After a course of antibiotics and cream for thrush in my nipples I went to walk-in centre today cos I still have pain not while feeding but afterwards like shooting needle type pains. Nipples are fine not sore at all. Nurse examined me and said no sign of infection or thrush in nipples and told me to give up bf as its obviously that causing the pain.
I told him I had heard is was possible for thrush to enter the ducts and he asked where I had got this information from then dismissed it. He brought up a page on his computer about mastitis and told me that I haven't got mastitis a fact that I am well aware of having had it 5 times during feeding my last 3 dc. Am I over reacting is this pain normal even though I haven't had this before.

Deter, that silver thing is interesting. In the Telegraph a few days ago there was an article about how a trust is trying pyjamas and bedclothes which incorporate silver in fight against MRSA.

MMMmm that is VERY interesting. I do honestly beleive it would work. Would just like to understand the reasons behind how it works!

Thanks for the link to candida diet website but tbh I don't think I could survive on it. You seem to have to stop eating anything really enjoyable. I just wouldn't have the will power.

It sounds very much like thrush to me - you have my sympathy!

You can buy fluconazole over the counter (Canestan Once, I think), but it will cost you a small fortune to get enough to treat thrush in the ducts. From what I remember, I had to take a loading dose of 2 pills, then 1 pill per day for a fortnight to clear up thrush. The over the counter stuff gives you a single pill and costs around a tenner. And that's if you can get the pharmacist to sell it to you.

My GP was very reluctant to prescibe it for me. I went along armed with a print out about the safety of fluconazole from the Breastfeeding Network and was quite specific to the Gp " I want a prescription for this". I think he just gave it to me to get rid of me - although I am normally quite shy, I was very persistant on this occasion.

Good luck.

I agree Moody.
I would never have gone on some sort of diet.
That would have finished me off completely.

moodywren · 17/02/2007 23:20

Think I will give GP one more try, have seen 3 different drs so far and one nurse. I am convinced it is thrush and will go armed with a print out. If I fail this time I will just have to buy it.

If you talk to a bf counsellor, they may be able to direct you to a properly informed GP???

3andnomore · 17/02/2007 23:31

lol moody, I don't blame ya...lkike I said I had a look at it and that was as far as I got...

When I had thrush I went to see the most junior GP in the practice, the trainee and marched in and said "I have breast thrush and need a prescription for x,y and z"! I reckoned she'd be far more likely to do what I wanted than one of the older ones!

GPs are not formally trained about BF & most have never heard of intraductal thrush.

ProfYaffle · 18/02/2007 09:12

you can buy generic fluconazole now which is much cheaper than the brand names - about half the price iirc. I think it was a Co-op chemist I got it from.
