want to sit with me in the car!!! Best check...

theUrbanDryad · 13/04/2007 08:39

oooh i meant to say, please can we keep this bumped? and spread the word spread the word people!!

btw - we're meeting here look for the placard!!

theUrbanDryad · 13/04/2007 18:49

bump

Lio · 13/04/2007 21:42

okey dokey UD

Twinklemegan · 13/04/2007 23:04

I would attend this with my (now bottle feeding) DS if I was anywhere near London. But I just have one plea - please please PLEASE don't do it in a way that could be perceived as "militant" because you could end up putting off as many (or more) people as you persuade.

Twinklemegan · 13/04/2007 23:09

I'm sure this argument's been done already, but wasn't the original idea to make it more like a big picnic/family day out? That would be so much nicer than setting up an artificial mass-feeding somewhere. How many women would really be comfortable feeding in the foyer of a city bank, for example, even if though they theoretically can? Many more women would feed in a park, for example, so seeing groups of women doing just that would be much more persuasive I think.

And why not roll it out countrywide?

Lio · 13/04/2007 23:10

Twinklemegan, it is a (non-militant) picnic

Lio · 13/04/2007 23:11

and from UrbanDryad "i can't organise regional things as i don't really have the time or the contacts, but if you're part of a bf-ing group feel free to co-ordinate your bfing picnic with ours! if you don't have a local bf-ing group, email the LLL and they'll point you in the right direction. "

Twinklemegan · 13/04/2007 23:14

I'll freely admit I've only skimmed the thread (backwards ) but I mainly picked up on the stuff about charging into a City bank and breastfeeding in the foyer...

yellowrose · 13/04/2007 23:25

oh god, twinkle, no no no, that was NEVER suggested it was a half-joke that back fired, these poor women intend to do nothing of the kind !

Twinklemegan · 13/04/2007 23:40

Thank God for that!

kk - good for her - i just wasn't interested in going back to the City (for many many different reasons, a lot of it due to unethical practices of the companies i represented) otherwise i would have done exactly the same. i became very disillusioned with a whole host of what goes on in the Square Mile.

i also did not wish to combine a life of full-time, child-led bf with a life in the City. ds is nearly 3, he shows no sign of giving up bf, we are both happy to continue

i appreciate not every one hates working in the City as much as i did
