Calling all nighttime feeders!! Let's all keep us company during those early hours of the morning when we're feeding instead of sleeping!

This is a thread for everyone to chat to each other about their experiences of night time feeding, the good, the bad and the ugly!

There are already a few of us who have been chatting about this in another forum for a few months now but we want to migrate over here to meet more sleep deprived parents!!

Log on and post, no whatever silly hour it is, and vent away about how knackered and stressed you are!! There's a good chance someone else is up and feeding crying with exhaustion too!!

Introductions: I have a 7 week old son, first baby and exclusively breastfeed. He's normally a nightmare to settle to sleep, screaming for hours on end, but will go for 5 hour stretches of sleep!

Well for the second night in a row DD is in her cot asleep in our bedroom while I'm downstairs. Last night she was great, sleeping a good 2 hours solid before I went to bed myself and gave her her last feed at 10pm, so I'm hoping for similar this evening.

I've had to put up the GroBlind in our room though as it's far too light in there! I guess there's never a "good" time to have a small baby -.spring/summer and the early mornings and evenings are too light and in winter it's bloody cold to be getting out of bed in the middle of the night!

Hope everyone else has a good evening and night.

mrsmugoo · 13/05/2014 20:00

Just had bath time now doing bedtime feed. Let's see how this goes!

PastaandCheese · 13/05/2014 20:11

I have a 9 week old DS who is doing great at the moment going through to anywhere between 4.30 and 6.50. In fact he is doing better than his 2.5 year old DD who keeps screaming at 5am that she needs a wee but doesn't want to use the potty or a nappy??? Arghhhhh.

Luckily they are both fast asleep now so I am enjoying the peace.

Writerwannabe83 · 13/05/2014 21:32

DS started his screaming at about 8.30pm so I put him to the breast to try and calm him down where he fed for 45 minutes - he won't stop feeding lately!! He's now in his MB, kicking his legs and chattering away to himself. It usually takes 30 minutes for him to settle to sleep so fingers crossed it won't be too long.....

Here goes. I have a 6 week old Ds and a 4 yr old DD. Ds is quite mellow but a terrible sleeper especially during the day. He will sleep easily when we are out but at home sleeps longer only if he is on me. Today a lot of drama at the 6 weeks appointment. He pooed through the diaper and I had some on my hands. Then the two vaccinations and I couldn't watch so went out. He screamed the whole place down because there were two student doctors who had to examine him and it went on and on and Ds was tired of it.

Then it was time to meet with other new mothers. We decided to meet for coffee but silly me I asked them if they wanted to come back to my place after a walk. God knows why I offered. I am knackered. Ds does not settle for more than 10 minutes during the day and I invite a group of strangers into my home to intertain and provide snacks for. Glutton for punishment is what it is.

Ds hasn't slept a wink the whole day which means he is overtired and being difficult to settle. I have no idea when he will eventually sleep but I hope it's soon as I need some sleep. Some of you said your babies can sleep up to 5hrs. We have not had that here. The longest he has slept at night is 3 hrs and this was right after we came from the hospital. Right now he sleeps for 2hrs then wakes up for a feed. We change a lot of diapers because if we don't then he won't sleep.

Misty9 · 13/05/2014 21:59

We're still trying to settle here as she's having an unsettled evening and won't stop crying...

Misty9 · 13/05/2014 22:05

Sorry, just had to latch her on for the millionth time now feeding so hoping she'll feed to sleep. But she's already done this twice this evening and woken up shortly after. So unpredictable these newborns!

Not looking forward to vaccination time, hope you manage some rest after a stressful day blessed

Writerwannabe83 · 13/05/2014 22:19

Oh blessed - that sounds exhausting! I have also had the horror that is an overtired baby, you have my sympathies.

Well after 45 minutes of him playing around in his MN he has finally gone to sleep! Yay! So I'm off to get some sleep myself but I'll see you all later no doubt!!

BlessedAssurance · 14/05/2014 02:21

At 10.45 he finally settled. Has slept for 3hrs which i am thankful for. I just finished giving him his first feed and he slept right away, i didn't even change his diaper , thank God. However I can't sleep. Had to do a bit of expressing as my knockers were too full. The relief when they are empty:) fingers crossed for 3 more hrs or more.

notadoctor · 14/05/2014 02:37

Blessed - it's so annoying when they're asleep and something else is keeping you awake! Hope you manage a decent stretch!

DS seems to have decided to wake up hourly tonight so I keep nodding off just long enough to have really strange dreams before being jolted awake again! Does anyone else have particularly vivid/ bizarre dreams when they're sleep deprived?

Writerwannabe83 · 14/05/2014 02:43

My DS woke up at 02.30 so another 6 hours since we started his last feed. At least I've had a 4 hour sleep. I'm surprised he managed to latch on though as (to use Blessed's phrase) my knocker was rock hard, absolutely solid!! I was considering expressing some off first but he just screaming too much! He's now draining me and taking little breaks and pulling his "I'm brewing a poo" face!! Something to look forward to in the morning! Grin

OP posts:
Writerwannabe83 · 14/05/2014 02:45

not - I can completely empathise with the dreaming! I keep having flash backs to scenarios I've been in or conversations I've had and I honestly don't know if they were real or if I dreamed them!!

2nd feed here. Think this is 4 month regression. Either that or he's just super hungry. Either way I'm tired and cheesed off. EBF is wonderful and straight forward but the nights are tough! Bottle refuser so DH doesn't even stir now as I struggle out of bed. Anyone else awake out there??!! I bet this thread gets busier at 4am - that's a good time for little treasures to wake up. Hopefully mine won't......

Singsongmama · 14/05/2014 02:59

Dreamed I was being attacked by killer whales as I floated out my bedroom window on a mattress into a stormy sea. Even weirder, David Attenborough was there describing how these whales had special rows of teeth to bite me!

fruitpastille · 14/05/2014 03:02

Yes, I'm here! Dd has been in her moses basket in the living room since 10.30. Dh just brought her up now so she's done over 4 hours. Just hope it doesn't take too long to resettle her.

Writerwannabe83 · 14/05/2014 03:03

I'm still here singsong - my DS has finished his feed but is wide awake....as is always the way! I'm quite lucky in that when DS wakes and cries it is DH who gets up and then does his nappy before passing him to me. Does anyone else get hungry during night feeds?? I always feel starving!!!

OP posts:
fruitpastille · 14/05/2014 03:15

I'm always very hungry for breakfast but fine in the night. I wake up thirsty so have a big glass of lime cordial which I gulp down just before feeds.

Writerwannabe83 · 14/05/2014 03:18

Right, after another 40 minute feed DS seems to be falling asleep. Operation "Transfer to MB" is about to begin!

OP posts:
fruitpastille · 14/05/2014 03:38

Ha! Made the transfer, but rocking.

Writerwannabe83 · 14/05/2014 03:45

Mines in his MB but wide awake and kicking! Grr!!
Why do babies have to be so naughty??

PepperMallow · 14/05/2014 05:05

Hi, DD (DC3) is 2 days old and so we're trying to establish bf still. I'm clearly awake right now but she is asleep. I'm trying to keep her upright for a bit before snuggling her back into her MB as she keeps bringing it all back up.

She seems to respond to bf by going straight to sleep...

Pause for bringing it all back up.....

Hmmm, I have v cracked nipples and there's a lot of dried blood in what she brought up. Can't remember that with older DC. Anyone else had this?

Oh, other end too, DH conveniently closing his eyes and breathing deeply!

Nappy change could wake her to allow us to start this all again. The joys!

PastaandCheese · 14/05/2014 05:13

Ouch pepper that sounds painful. Are you using Lansinoh on your cracks?

Congratulations on your DD. Thanks

DS up for feeding. He gave me the biggest smile ever as I picked him up 'Aaah, you're still here' smiles.

TwentiethCenturyGirl · 14/05/2014 05:38

Pepper - I had the same in the first couple of days with DD2. My nipple healed quickly with Lansinoh and leaving it to air dry as much as possible. Not had any blood in DD's posseted milk since. You have my sympathy though - it hurts!

DD has just woken up here and I've changed a dirty nappy and am feeding her. Unfortunately my boobs were clearly not expecting her to sleep for so long as I've woken up in a pool of leaked milk!

I actually hate it when she wakes when it's light outside like this as I always feel like there's less chance of getting her back to sleep again. At least if it's dark I feel like I might get a couple more hours before the morning. DD1 went through a spell of early rising (5am- urgh) when she was about 15 months and I found that being up for the day really early was harder than waking in the night for feeds.

Singsongmama · 14/05/2014 05:46

Twentiethcentury - totally agree - I see the sunshine and think oh well there goes any chance of any more sleep, rats!! 3rd feed in desperate attempt to put DS back to sleep.

TwentiethCenturyGirl · 14/05/2014 05:53

Glad I'm not alone! DD is still feeding and her big sister will ignore her gro clock be up soon no doubt, so I imagine the day starts here!
