ok, you might've seen me bang on about this on other threads, but i think it is absurd that it is not illegal to harass a mother who is nursing in public.

i'm thinking of organising a mass public breastfeed, somewhere like Speaker's Corner, with loads of families, kids, babies, picnic etc. it would be very peaceful, no placards, no speeches, just a load of people, chilling in the sunshine.

i'd try to get the Press involved, issue a statement, raise awareness and let the Government know that this is an issue that won't go away.

i'm going to have a chat with my local LLL advisor at the Baby Cafe, see what she thinks. but in the meantime, i would love to know what other people think of the idea, how many people would be willing to come to something like that and show their support.

TIA

theUrbanDryad · 08/05/2007 19:16

ym - i sent the forms off today, so will hopefully hear something by the end of the week. by law they have to give permission, so i'd be amazed if they refused and would want to know on what grounds!!

devon is a hell of a way to travel! whereabouts are you? i stayed in N.Devon (near Bideford) for a bit and loved it. am very

yellowmummy · 09/05/2007 13:33

coming from Bideford actually! our local bf group's got a picnic in Victoria park organised here on wednesday 16th at 1.30pm, everyone welcome: bring a plate of food.

was planning to come to london sometime anyway (tto see friends/family) and want to show our support.

indiemummy · 09/05/2007 21:05

Hello! I have people coming from Brighton too! Hopefully there will be a good turnout. (by the way what do we all do if it rains? bring umbrellas?) see you all there on Sat 19th xxx

Cazee · 09/05/2007 22:34

You do all know it is the FA cup final that day don't you?! It is causing much trouble in our house. "No DH, footie mad DS, you don't want to watch that, you want to come and watch me bf dd, on grass..."

theUrbanDryad · 10/05/2007 09:34

Cazee - come on your own with dd!!

not sure about rain - i think umberellas are a good plan, buggies with rain covers, rain ponchos etc!

Good grief I didn't even realise this was an issue! I bf where and when my kids have needed to. I've never given a thought as to whether anyone would be offended .
Who could be offended by a child feeding?
Mind you if anyone asked me to stop, I doubt very much they'd ever ask anyone again lol.
What a ridiculous notion, stop feeding your child indeed, stop watching, you freaks!!

theUrbanDryad · 13/05/2007 10:42

haha sorkycake, my thoughts exactly

theUrbanDryad · 15/05/2007 13:53

WE HAVE PERMISSION!!! WOO HOO!

Jaysecond · 15/05/2007 14:08

Hope everyone has mountains of fun. Boy, those babies are not going to know what has hit them, they will be constantly being fed!!!!!

Hope it goes peacefully and that the weather is good to you all.

I have only just read the thread, not sure i would be abloe to make it, will speak to hubby when he gets in, maybe we need a day out!

All the best

theUrbanDryad · 15/05/2007 14:12

ok - have just spoken to the GLA. we need to stick to the paved areas. they cannot give us permission to be on the grassed areas as we do not have Publi Liability Insurance. if we do go onto the grassed area we will be moved on. basically, the issue stems from the fact that the police have liability for the Westminster pavement, but the GLA have liability for the grassed area. so i will advise you all to bring blankets/folding chairs to sit on! (actually, i'd advise you to do that anyway!!)

Lizzzombie · 16/05/2007 08:18

SO - how any ideas on how many people are coming along UD? x

Snaf · 16/05/2007 08:31

I can't believe I've missed this thread. Just want to say well done to UrbanDryad for organising this and have a wonderful time - hope the weather stays good for you all!

Unfortunately I can't come and support you as a) am not feeding any small people atm! and b) am handing out leaflets at the Nestle demo that morning

Love a bit of direct action. Have fun!

theUrbanDryad · 16/05/2007 10:32

anyone who needs any detais, CAT me or email [email protected]

no idea how many people are coming, maybe 15-20...that's what i've told the police anyway!

TenaLady · 16/05/2007 10:36

Sorry but dont agree. If some folk are genuinely embarrassed about seeing ladies breastfeeding in public then surely it should be respected.

Its not your fault that they feel like this but clearly as a breast feeding mum of the past I could quite easily pop myself into a position within the restaurant where i would go completely unnoticed.

I think you will find its folk that find it a little distasteful to flop it out in full view. I have seen this many a time and it is unneccesary.

not sure that political activism go hand in hand with motherhood.
