Subjected to inane tv in the gym,saw ad for said product, and summat along the lines of
'You've given him C&G all along to help him grow so why stop now??'

Yeah, why stop being completely and utterly ripped off for even longer than you already have been, you dullard of a mother???

I checked out the price this afternoon.

Ah yes, I posted on that very early on (in a similar vein to you). I've seen how its been going and have steered clear. Baying mob mentality and all that.

Terribly, terribly sad.

AitchTwoOh · 08/11/2006 00:44

should have done the same thing myself... it's just i think that whole 'i'd lay my life down for my child' is such offensive bollocks if you've never had to. i hope i would, by christ, but thank god i've never had to confront that decision. aaaaanyway...

moondog · 08/11/2006 08:40

Qootie,very interesting link.
Particularly the point of how initially through promos and money off coupons, the product s initially much cheaper.

God,how I laugh mirthlessly when people come on MN asking brightly whereand how they can get 'free stuff.'

So...we have established that it is nine times the price of ordinary cows' milk, right??

Why would you buy special milk for a 3yo? Even the days of buying full fat for DD are dimming into the past now that she is 2 and a half. And I only ever bought ordinary formula when I went onto mixed feeding despite them being older than 6 months. Decided follow-on was more likely to constipate them!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/11/2006 10:25

Yes aitch...its as offensive as the 'starving children in Africa' argument too.

Yes, Moondog. According to the Sainsbury's to you website. That's where I got the prices from.

mamijacacalys · 08/11/2006 11:35

My bf DS would never take formula of any kind, just went straight to water and cow's milk from a beaker. Also seem to be heading this way with 4mnth old DD....

So, fortunately, never had to make the complex decision of whether any sort of 'follow-on' formula was any good.

But I would make the sweeping statement that most well informed parents can see through the advertising, and this goes for all the baby stuff out there, not just formula or food. (BTW the thread on how much you spend on the weekly shop is testament that most people budget wisely and do not fall for the marketing hype for things by buying own brand etc)

But have enjoyed the thread, partic the initial barracking between lulumama and moondog!!

suedonim · 08/11/2006 14:17

Marketing under the guise of 'Growing Up' milk is quite insidious - there's no end to it. I saw milk in Indonesia aimed at the obvious ie babies and toddlers, but also pre-school children, 'Scholars', teenagers, pregnant and bfing mums. I don't know what the difference was between these 'special' milks and the bog-standard milk but I doubt it justified the extra cost.

I'm now living in Nigeria and I give the country full marks for not having succumbed to this sort of ploy. I've seen no advertising of formulas and the shops just sell formula and ordinary milk (UHT and powder), nothing aimed at specific groups.

thankyoupoppet · 08/11/2006 14:31

I saw an add for 'growing up milk' this morning.

It's insane. A very intellegent friend of mine buys that for her 2 year old. she is skint and a nurse. So goodness knows how many others fall for it!

It shouldn't be allowed, a bit like the nappy adverts showing 5 year old kids with pull-ups on, I guess the idea there is to drip feed the notion that all 5 year olds wear nappies so no need to potty train -just KEEP ON BUYING THEM!

WhizzBangCaligula · 08/11/2006 14:34

What pisses me off about the 5 year old pull ups, is tht if your child does wet the bed and needs a nappy at night, you can't get his size - you have to buy pull ups, which are much more expensive than nappies.

I never "got" pull ups at all actually. Neither of my kids used them, they're completely unnecessary. Once you stop needing nappies, you don't need a transitional pad.

Twiglett · 08/11/2006 14:37

I used to know someone who was still making up formula bottles for her 2 year old

I never understood why but she felt she was doing the best for him

always thought she was a bit of a pratt tbh

DizzyBint · 08/11/2006 14:40

so what is it then? just formula with added vitamins?

AitchTwoOh · 08/11/2006 14:59

think so. that's what the woman told me in Tesco, anyway.

Bozza · 08/11/2006 15:09

agree caligula on the nappies. DS ended up in pullups at night because I ran out of nappies and borrowed some off a friend and then he insisted on them and I rather feebly gave in. DD has never had them and now never will. Instead it is hunt for the sleeping beauty knickers every morning but that is another subject.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 08/11/2006 15:09

ds1 has hipp growing up milk. it is £2.99. if i try to give him cows milk after 2 bottles of it he cant poop.
any tips here as i hate buying it when 6 pints of blue top is less than £2.

Bozza · 08/11/2006 15:13

How old is he?

UCM · 08/11/2006 15:48

Growing up milk is good for camping if your LO still demands a bot bot. Apart from that it's overpriced.

Moondog, I do love you when you come on milk threads (and I FF) but you are so passionate

moondog · 08/11/2006 19:04

You only love me on these threads UCM????

Lady, why would that be I wonder??

Maybe he just needs more fibre in his diet (and/or less milk?)

I think it's also another way of getting around the ban on advertising formula - by keeping the brand name and product at the forefront. If a parent is going to start buying formula they may be more likely to buy something from a manufacturer whose name they recognise.

moondog · 08/11/2006 19:21

very true pc
