I've been exclusively BF my 14 week old DD. I used to express 1 feed a day, but she started sleeping 12 through the night from 9 weeks, and so I didn't bother to express anymore as she was only feeding 5 times a day. Around this time her weight gain slowed right down, obviously due to a sudden drop in her feeds, so I began to give her a dream feed at around 11pm. I have the grandparents coming over on Friday to do some babysitting on Friday, and I'm toying with the idea of leaving Formula for them to do the late feed, as I've really got out of the habit of expressing. It's only one feed and I would consider doing it maybe a couple more times in the next few months. It can't be that bad can it? For some reason I feel guilty even considering letting Formula pass her lips before 6 months...

pumpkin - having not done any successful BF yet forgive me if this is nutty but is there any chance of expressing some milk over a few days before you go out so there's enough for your parents to feed her while you're out?

tiktok · 06/09/2006 13:10

liquid - have you see what Dr Hale says here

He seems ok about the sort of meds you are talking about....

PumpkinPi · 06/09/2006 13:12

liquidclocks, I can do that. It can be time consuming - and sometimes I just get fed up of constantly having something attached to my breasts!! Really, I just fancied the idea of going out willy nilly - and not having to spend days organising everything for just a couple of hours away from the baby. It's laziness I suppose... I'll be pumping first thing tomorrw. It also just occured to me that Coeliac disease runs in DH's family - although no sign yet in DH. I suppose that counts as an allergy.

OP posts:
liquidclocks · 06/09/2006 13:26

pumpkinpi - (sorry about semi-hijacking your thread) given what you've said about your DH if it were me I'd probably decide it was worth the hassle too. The test for coeliac is really simple, has your DH had it?

Tiktok - given that I've been taking immigran during pg and baby has been getting doses that way anyway it does seem odd about the advice not to BF 24 hrs after taking - that's why I want to speak to the people on the drugsline. Dr Hales site says it's preferred but nothing about abstaining from BF so that looks hopeful. Don't want to take risks though, it is a strong vaso dilator and I dont want to risk causing haemorrhage or circulatory problems in the baby.

liquidclocks · 06/09/2006 13:27

oops, sorry, vasoconstrictor. Recovering from migraine at mo - brain all fuzzy!

PumpkinPi · 06/09/2006 13:36

My DH had a test a few years ago and it was clear, but his Father had a late onset - he didn't need to start a gluten free diet until he was about 50 I think. It apparently follows the male line though, so DH will almost certainly end up with it eventually. Hopefully DD will not be so unlucky.

pumpkin, what about having a supply of frozen ebm in the freezer. it'a bit of a pain to build up a little stash but it would give you the freedom to go out as you please and just replenish the stock afterwards?

Piffle · 06/09/2006 13:43

When I had to go into hospital suddenly and was advised not to bf for 12 hrs after the general anaethetic, dp used the frozen breastmilk up first and then tried a formula when he could not get in to visit me with dd for her night time feed.
End result a night with 4 bouts of projectile vomiting. Green liquid stools and the next days constipation. DD was 5 mths old.
Could have been a coincidence, I made sure I had litres of expressed milk frozen after that episode.

lilymolly · 06/09/2006 13:47

Let me clarify- when i gave dd formula I felt like I was poisoining her!! and when I gave up bf and went to ff the rush of hormones from giving up made for a week from hell! And as your dd is only 14 weeks old I think its fair to say that you are still finding your feet with everything. the decision to give form is yours only. if ff was so bad why is it allowed in this country? god allergies are going to occur regardless of giving them formula- exposure to allergens etc.
Give the girl a break. All Pumpkin is looking for I think is a little bit of assurance that her dd is not going to suffer any after effects of a bottle of formula- if she can get a break then this will encourage her to continue bf. My mention of crap was not about your post, but the general response to these type of threads about ff. This scaremongering about how formula is bad does no body any where any good at all- it only adds to peoples guilt. As for the hormone comment- hey if 14 weeks post birth she has no hormonal input then shes lucky cos, my hormones have just settled down and dd is 8 months old. That said she can do what she like when she likes - each to their own. Just giving pumpkin pi some support cos I wrangled with the same issue when my dd was this old.

PumpkinPi · 06/09/2006 13:57

Thanks for all the support. PinkTulips - I did manage to amass a supply when I was expressing everyday, but it has slowly been used up and I haven't replaced it. I will express - especially after reading Piffle's post! That sounds absolutely horrid and I would be utterly depressed if DD ended up ill as a result of my own laziness! Lillymolly I'm glad you understand where I'm coming from as far as needing a break is concerned, but I'm not on the verge of giving up yet - just coming up with fanciful ideas of an easy life...but of course, you never have one of them with a baby in tow!

lilymolly · 06/09/2006 14:02

you are welcome- good luck and enjoy night out- I waited 7 months before I left dd- but once done once I have never looked back!!!

tiktok · 06/09/2006 14:02

Lillly, where is the 'scaremongering about how formula is bad ' on this thread, and the 'crap' and the 'rubbish'? These are words you used.

I think it's been pretty supportive and informative on the whole

lilymolly · 06/09/2006 14:06

Oh lets let it go!
put my comments down to having a bad day!- it just boils me up when I hear people saying bad things about formula- dd is on formula as is millions of other babies who are happy and healthy. You gave her the facts which is great, but I think she was just looking for reassurance- not facts- maybe I read between the lines wrongly (bad grammer!)Sorry for any offence

Mum2FunkyDude · 06/09/2006 14:18

My son had several "bottles" in the first 3 months, he survived and had breast milk until he was 8.5 months. I used aptamil (you can buy ready made up boxes about 45p ea) I tried SMA but it constipated him. Aptimil and cow&gate contains pre-biotics (like in breast milk, it keeps them regular.

Good god do all these threads have to end up in a row, good v evil etc

give it a rest fgs

Everyone has an opinion and nobody is 'right' so just do what you think best (whilst taking on board everything that Tiktok has to say of course).

Now, group hug {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

tiktok · 06/09/2006 14:37

Happy to let it go

Lets just agree not to accuse contributors to mumsnet of scaremongering, or talking crap, or rubbish, or making people boil up, or of saying bad things about formula....when they have done none of these things, ok?

moondog · 06/09/2006 14:49

'you gave her the facts which is great, but I think she was just looking for reassurance'

lilymolly 2:06 pm

That has got to be the doziest thing I have ever heard on one of these threads.

Hey Lily, could you give me some reassurance on the threat posed by Islamic terrorists to cheer me up a bit? No nasty facts mind,'cos they might make me sad.

lilymolly · 06/09/2006 15:22

we made up moondog. said i was having a bad day. yep dozy thats me... comparing bf/ff with terroism?? yeah same thing-
SORRY to everyone i have managed to upset on this thread. hope original poster is ok.

PumpkinPi · 06/09/2006 17:27

I have decided to definately express, but I was glad to hear some different opinions - that's the point of Mumsnet isn't it? I agree that comparing feeding issues with terrorism is a bit extreme!

OP posts:
amijee · 06/09/2006 17:58

moondog - I think what you said was bang out of order.

This is just typical of the threads on this website - there's too many damn people with an axe to grind.

I could get deeply philosophical and ask - "what is truth" and who establishes the facts?

At the end of the day - we are all mums - NOT researchers on this subjects. I thought the purpose of this site was to share experiences - good and bad and not to give sermons.

Yes, we are all from different professional backgrounds and that may influence some of what we are saying but ultimately we are mums looking for answers from other mum's experiences.

moondog · 06/09/2006 18:04

Hang on,I quoted wrong.
Let me try again to get the full effect.

'You gave her the facts, which is great, but I think she was looking for reassurance-not facts'

,guffaw>

Heathcliffscathy · 06/09/2006 18:10

arghhhhhhhhhhh

lilymolly · 06/09/2006 19:24

thanks for that amijee- letting it go now...... not getting into argument, I just thought original poster wanted some reassurance from other mums that what she was doing was ok and was doing no harm. again after the shitty day I have had I aint going to go there

LaDiDaDi · 06/09/2006 21:06

I wouldn't worry about it lillymolly. It's obvious that you were trying to offer help and reassurance, now that you and tiktok have sorted out your differences and the op seems to have enough info and reassurance, everyone else, including me should leave well alone .

Jalexandra · 06/09/2006 21:56

Lillymolly, you shouldn't have to apologise for having an opinion. You are right about mums supporting each other, not critising each other.
Moondog, there is no need to be so singleminded. Surely you can see that other people have had different experiences from you, and what is right for your children is not right for everyones. Also, does anyone think of the mother's health in these threads?
