Calling all nighttime feeders!! Let's all keep us company during those early hours of the morning when we're feeding instead of sleeping!

This is a thread for everyone to chat to each other about their experiences of night time feeding, the good, the bad and the ugly!

There are already a few of us who have been chatting about this in another forum for a few months now but we want to migrate over here to meet more sleep deprived parents!!

Log on and post, no whatever silly hour it is, and vent away about how knackered and stressed you are!! There's a good chance someone else is up and feeding crying with exhaustion too!!

Introductions: I have a 7 week old son, first baby and exclusively breastfeed. He's normally a nightmare to settle to sleep, screaming for hours on end, but will go for 5 hour stretches of sleep!

Grrrr he's done it again - 2 hours sleep and a little slurp of milk!

I don't generally complain about 2 hour stretches as it's been a LOT wires with him but I'm the same singsong - WHEN can I start to reliably start sleeping for 4 or 5 hours and not have to go to bed at 8pm to do so?

Singsongmama · 03/06/2014 03:44

Hi Mugoo, up again. You and I should get coffee!! Our babies are clearly meeting in secret and conspiring against us. He woke at half 2 for a bit of a grizzle and I just lay there thinking no way, there's no way you're getting more milk. I don't even know if he's really hungry but the thought of trying to put a hungry baby to sleep is terrible.

Writerwannabe83 · 03/06/2014 05:07

Morning all, another 6 hour stretch for DS over here.

I struggled to get off to sleep though so I have had 4 hours.

misty - he usually self settles so I don't have to worry about transfers but he just wasn't being himself last night, bless him.

I remember when the weather was warm and DS was waking every 2 hours for a feed and he obviously only wanted the fore milk to quench his thirst as he'd feed for 2-3 minutes then just go back to sleep Hmm I'm hoping he doesn't start doing that again when the hot weather arrives...

Thanks everyone for your thoughts about MIL - they are much appreciated Thanks

Up again here for third (and hopefully final) feed - 2 hours sleep and he's done it again...tiny slurp, fast asleep.

These are the times he normally wakes up anyway but he just doesn't seem to be taking much.

Singsongmama · 03/06/2014 06:55

And again, he was all gorgeous smiles and flapping limbs when he saw me so might be up for the day. Not too bad I guess.

mrsmugoo · 03/06/2014 07:29

He only went down for half an hour so I've been up ages now - watching made in Chelsea on catch up now haha!

OwlinaTree · 03/06/2014 08:15

Hi guys just checking in. Boy awake at 430 and 8ish. Just finished feeding and he's gone back to sleep. Sorry some babies are still awake every 2 hours, it must be so tough. I'm wondering about this 4 month regression I've heard so much about, and trying to appreciate the sleeping now!

I've been washing 3-6 month old clothes this week. DS is 3 months on Thursday, and I think he's ready for a larger size. I think DS is around 15lb, but I'm confused by clothes labels that say 17.5lb, 3-6 months. Does that mean up to 17.5lb or from 17.5lb? Does it even really matter? Grin

Cariad007 · 03/06/2014 08:20

More of the same here - DS went down around 1030pm but was then up every couple of hours. He was in the bed with me though so just helped himself when he was hungry!

I've had a horrid sore throat since yesterday so hope I don't pass it to him. My parents are back from their travels this afternoon and are not returning to Oz til Friday night so at least I have them to help out.

Writerwannabe83 · 03/06/2014 08:58

Morning all,

DS has had another 3 hour sleep and is now having his breakfast. He seems to be having set waking times now, always around 4.30am and then again 8.30am. Sometimes he goes back to sleep after this feed too, I'm hoping so as that's my chance to get myself some cereal and a nice cup of tea Smile

owlina - I wouldn't go by the labels, just put him in clothes that fit. Me and DH had to throw loads of DS's clothes out a few weeks ago and I think we're going have to do it again pretty soon.

OP posts:
puggywug81 · 03/06/2014 09:55

Hope the sore throat gets better soon cariad.

Owlina I really don't think it matters it'd just what fits best, Fin is 9 weeks old 14lb 8 and has been in 3-6 month clothes for 2 weeks,he is a long baby!

Cariad007 · 03/06/2014 10:44

Having a sore throat is really not good when one of DS's favourite activities is me singing to him. Am feeling utterly crap atm so am being a bad mum and sticking DS in front of CBeebies for a bit to give me a break.

FrankelandFilly · 03/06/2014 10:51

Owlina I take the weight shown to be the upper limit. DD is 12 weeks and moved into 3-6 month clothes last week. She was 12lb at her weigh in two weeks ago and is due to be weighed again next week when, based on her recent rate of gain, I'd expect her to be around 14lb.

KateTheShrew · 03/06/2014 12:01

Hi all. Sorry, haven't checked in for a while so haven't had a chance to read all recent posts. singsong, mrsmugoo, I feel your pain!! My DS is still waking every 2-3 hours for a feed exactly the same as in the day. Occasionally we get a 4 or 5 hour stretch at the beginning of the night but you can't rely on it. My main problem at the moment though is that after the first wake up I can't get back to sleep !! Does anyone else struggle with this? I'm exhausted and fall asleep quickly when I go to bed, but after that first feed, forget about it! DS generally goes back to sleep like an angel, and I l lie there, eyes wide open and fuming until 4 or 5am when it's often time for the next feed. Going a bit mental now!

Singsongmama · 03/06/2014 12:18

Hi Shrew, was wondering how you were! Yes I struggle to fall back asleep, it's such a pain. I think it's because DS sometimes wakes after 10/15 mins after feed and being put down so I need to go and resettle him.. .so I just lie there thinking will he be up or will he self settle or will he sleep on....

I am shattered today...

KateTheShrew · 03/06/2014 15:57

...and the result of my dopey, sleep-deprived state? I turned up for an NCT group lunch at someone's house a day late Blush Fortunately they were out so I was able to skulk home again. But I did have to email and fess up when I got home so she didn't think I was just massively rude for not showing up yesterday.

Singsongmama · 03/06/2014 16:58

Ha ha ha! Yes, I have to write everything on my calendar and look at it every day!! Today I went out specifically to buy salad and came back having had a lovely walk. As I opened the front door on my return I realised I hadn't even been into the shop!! No salad with tea tonight....Smile

mrsmugoo · 03/06/2014 19:55

Evening all. DS totally conked out after less than 10 minutes feeding as we've had such a busy day today he was knackered.

He went down at 7:40, I will probably join him shortly!

Writerwannabe83 · 03/06/2014 20:18

Today has been a bit of a nightmare in that DS hasn't really had any sleep since he got up at 10am-ish. He's had the odd 20 minutes here and there but nothing sufficient and he is absolutely shattered. Lots of crying and tears, bless him. I'm feeding him now but I doubt he will sleep anytime soon, 10pm seems his norm no matter how tired he is....

I think he's preparing for another dirty nappy too so I don't think that's helping his mood.

OP posts:
mrsmugoo · 03/06/2014 20:19

Ok, he's awake...presumably for the rest of his feed!

Cariad007 · 03/06/2014 20:25

DS has managed 3 naps of about an hour each today and am currently feeding him to see if he'll sleep but no luck yet. I am shattered and the sore throat isn't helping. My parents are going to come over tomorrow to help out and gve me a chance to rest a bit.

Writer I'm expecting a dirty nappy tomorrow too as it's been a week since the last one.

PollyP0429 · 03/06/2014 20:34

Hi all, lots of up and downs it seems. Owlina my DD is still in her 0-3 months at 4.5 months, petite little thing, I also go with the weight being the top end of the scale.

Those struggling with long winded settling times, I REALLY recommend hoover white noise, someone else discovered it by accident on here, sorry I can't remember who you are but it really does work like magic! Gets DD of within minutes. Ripped a long one off youtube and just leave that playing for her now.

Writer hope your MIL is doing better. And Carid I don't think anyone on here would blame you for wanting to feel like a normal human being, if cbeebies is the answer so be it.

As for my LO her sleep is finally starting to settle down again, getting a few decent 3/4 hour stretches so fingers crossed thats the end of the regression for now

Singsongmama · 03/06/2014 20:44

Feeding to sleep here, all snuggled up and cuddly...he's asleep but doubt it will last when I move.

The sun is streaming in through the blinds....I must get curtains to help with bedtime and those early feeds when it's getting light.

Writer - how is MIL?

Writerwannabe83 · 03/06/2014 21:01

I wish my DS still fed to sleep Sad

MIL is not good unfortunately. We are all preparing for the worst over the next few weeks. She hasn't held DS since the day he was born because of how weak she has been. She is now deteriorating quite quickly. Thank you for asking Thanks

OP posts:
Singsongmama · 03/06/2014 21:18

So sorry to hear that, how sad for you all, especially DH. I hope DS behaves so at least you can both think straight in coming days/weeks. Sending you good sleep vibes.

Misty9 · 03/06/2014 21:48

Evening all. Baby is finally asleep on me after 3 hours of feeding. Yes, 3 hours. Is that even possible?! My nips are sore after that session. We'll see what the night brings. Ds is ill to add to things and has been up crying once already poor thing.
