Calling all nighttime feeders!! Let's all keep us company during those early hours of the morning when we're feeding instead of sleeping!

This is a thread for everyone to chat to each other about their experiences of night time feeding, the good, the bad and the ugly!

There are already a few of us who have been chatting about this in another forum for a few months now but we want to migrate over here to meet more sleep deprived parents!!

Log on and post, no whatever silly hour it is, and vent away about how knackered and stressed you are!! There's a good chance someone else is up and feeding crying with exhaustion too!!

Introductions: I have a 7 week old son, first baby and exclusively breastfeed. He's normally a nightmare to settle to sleep, screaming for hours on end, but will go for 5 hour stretches of sleep!

Hello 6x - how long does regression last??!

FrankelandFilly · 17/05/2014 17:32

Anyone else having issues keeping their babies cool? I've just been up to the bedroom and the room thermometer says 25 degrees Shock I think I'll have to put DD down in her grobag (1 tog) in just a vest tonight, would that be enough? I don't want her to get too hot or cold!

It's been 2 weeks since I stopped BFing and one breast (the one that had mastitis) is still swollen. A red lump has developed on one side and I've a horrible feeling it might be an abcess. Anyone else had to deal with this? I'm making an emergency Drs appointment on Monday to get it checked out but in the meantime I've all kinds of horrible scenarios going through my head Sad

Writerwannabe83 · 17/05/2014 20:40

I spent last night pondering over what I should put DS in overnight due to the room being much warmer - in the end I just went with his usual vest and baby-Gro.

However, I have some vests that have long sleeves (legs are still bare) and I'm tempted to just him in one of those tonight and a pair of socks to keep his feet warm. I would then just put his usual blanket on him which would cover his bare legs and go as high as his nipples.

I took him to the O.O.H GP today due to my worries about his dark brown custardy-consistence and his very horrid cough. The GP wasn't particularly concerned about either Hmm His cough is horrendous, really dry and barking...the type of cough that if we had our throat would be in agony. He retches with it and struggles to get his breath and it's quite upsetting to watch. Me and DH aren't really happy that the GP was so relaxed about it, but what can he actually do? It isn't like he can prescribe cough medicine. I guess we will just have to ride it out Sad

frank - maybe you should see a GP tomorrow as opposed to waiting until Monday? It already sounds quite nasty and infection can spread very quickly. The sooner you can start treatment for it the better.

Evening ladies. DS is asleep next to me in bed, he's been down about 15 minutes. I'm just having tea and toast in bed as DH is still away. I'm getting much better at doing evenings/bedtime solo.

Frank - I've just put Edward in a sleepsuit with his 1 tog grobag, left off his vest. I think a long sleeved vest would have been ideal but I don't have any. The room is 22 degrees. I hope that's ok.

Anyway I should turn in, been out all day pushing the pushchair and I'm shattered!

writer my GP surgery doesn't do weekend appointments. I'm probably over-reacting and Googling too much so am reasonably happy to wait till Monday, it's not got any worse over the last 24 hours and is not painful - more uncomfortable. I'm not showing any of the other signs of an abscess, no fever or high temperature which I did have with the mastitis, so I am probably wrong in my self diagnosis.

Rachie1986 · 17/05/2014 22:16

Evening all. Dd falling asleep on me at the end of a very tough 24hrs, PND progressively worse the last week or so coming to a head today :-(. Dh missed work, lots of tears and struggling, now got anti-ds. Life is tough right now..

Hoping for a settled night for us all xx

OwlinaTree · 17/05/2014 22:45

So sorry you are struggling rachie. Glad you have some support and help.

Boyo is just having his late night feed. He slept from 7ish till 10 as we were traveling home from pil. Then Mr owl gave him a bottle, which he took, but is now feedingoff me. he doesn't seem very tired....

Writerwannabe83 · 17/05/2014 22:45

Hello all,

I'm sorry you are having such a hard time rachie - are you happy to take the anti-depressants? I hope you gave lots of support around you Thanks

DS is currently asleep on my chest but I'm anticipating him waking up in about half an hour for a feed - then hopefully he will sleep through to the early hours of the morning.

I hope everyone has a good night Smile

Marking my place! Am usually up 4-5 times with 23 week old DS.

Ah, I remember thinking, when DS was a newborn, 'he will be sleeping through in a couple of months!' Grin

Anyway, I will probably be back soon. DS wakes every 2 hours past midnight!

Writerwannabe83 · 18/05/2014 00:08

Mep - has DS ever slept through and is now having the typical 4 month regression? Or has he just always been like this?

I'm waiting impatiently for DS to fall asleep on his MB so I can get some sleep too. He's just had a feed, was practically asleep at the breast but now he's in his MB he is wide awake.

My DH is snoring really loudly next to me - he fell asleep within minutes of getting into bed. The lucky sod has been to a BBQ tonight and it's the alcohol that causes his snoring! I'm going to send him to the spare room I think, he will only keep me awake!!

Up here for first feed. 4 ish hours, not bad. I've obviously eaten too much cheese as have been having crazy manic dreams!

Singsongmama · 18/05/2014 03:04

Morning everyone,

Checking in with first feed at half two - I'm a lucky beggar tonight!!

Sending you Flowers and Cake Rachie - well done for getting help. That's a massive, brave step and you should be proud of yourself. I hope we can be supportive on here - and it hope in RL there are folk around you to help. Have you started meds yet?

Writer - if you not happy get second opinion, you know your baby best!

Welcome newbies!

mrsmugoo · 18/05/2014 03:06

Up doing second feed here. Fed about 11:30 lying down but wanted to do nappy change this time so sat up. He's gone straight back to sleep so maybe be back in a few hours.

Misty9 · 18/05/2014 03:49

Up doing long first feed here. Strange day, she slept 9-1pm then was only doing snack type feeds all afternoon, then in evening she just would not latch but was screaming hungry :( in this heat in was concerned at her lack of feeding so off we went to buy bottles and formula. Then of course she had great feed when I got back. That was 8.30 then she slept until 3am! It's nice having long stretches but I thought she'd feed more in this weather, not less. ??

Nearly asleep now I think so will be back in few hours.

TwentiethCenturyGirl · 18/05/2014 04:12

First feed underway here. DD was really sleepy when I lifted her from her basket but unfortunately a nappy change (complete with another poo midway through) means she's currently wide awake and grinning Hmm. We may be here some time!

Sorry to hear that things haven't improved Rachie but well done you for recognising things aren't right and asking for help. I hope you've got some support in RL?

PepperMallow · 18/05/2014 04:47

Hi all

Sorry to hear Rachie but pleased that you have support.

DD had another evening of tummy pain from the looks of it and wanted to be latched on from about 7-1. Nipples too sore so DH tried keeping her distracted with his little finger, but that doesn't work for long! He had to wake me as by about 1:30 I was sitting up in bed feeding but asleep myself!

She's up now with the dawn chorus, which seems to include a cockerel! Despite attention over the marathon feed, left breast hasn't really refilled whilst right is doing well. It's too early at day 6.5 for it to give up. (Left finished earlier each previous time ebf).

Hope all others awake are having more luck and will soon be snoozing again.

Writerwannabe83 · 18/05/2014 05:18

Misty - babies should typically feed more, DS has been having 2-3 extra feeds a day over the last few days, at the time it didn't occur to me that the weather may be behind it. However, all babies are different. Is your DS still having lots of wet nappies?

DS didn't drop off until 01.00am and was up again just before 05.00am so that's the worst I've had for a while. I had an argument with DH before sending him to the spare room last night as I was seriously pissed off that not only had he been out all night (until 11pm) enjoying a BBQ, seeing our friends and having a few drinks but now he also got to sleep like a baby whilst I was struggling to settle DS. DH managed go sleep and snore through 90 minutes of DS's crying and irritability until I poked him really hard and told him to leave the room.

Men - I hope he feels guilty when he wakes up!

Singsongmama · 18/05/2014 05:29

Writer - I did think how patient you were in your first post about hubby being out drinking at BBQ...second post is more in line with what I expected!! He should take LO today so you can have a nap!

Pepper - a cockerel??!!! How horrendous!! Think that'd send me over the edge!

Rachie1986 · 18/05/2014 05:45

Morning. Checking in with first feed - so much better than last night. Thanks for the well wishes. Have good support in RL. Hopefully off to my parents to stay a few days while dh works this shift. Just got to manage the car drive. I have to take pills in the morning so will start today. Only have a few days worth so need to see my dr over the next few days.

Sorry some of the babies have been up a lot.. And glad some of them have been ok xx

CaramellaDeVille · 18/05/2014 07:21

Hourly feeds all night again here. Sometimes even more frequently. It's exhausting but she's genuinely hungry so I'm having to go with it. I hope it doesn't last too much longer though as I'm starting to suffer mood wise like I did with my first baby.

mrsmugoo · 18/05/2014 08:43

After the 3am feed I think we did another little top up at 5ish (with co sleeping I'm basically asleep when I feed and barely remember it!). Up since 7.

Bored on our own so going out as soon as Sainsburys is open to swap a packet of size 2 nappies for size 3 and to buy a couple of summery clothes bits for DS, he's basically only got vests or baby gros.

Writerwannabe83 · 18/05/2014 08:55

caramel - that sounds exhausting. I remember when DS was a newbie I used to think 2 hourly wakings were bad enough! You're doing a great job.

singsong - DH appeared in our bedroom at about 05.30am, he could see I wasn't happy. DS went back to sleep quite easily so I've had another 2.5 hours sleep. I'm just finishing a feed now and then DH is going to take DS downstairs for a bit so I can get some rest. DS is clearly planning on and working on filling his nappy so I hope he does a bloody massive, horrible poo for his dad to deal with! Grin

OP posts:
Writerwannabe83 · 18/05/2014 09:07

DH has just appeared with some toast and a cup of tea Grin guilty conscience maybe?

He has now taken DS downstairs and told me to get some sleep - what he doesn't know is that actually I intend to have some peaceful me time of catching up on Mumsnet with no distraction and getting my Puzzle book out Grin

We had some baby scales arrive in the post yesterday which my mom had ordered as a surprise so I'm going to pop DS on them later. He typically puts 6-8oz on a week (he once put on 10oz in one week) but the last time he was weighed he'd only put 3oz on. The HCP reassured me that it was likely to be because DS is using up all his fat stores to fuel his growth spurt but I still felt a bit Hmm I'm hoping for a better weight gain today.

mrsmugoo - we are going shopping for summer clothes later too! I'm based on the borderline between Leicestershire and Warwickshire and it is so, so hot!
