Night Feeders Part 5. Calling all women who find themselves feeding when they'd rather be sleeping!!

Writerwannabe83 · 01/10/2014 21:07

This is a thread for anyone who wants support when things seem tough - especially for the women whose babies don't like sleep!!

We'll do the usual introductions:

I'm a first time mom to my 6 month old, EBF son. It's been a rocky few months, lots of ups and downs but we've finally reached a point where he's asleep by 7.30pm and only waking once during the night.

He very rarely naps in the day - and when he does it's only when he's in the car or his pushchair. It's very frustrating!!

And the last little thing about us is that we have just started the weaning journey - it's fun but messy!!

Welcome wee! How lovely they share a birthday Grin

Well DS managed a 5 hr stretch, fed, then 2.5hrs, fed and then 3.5hrs and up for the day just after 7.30am so not too horrendous.

Got the blw book to start reading thru in prep for next month, wasn't brave enough to try it with DS1, giving it a go this time tho! Hoping he will kind of copy his brother eating at mealtimes since he is obsessed with watching him Smile

weebairn · 08/10/2014 09:20

cariad yes it was kind of incredible! I started doing insane things like going running in the mornings...
Them she got to 5 months and completely stopped sleeping again Grin Babies eh....

The most important thing is never to boast about your child's sleep because it probably won't last and it's almost certainly nothing you've done Wink

Dp is still on paternity leave and DD1 is in nursery today so taking advantage of these easy days while I can... Hope everyone is ok this morning. Coffee....?

Writerwannabe83 · 08/10/2014 09:21

Well DS was only awake for an hour after his 03.20am feed which is much better than his usual 2+ hours!!

He was awake again 3 hours later but I think that's because he was disturbed by the noises my mom was making as she was getting ready for work. She lives in a bungalow so there's no escaping noise. I fed him in the hope he'd go back to sleep but no such luck so we are up for the day now Smile

Thanks cannot ! -waves sleepily-
I did blw with dd1 and loved it. Possibly because I am lazy and have a high tolerance for mess in my life ;)

notadoctor · 08/10/2014 09:52

Hello all! Welcome weebairn! We were away at a wedding at the weekend and sleep has gone a big to pot since... Was supposed to be moving DS to his own room this week but am using tiredness as an excuse not to face it - secretly I also want to snatch as many snuggly co-sleeping cuddles as I can before he's big enough to kick me in the face!

Cannot - I've done BLW with both of mine and DS has really taken to it because of copying DD. It's so cute watching them both tuck into Spag Bol together!

Cannotbelieveit · 08/10/2014 10:10

Will be sad when it's time for blw in a way as it's been lovely just me growing and nourishing him for all this time!! Strangely looking forward to him making mess with food! Wink

squizita · 08/10/2014 10:30

Sammy I use the same wake up methods as Weebairn (hi there again!). I find at night one boob - then change - then 2nd boob with compression works.
Unless as happened last night, she takes out her sleep suit every time! Once by wee, once by an unusually epic poo, once again by wee when changing.

It can't be a medical thing, the timings and products so to speak are fine. Just a really bad day and perhaps I need to find another nappy brand!?! Leaked out of her nappy leg onto me when feeding.
Good news: even with these she manages a night in her sleepy head. With 2 lots of both parents soothing her. But still! Leak proof she'd have slept superbly.

Cannotbelieveit · 08/10/2014 11:08

What nappies does everyone use? I'm using up the last of our pampers as we are getting leaks a lot lately and going back to Aldi mamia

Also I think I might go up to 4+ for the night

Cariad007 · 08/10/2014 11:33

We started off with Pampers New Baby as the blue line to tell us when he was wet was useful. Then used their Baby Dry nappies for a bit until we tried Asda Little Angels. They were just as good and half the price of Pampers so we've stuck with them. I have no complaints - we use Action Fit for day time and Comfort Dry for nights.

Cariad007 · 08/10/2014 11:35

(I tried reusables once and lasted a day with them!)

weebairn · 08/10/2014 11:45

I use a few different types of cloth nappies and not really having any leaks yet. It's a fair amount of washing and faff though and I don't think I'd have managed with my first newborn with so many other things to adjust to. I started using them with toddler when she was about 3 months old I think, though we've stopped here and there for a month or two due to stress, return to work, illness etc. so we're already in a nappy washing routine here so I thought id give the newborn bit a try too this time. I think they work better but it's quite a lot to get your head round.

When I did use disposables I always found the supermarket own brand or wilkinsons ones just as good and half the price.

-waves at squizita-
So lovely to see you with a baby after all your problems and worries getting here!! How are you doing? I seem to remember you saying you had a really good fast straightforward labour??

My 2nd labour was wham-bam-thank-you-mam 4 hours! and on my due date, so I have to stop whining about having an overdue lengthy one with dd1 now Grin

squizita · 08/10/2014 12:22

Ooh ASDA! We have one locally. Been using pampers (not impressed) and Tesco. Will try them for sure.
Wee Yep quick and textbook apart from a long ish tear (but straightforward to stitch thankfully. 2 am Dr and senior mw gave 2nd opinions it was just a long 2nd degree and could be done there and then! Phew (but glad for 2nd opinion). Grin Baby bean is now full of beans!
She's been out to NCT club and Costas (mw advised me to do this to prevent anxiety making her a "cotton wool baby" as she is what they call 'long awaited' and pfb) and touch wood bar wind and nappy rash seems happy enough!
On the topic of nappy rash - some sudocrem and traces of cotton wool sometimes stick to the 'tender' parts of her labia (ie the pink bits inside) - as a lady I can imagine it stings to clean them off but it has to be done. Any suggestions or do I just have to be mean at bathrobe and ignore the grumbles? I used bath water this time but it seems to migrate there from the folds round her legs.
DH did not realise that sudocrem shouldn't go on so thickly and can combine with cotton wool itchily when you have lady parts! He felt awful when I spotted it this morning it never occurred to him!

AuntieMaggie · 08/10/2014 13:25

sammy be warned - formula doesn't necessarily mean longer sleep and can make them windier. Make the most of the shoulder/chest cuddles - ds doesn't like them anymore :(

cannot which blw book are you reading?

nappies - I've used Aldi, asda, Wilkinson and pampers and had no problem with any of them.

AuntieMaggie · 08/10/2014 13:32

I'm struggling trying to put ds down to sleep during the day - I'm been trying this morning but he wakes up and cries every time so I had to give up in the end because he was exhausted and screaming. He goes down fine at night in the same crib!

Cannotbelieveit · 08/10/2014 13:43

Auntie you just have to persevere with the cot naps in the day. DS can take 5 mins or less and no whinging to fall asleep and other times it's 30 mins of whinging then he falls asleep! I just want him to get used to the consistency of it. This morning he slept 1hr40 in there.

blw book

squizita · 08/10/2014 13:47

Cannot and Aunty with a newborn I find it the other way round. She loves her bed for naps... but thinks night time is nap time (with wakey time in between!) too! How funny how things change. If only they remembered and did both. :)

cookielove · 08/10/2014 13:51

aunt my ds is the same. He won't even entertain the idea of sleeping in his bed during the day but sleeps in it at night :S

Cannotbelieveit · 08/10/2014 14:04

Don't worry too much about bad habits tho as I was napping on our bed with DS1 til he was 10/11 months old and I only put him in his cot for day naps consistently just before he turned 1! And he was fine with it in a week

Cannotbelieveit · 08/10/2014 14:05

So wish I could put names to faces for you guys and your babies as I feel like I "know" most of you a lot!

Sammyviv · 08/10/2014 14:21

Nappies
Well I was using mamina ALDI but DS got nappy rash, HV suggested using a brand so went to pampers I like both although I find pamper keep the poop away from the skin.
In reluctant to go back to aldi incase his nappy rash gets worse. I bought asda nappies but found the new baby ones too small for my 9lb baby

It's a shame we can't put pics on here
In also happy to use DS name is anyone else? Just might give us all more identity my name is actually sammy too

Sammyviv · 08/10/2014 14:22

Aunt maggie ...oh Shock thanks
I do like my shoulder cuddles, I can't believe my DS is a month old already!!!!

Cannotbelieveit · 08/10/2014 14:35

I think I've used their names before!! My 18month old is Hunter and 5 month old is Ryder. I'm Trisha! Hello Sammy! Grin

AuntieMaggie · 08/10/2014 14:46

Can't believe my ds is almost 4 months - due to various reasons I feel like I've slept through the summer and suddenly here we are and it's Oct.

cannot I want to be able to put him down for at least part of the day so I can do other things like eat and shower - wouldn't mind him napping on me if I could do that!

Writerwannabe83 · 08/10/2014 14:46

I use ASDA own brand, I think they are called Little Angels and I'm really happy with them. DS has had two naps so far today, the first one was 1.5 hours and the second was 30 minutes. He seems to be feeling a bit better today and has had some toast. He seemed a bit under the weather this morning but we are currently my sister and he's really perked up!! He does live his auntie Grin

I'm Claire and DS is Arron Smile
