We have been having problems with ds from about 2 weeks old (now 21 weeks), after many trips to gp, lots of sleepless night, and a lot of tears, we were told by gp 99% its refux. Been given gaviscon, think he has started to settle.
He if bf and not on solids. Is there anything as far as feeding i can do to help.

littlepiggie · 11/09/2006 22:36

No, putting on wight fine, he is now about 16 1\2 lb. He brings bits of sick up after most feeds (when i sit him up). When he burps, sometimes he is sick, if he is not sick they sound wet and makes him cough. Him tummy makes girggly noises alot. Gets very upset and bad tempered

hi littlepiggie
DS almost 11 wks and been diagosed here in the states. Has been on Zantac for two weeks, seems to be helping. Docs advised sitting him up after a feed...to ease digestion, also not winding too vigorously as acid more likely to rise n he'd be in more discomfort. He is gaining enough weight, almost 14lbs!!! So thats the main thing and if your DS is putting on weight take comfort knowing he's healthy, just feeling uncomfortable

nulnulcat · 12/09/2006 20:53

my dd had chronic reflux, she ended up in hospital a couple of times as her oesaphagus was so inflamed,

you have probably been told most of stuff but i found when i was bf the best position for her was in the rugby hold one and she was quite propped up on pillows so she was almost upright, the hospital suggested it would be more comfortable for her if i fed her upright, also had to keep her upright for at least 2o mins after a feed which was a bit of a pain in night feeds!

feeds were easier to keep down if she had small feeds more often, she kept the feed down better if she was fed every hour to 2 hours rather than 4 hourly - apparently the trick is to not let them get hungry as that increases the acid in their stomachs

presuming you already have his mattress raised at an angle, i also put her to sleep on her tummy against all the advice i know but it was the only way she would settle and the hospital were fine with me doing that

i also had to wean her at 17 weeks however this was on the advice of a paeditritain as she was not putting on much weight

hope some of this helps, cant beleive it has taken you so long to get a diagnosis it took me 6 weeks and i thought that was bad!

but it does get better the bigger they get, she is nearly 3 now and it hardly affects her unless she gets a bit over excited after eating and she can tell me when her tummy hurts so i can give her the gaviscon

good luck x

We had a realy bad day yesterday, Today was ok , but i went out without gaviscon, screamed blue murder.
Cot has been up for ages, he started with colic at 2 weeks, and this seemed to help, now i know why.
Does it help when they go onto solids?
Kept been told he will grow out of it, that there is nothing wrong and that some babies just cry.
Kayzed, i just went to my gp (had not seem him. just others at sugery) and said i had been fobed off already but i know something is not right, when he is happy he is really happy, but would then blow up for what seemed like no reason.
He would want feeding even though i knew there was no way he could be hungry, but would then start screaming after a few seconds, was sick ofter most feeds, although not a lot, tummy made a lot of girggly noises, only slept with cot tilted and was just very angry in general.
Even more convinced it is reflux as today at about 2pm (had gaviscon at 8am, having it 4 times a day)he stared with the crying, not feeding properly, and been sick, got hom about 4pm, gave him gaviscon and he fed on and off for about 2 hour, no fussing, no sick.

littlepiggie the solids really helped in my case, she had a small amount of baby rice before a feed and it seemed to help her settle but early weaning isnt right for everyone and my dd has a lot of health problems now and allergies and i cant definately say this wasnt because i put her on solids at 4 months

littlepiggie · 12/09/2006 22:07

dont want him on solids yet, but knowing it helps is kind of like somthing to aim towards

I have found things so hard with ds, all he seems to do some days is cry. I have found not letting him get over tired helps, i think he gets tired quicker if its bothering him, and just going out, walking, even walked to town yest to get out the house with him as it seems to take his mind of it.
is she small enough to carry in a sling? ds is to heavy, but i wish i had when he was smaller as he is happier upright.

I have tried everything, ds has been so bad. I am finding routine is helping him, i cant get him in a feeing routine yet as he is bf, but a sleep routine hes helped with him getting to tired and makes it easier to get to sleep.

Hi both

Im having exactly the same problems with my 10wk old DS. Its so frustrating. A lot of people seem to think that it is linked to a potential allergy to cows milk - does anyone know of an alternative formula? My DS puked big time after colief put in milk, and after one attempt at ranitidine he has also been the sickest i have ever seen him - so not sure if this suits him or if he just needs to get used to it. He is on gaviscon (2 sachets per 8oz every feed, although he only has 5oz) but the effects now seem to be wearing off. He always had a real good appetite but this is wearing off a bit just recently, although Im now sure know if it was the acid making him hungry as little piggie said. He always suffers with hiccups, is squirming and crying/refusing bottle, loads of wet burps, bad taste in mouth and sick rolling down his chin (when its not flying out of his mouth). Weight gain has been brilliant - 12lbs 8.5oz at 9 wk 4 days. Just recently he has brought more and more of his feed up if not all of it with less time in between sessions. He used to do this on average once a week, now its more like once a day. He is recovering from a cold which started on monday of last week - might this make a difference to him? He never used to cry as much as he does now....

Am sorry I only scanned the thread as have 2 x Ds's under 18 months and I have approximately 3 hours to myself when I am not sleeping. DS1 First night after birth, violently sick after B/feeding to cut a long story short, vomited approx 10 times a day, every day, at least 4 sets of clothing. I tried Gaviscon, Colief, Infacol. Then went onto formula as was so distressing and ordered SMA Staydown for Mild reflux. No difference. Saw tons of Doctors and H.visitors and all of the old/experienced one's said once you start solids he will be ok, "give him a farley rusk" this was when he was about 12 wks!!!

Did Cranial Osteopathy for 6 sessions....he slept like a baby after each session and still vomited but seemed to calm him and reduce the pain (he used to cry whilst sleeping)

Hate to say it but at 4 months gave him solids and there was a noticable difference (the old bird wasnt so mad after all) eventually it got better and better, as his stomach muscles grew when he strated crawling about 7 months there was hardly any brought up and when walking at 12 months it finally stopped. Even though I was 100% against it, IMHO it was definately the solid food that helped. Good Luck. x

Am bf so not sure about formula, but we were ff fed and i remember my mum saying my sister had soya milk.
Seem to be 50/50 with good and bad days, Untill about 4pm today ds was very moody, fussing during feeds, had puke on his chin none stop, soggy puky tops (gave up on changing him, got him even more wound up), gave him anouther dose of gaviscon and put him to bed for an hour at about 3, and he was a different baby, lay on his mat chatting to the dog.
Kayzed, what is dd on?

How old is she?
I felt like pulling my hair out today, nothing was right for him.
How may times should i give him gaviscon and when, at to moment i gave it at 8am, 11.30am 3pm 7pm, then none through the night.
