After a course of antibiotics and cream for thrush in my nipples I went to walk-in centre today cos I still have pain not while feeding but afterwards like shooting needle type pains. Nipples are fine not sore at all. Nurse examined me and said no sign of infection or thrush in nipples and told me to give up bf as its obviously that causing the pain.
I told him I had heard is was possible for thrush to enter the ducts and he asked where I had got this information from then dismissed it. He brought up a page on his computer about mastitis and told me that I haven't got mastitis a fact that I am well aware of having had it 5 times during feeding my last 3 dc. Am I over reacting is this pain normal even though I haven't had this before.

I'm having trouble bonding with my ds and don't want to give up bf but starting to think I might not have a choice.

Sounds like thrush to me
Do you think you have thrush?

misdee · 17/02/2007 17:32

what were u perscribed previously?

moodywren · 17/02/2007 17:36

Was given Nystatin cream for nipples and drops for ds. GP said thrush was infected and gave me erythromycin for that it was 2 wk course and have been taking it 12 days, slight improvement but seems to be getting worse again. Nurse said no sign of thrush on nipples.

That Nurse was clueless....
are you sure your lil one is latched on trueky the best way? Took my ds a fair while to get the hang off, and oddly enough he was my thrush baby...
I am sure there is somehting abaout shooting pain after feeding, but I can not think of what it was sorry....will have a look at Kellymom, she may have some wise words!
Also, is it possible you get to see a proper BFC in person!
Really hope tiktok will come along , she'll know what to do for the best!

misdee · 17/02/2007 17:39

well it sounds like it could be thrush to me, tiktok.mears may know more about what to ask for.

roseylea · 17/02/2007 17:39

Bear in mind that not all nurses are that pro-brfding therefore they might not be that strongly in favour of your contiuing.

If you want to carry on brfding it might be worth contacting someone like La Leche League who will go the extra mile in helping you to carry on as long as you want. They have lots of info and I think will also come and vist you to give practical help if needed wit hthings like latching on etc.

Here's their website - la leche league

3andnomore · 17/02/2007 17:39

truely not trueky, lol

TheBlonde · 17/02/2007 17:40

I thought antibiotics were a likely cause of thrush so I don't see why that would have got rid of it - it would probably make it worse

moodywren · 17/02/2007 17:43

Nurse also said its unlikely the antibiotics would give me thrush in the breast, more likely to cause vaginal or oral thrush.

I am pretty sure I have him latched on right as feeding itself isn't painful and my nipples aren't cracked or sore. Pain is more deep in the breast.

TenaLady · 17/02/2007 17:48

whoah, I feel for you. It sounds like a good reason to give up breast feeding. I found myself getting depressed when I tried and tried without success, the pain, the guilt all that stuff. I preferred a happy comfortable me so that I could concentrate on my baby and enjoy him.

Did my best with my breast but couldnt continue. Good luck x

I even went to breast feeding classes had help from midwife and ended up with mastitas (cant spell it) cracked sore nipples and that pain you are explaining, so dont feel guilty about giving up.

moodywren · 17/02/2007 17:52

Will ring HV on mon and get her to visit. Will print off all the info you have all given me so I am well armed and hoopefully I can get to the bottom of it.

Moody,I really wouldn't listen to anything a generic nurse has to say.
You need a b/f counsellor who actually knows what they are on about.
You also possibly need to be treated with fluconazole (pill form) to get rid of the thrush.

I have suffered badly with thrush and went through hell. Your symptoms sound similar to mine.

Let me see if I can find you the Breastfeeding Network info.

In the meantime, phone the Assoc. for Breastfeeding Mothers' helpline. Lovely folk.

moodywren · 17/02/2007 17:56

Moondog is it possible to buy the fluconazole if the gp won't prescribe it. I am convince it is thrush but just keep being given cream which I know isn't working

OP posts:
moondog · 17/02/2007 17:56

Here

You will note that the World Health Organisation okays uses of fluconazole.

I would be wary of yuor HV even. Most of them don't know much about b/feeding.

Don't stop doing something through the ignorance of the people who are supposed to look after you.

moondog · 17/02/2007 17:58

Yes Moody.
It is not a prescription drug. You can just work out what you need (ABM can help you with that if you find it confusing) and take it.

i wouldn't bother telling the chemist either.
Just get it.

I went from a physical and emotional wreck, unable to even stand up straight as the pain was so bad,to a normal person in about 4 days.

moondog · 17/02/2007 17:59

Cream never helped me either, even though I tried it for days on me and the baby.

I never tried the diet thing, but am very healthy, eat only unprocessed food and have live yoghurt every day.
Weird....

3andnomore · 17/02/2007 22:35

I assume it's the candida diet you are talking about...cna't say I have tried it, I would never had the will power for it...but as far as I can tell the first rule is cutting out sugar as that it what thrush thrives on.
Not sure how good this website is....but might be worth a look if you feel you would like to try it.

You could Try Natural Healing for the Thrush using Silver Healing in the form of the Silverlon Breastpad

This doesn't mention anything about treating thrush but i discussed it with one of the ladies here (Sterny) who used the Silverette to heal cracked nipples, her DH is a Scientist and beleives the theory of Silver Healing would treat Thrush... Just a thought, i will bump that thread up for you to read
