what's your perfect breastfeeding moment?

DD2 is 11 months and a bit addicted to BF. Some days I feel so tired and fed up with it all, recently we've had teeth issues and up all night issues but this afternoon DD1 was asleep and DD2 too, when she woke up after an hours sleep and I went upstairs climbed into bed with her (she sleeps in our bed) and popped a boob into her mouth. She was all pink and warm like a little baby piglet and I fell asleep feeding her and it was perfection. (until DD1 woke up and came in with pooey nappy!). Do you ever get one of those perfect breastfeeding moments? It felt like my milk was flowing from my heart to hers and I've never felt closer to her.

I have always loved it when my babies (I have three) drank and then gave a really contented sigh - lovely.

And many a night when I was lying in bed with a baby latched on and feeling so so close to them.

I have been breastfeeding near enough non-stop for nearly six years now, but I will def. miss it...(not stopping yet though, ds only nine months!)

Aww that's lovely to think I might have some of this to come. Ds (16wks) has just started smiling and patting me occasionally which is lovely.

oh god so many, in four long and happy years
sitting on Brighton sea front with the sun streaming down on both of us.
dd1's bedtime feed, and as she got older the negotiation for "one more minute" with her holding up a finger to ask for it!
dd2's squeal of joy on lifting my pyjma top and finding a special prize.
and I know it wouldn't be to everyone's taste, but feeding both of them at the same time, with dd1 stroking dd2's hair was a very special time

dd1 used to call it "more (her name for it) all togedder" and it used to be her holy grail...
It looked gorgeous but tbh it felt a little weird

AbominableSnowMum · 09/03/2007 00:13

The first time both boys signed "milk" to me, and smiled when they realised they could communicate with me - it's the first word they both learnt to sign.

With DS1, I remember when he was three months old and I was feeding him in the night - just me, him and an orangey glow from the night light. I was thinking "oh, I'm so tired, I wish he'd finish and I could go to sleep" and then it hit me very clearly that in the blink of an eye he'd be a big hairy man and not want cuddles - and I relaxed and enjoyed it - I'll treasure that moment forever. I loved it when I had a bath with him when he was about 5mo and he looked surprised that his dinner had got in the bath with him too - he looked at me, very surprised, then started feeding and chuckling.

With DS2, it's the euphoria I felt when his blood sugar levels were 3.2 then 2.6 and the hospital stopped the blood tests and left me to get on with it. And feeding him from above so his chin was nearest the lump when I had mastitis - and all I could see was his chin moving up and down and his earlobes waggling. He's a comedy baby

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/03/2007 01:06

The first time they cupped their hands around my boob as they fed.

The sound of swallowing as they gulp down milk.

When they have fallen asleep whilst feeding.

Feeding in bed in the morning.

What a lovely thread, I have tears in my eyes reading this. My DD is only 10 weeks, so I am looking forward to all this!

WaynettaSlob · 09/03/2007 09:34

Didn't last at breastfeeding for long with either of my DSs,but with DS2, I still remember the first time I managed to feed him without it hurting, and I was sitting daydreaming and looked down to see this gorgeous content little angle suckling away and staring up at me adoringly. I melted!

FrannyandZooey · 09/03/2007 09:40

Feeding in the middle of the night with his little face gazing up at me in the dark, and feeling like we were the only people awake in the whole world

The moment when they sort of pass out in a haze of joy and just lie there with their limbs sprawled and a bit of milk dribbling down their chin

Breastfeeding then being given a big kiss and smelling his sweet milky breath

"Mummy it tastes sweet as a mango" (his ultimate accolade)

The look of cheeky glee on his face when I got in the bath with him "Now I can have BATH MILKIES"

and watching him "breastfeed" his own dolly and teddies with a secret little smile on his face - the knowledge that breastfeeding doesn't stop with the last feed, it is something he will carry with him to his own family life and I feel that his own children will be long and happily breastfed too

yellowrose · 09/03/2007 09:45

Oooooohhhh what a lovely description Jenkeywoo

Ds giggles and fools around sometimes when bf, but I love it because it is all part of our incredible physical bond. I see it as this very special "language" that we have between the two of us. I will be sad when he self-weans (he will be 3 in June).

expatinscotland · 09/03/2007 09:49

The first time she had an entire feed from the formerly chewed up left boob. I can still feel her little tongue and see her temple moving in and out as she suckled.

And then drifted off to sleep.

Jenkeywoo · 09/03/2007 14:35

FrannyandZooey - I love hearing of your DS breastfeeding his teddies - DD1 wasn't able to breastfeed and when I first started feeding DD2 she was a bit taken aback by it but now she is my biggest advocate - if Heather cries Emma tells me off and tells me Heather needs 'mummy bot-bot' - she got so cross when DH and I went to a wedding a few weeks back and left them with my mum - 'mummy no go out, Heather need mummy bot-bot'!

She regularly breastfeeds her teddies and especially her minnie mouse toy - she takes great care to lift up her top and position minnie carefully at the breast! She also likes to sprawl out in my favorite armchair and puts her feed up on the stool in the way I do when I'm feeding her. I always felt doubly heartbroken that I couldn't breastfeed her as I know that you are more likely to breastfeed your children if you were breastfed yourself - now I feel confident that breastfeeding is such a positive part of our family life that she will want to carry this on if she gets the chance.

forgot to say , glad I'm not the only one who loves milky breath! it is so sweet and gorgeous and sometimes I do lean in and let her breath on my face so I can sniff it.

I love the fact that ds is nearly 3 and still has bm breath ! It is one of those sweet scents that stay with you for ever, like the scent of their skin and hair

purplemonkeydishwasher · 09/03/2007 14:49

ooh milk breath! my poor DS whenever he yawns he either has my or DH's nose stuck in his mouth!

A month or so ago I was BF my 17mo DS in the morning in bed. we were both half asleep. all of a sudden he let go, looked at me and said "mmmmmmmmm" and made the little motion he does when he thinks something is yummy.

trixymalixy · 09/03/2007 16:04

only been bfing for 6 weeks so not much to go on, but at the moment DS is sucking away with one hand holding my finger and the other hand stroking the side of my breast. very cute!

mawbroon · 09/03/2007 17:04

I love it all! DS is 16 months and I love the cuddly bedtime feed. I love the morning feed where he romps all over the bed. One minute he is sitting on my head and the next minute he is diving for my nipple (with a very good aim may I say!) and ending up latched on in a position that you won't see in any breastfeeding books!! Who says males can't multitask? DS can breastfeed and woof at the same time as well as signing when he hears an aeroplane or a bird outside during feeding. When I get in the bath with him, he can hardly feed for laughing. I will be so sad when he gives up, but hopefully it won't be for a long time yet.
Lovely thread

AbominableSnowMum · 09/03/2007 17:32

I love it when she is feeding, and a gets this very serious look in her eyes, stares at me for a few moments and then...

Jenkey I would think watching your mother breastfeed a sibling, at an age when you were old enough for it to become a life long memory, would have at least as much impact on your likelihood to breastfeed yourself, if not more!

FrannyandZooey · 09/03/2007 18:08

I also wanted to add one more perfect moment

ds decided to stop a few weeks ago after nearly 4 years of breastfeeding

Some people may feel this is strange but I asked him if he would have one last feed and I savoured every moment of it

WelshBoris · 09/03/2007 18:21

Before having DD I was never maternal, never wanted children and certainly didn't think I'd breastfeed.

So after coming out of surgery after having my c-section, my parents and DDs dad had gone home, I was in the semi-intensive care ward. I could hardly moved, and the nurses were wankers.

I reached over, grabbed DD by her babygro and pulled her onto me. She latched on. I cried buckets. She drank like she had been doing it for years.

Am crying at the memory of it, one of the best parts of motherhood for me. And one of the turning points in my life.
