When did your DC stop using a Highchair?

Ds is only 8 months but I hate his highchair. It's a bitch to clean & takes up sooooo much floor space. I want to buy a new one but don't want to if they stop using them in a few months. He'll need to be in it until he can sit at his own little table and chair - how old roughly is that? Blush
When did your DC stop using a highchair?
Thanks!

Dd is 18 months and still uses her high chair, but will sit on a normal chair if there's no other option.

I think he was around the 2yr mark.

Get yourself to ikea and buy an Antilop (think that's the right name!). They're very cheap, come apart easily and are a breeze to clean. We bought an expensive padded one for DD and hated so gave it away and got the ikea one which she stayed in til she was around 18 months.

DD2 is 3 and still uses hers - admittedly it's a Tripp Trapp one so it's pushed up to the table. She used an Ikea antilop until she was about 18 months (I think) again pushed up to the table instead of using a tray from when she turned about 1.

When we are out for dinner etc she often asks for a "big chair" (meaning the sort of high chair that doesn't have a tray but goes up against the table) so that she's at the right height to eat and chat without having to balance on cushions or kneel up etc. She's a real wriggler, so she's happier in a seat that fits her.

If your high chair is that much of a pain, I'd invest (I think they are only about £20!) in something like the antilop - they wash really easily (have put ours in the bath to wash it down after a particularly mess painting afternoon) and when DC are a bit bigger they are good for getting them close to the table and eating with the family.

we're still using the antilop at 19mo and will for a good while yet. I prefer him up at 'our' table rather than at his own little one.

Artandco · 13/04/2015 16:43

Tripp trap still used at 5, as it turns into a junior chair so they are at the correct height for table but can climb in and out

GetOutOfBed · 13/04/2015 16:53

Dd(3) uses a booster seat that straps to the chair. Has done since she was about 18mo and it easily comes on and off and travels to family/friends.

FelixFelix · 13/04/2015 16:54

Get the antilop! I had a massive expensive all singing and dancing high chair for dd and I hated it. Palmed it off on to the in-laws and bought an antilop for about 12 quid and I love it. You can put it in the dishwasher!!

ThereisnoFinWay · 13/04/2015 17:03

Ds2 is just stopping using ours at 23m. I can't wait for it to be fine tbh as I hate it, should have bought an antilop!

chloeb2002 · 14/04/2015 08:46

I love I've found this.. I'm in Australia... Maybe I'm
Odd but recently saw a picture of a U.K. Son in a high chair, he is at school in September. I was gob smacked.
I have 4 dc. All sat at the table by 2. Even ds with special needs sat on a chair..
I am a little suprised so many kids rather than babies use big chairs?

May I ask why? Grin

My kids get told to sit for the meal, and sit Grin

dementedpixie · 14/04/2015 08:51

I have never seen a school aged child in a high chair. my 2 moved from the highchair to a booster seat attached to a chair at around 18 months

Millie3030 · 14/04/2015 08:53

Hated our highchair, big clunky, took up too much space. Got rid of it when he turned 1, got a booster seat that straps to the kitchen chair and you can strap him in. Life changing!!!

Only1scoop · 14/04/2015 08:54

Used it until about two at the table....

Mothercare have 2 different types, a plastic sturdy one and a fabric type fold up one. Can't copy the link for some reason.

Chloe - because if they say on regular chair they can't see food as only chin height. The Stokke trip trap is not a baby chair, if you look at it is states newborn to adulthood on box. It is basically a chair that adapts over time. At newborn if is like a car seat/ bouncy chair up high so they are part of the table and baby can't be tripped over. Then has harness and bar for weaning age. Then you take bar and harness off and the wooden seat and feet panels adjust up and down according to how small they are. But they can just climb up and down like a regular chair except feet aren't swinging around as fit, and they can actually see food as high enough.

My 4 and 5 year olds happily sit and use correct cutlery and glasses for dinner, and can actually cut food as they can reach. When out they sit on normal chairs but have to kneel up to reach which isn't great for comfort or posture.

Til nearly 3. But sitting nicely at the table is important to us.

Hobby2014 · 22/04/2015 21:25

Thanks everyone. I think we're going to buy the ikea one at the weekend Smile
