Don't know how to link but just saw that article, I know 1 year is longer than a lot of people bf for but i hardly thought of it as 'extended'. Not that whether its extended or not matters, but i felt quite offended by reading that - her tone seemed to be that anyone feeding that late is a bit strange and selfish - or am i overreacting? Sounds like she has a few issues to me...

What a fucking lunatic.

Aloha · 30/01/2007 23:34

I think she needs therapy for her own childhood tbh. The bit about being too afraid to breastfeed because it will 'invite punishment' really is so sad. She must have had a truly terrifying childhood.

hunkermunker · 30/01/2007 23:39

It hasn't been written by somebody who's had a normal upbringing, has it?

nappyaddict · 30/01/2007 23:42

to me extended bf is doing it when the child is 3+

harpsichordcarrier · 30/01/2007 23:43

actually this woman reminds me of someone:
dysfunctional childhood
massive ishooooos about their mothers
propensity to tell mothers what to do and make sweeping statements based on dick all
propensity to talk a whole load of shit
hmmmmm, now it is on the tip of my tongue

hunkermunker · 30/01/2007 23:51

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, I know!

Pick me!

Aloha · 30/01/2007 23:52

Tsk tsk!

PinkTulips · 30/01/2007 23:55

naughty HC

hunkermunker · 30/01/2007 23:56

You're not wrong though, HC. Not At All.

ILoveDolly · 30/01/2007 23:56

a 12m old is still basically a baby, with the physical and emotional needs of a baby. it is sad that our natural impulse to nourish our young is diminished by western society and as mothers we are made to feel that we are doing an unnatural thing by chosing to do so. it strikes me as a relic of 19th century ideas that womens 'natural' behaviour and instinct was flawed and dirty and should be suppressed. bf our children until we (mother and child together)are ready to stop reasserts the natural order and of course is very anti-capitalist/matriarchal ().

hunkermunker · 30/01/2007 23:58

I have a 12mo - he's definitely still a baby.

He can't reach the fridge or anything yet!

But he can sign for bmilk [conservatory]

ILoveDolly · 31/01/2007 00:20

i never did signing with dd mainly because my dh laughed at idea that it would work and i chickened out - so jealous now as friends babies are signing 'milk' (and 'hat'?) and mine just says dadada baba to everything.

hunkermunker · 31/01/2007 00:21

How old is she? Try it now! She'll probably pick it up v quickly.

ILoveDolly · 31/01/2007 00:27

12m do you think - its not too late?

hunkermunker · 31/01/2007 00:48

Nah - not at all! Be consistent, don't introduce more than a couple of signs to start with (things she's interested in - DS1 got "cat" pretty early, as well as milk). Nothing to lose by trying!

AitchTwoOh · 31/01/2007 01:08

my dd can do butterflies and fish. and that's it. not hugely useful...

OK will send it in but thought I should add dsomething in about the punishment bit, not sure what to say though. Busy today but will get to it and let you know if iget a response.

lemonaid · 31/01/2007 10:23

2yo DS this morning as I tried to get into the shower so I could get ready for work: "Other feed, mummy.... MORE FEED!! ...feed...Feed...FEEEEEEED!!!" (eventually he was mollified by being allowed to apply my shampoo). I just do it for my own selfish reasons, you know...

lemonaid · 31/01/2007 10:28

Could never get anywhere with signing with DS under a year (he was too busy manically running everywhere) but picked it up again around 13-14 months and he acquired about a dozen signs pretty quickly. Definitely worth trying IMO.

Tatties · 31/01/2007 14:37

Oh no ILoveDolly, 12mo definitely not too old to start signing!

ILoveDolly · 31/01/2007 20:41

cool - i bet she will learn sign for food quickly she is a little piggy

Tatties · 31/01/2007 20:42

"More!" is also a good one

ILoveDolly · 31/01/2007 20:51

yeah just as long as its not 'hat' or 'fish' (so useful)
