Just wondered - would you breast feed a friend's baby??

Just been having a conversation with a friend - would you be happy breast feeding someone else's baby, and how would you feel if someone else offered to feed yours?

I was thinking of the sort of scenario where you've had to leave your baby with someone else, and they need a feed, like if you're really sick or something.

I don't think I'd have a problem with it either way tbh.

welshboris... and you have contributed exactly what to the subject.also not very nice cow comment..resonably new to this..didnt appreciate ettiquette so its ok then to do the old mature name cally thing then

I would have, especially as I had surplus milk, and I wouldn't mind someone else feeding my baby, if they were someone I knew and trusted (eg not to have been drinking) and felt would have the right kind'n'loving way with them. But I did have acquaintances, ante-natal-class friends etc., who I felt were a bit negative or judgemental with their babies (one who kept calling her newborn "naughty" for crying, for example) and I couldn't have stood to see her breastfeed DS - in those emotional early days I'd have worried she was giving him bad vibes.

I have a bovine version of tourettes, its not name calling
mooooooooo

potoroo · 16/08/2006 20:03

Piffle - that's fantastic.
My friend and I had babies at the same time, and she couldn't produce enough milk so I gave her EBM.
I guess I would have BF her DD and would have been happy for her to BF my DS if necessary, but it never came up.
Couldn't say that about all my friends though

cowmad · 16/08/2006 20:05

still think its weird to bf anyone elses baby
still think its weird to bf after 3rd birthday

donnie · 16/08/2006 20:06

I don't think I would have felt comfortable at all bfing another child, although I wish I had donated when bfing dd1 as I was so full of milk it wasn't true. Express Dairies were knocking at the door....
Of course in the 'olden days' middle and Upper class women in the UK had wet nurses as a matter of routine - which is interesting as it suggests that bfing was seen as somehow crass and peasant like.
I had a lot of trouble bfing dd2 and had to stop at 6 weeks but secretly I love seeing women whip 'em out in public!

getting back to the subject, i would be fine if anyone else had to b/f my child in an extreme circumstance. when dd3 was a few months old, i was back and forth to ICU to visit my dh, i had to keep leaving him to feed my dd3, as she wasnt too good with a bottle. i would've been fine if i had left with a b/feeding mum i trust feeding her, rather that splitting my time between 2 people who both needed me.

CheesyFeet · 16/08/2006 20:27

Cowmad, I reckon you ight not have got such a strong backlash had you not phrased your first post the way you did. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion but "just came across this... cant belive this!!no i definatly would not eewww!!!geroff" - not the best way to say that it's not for you if you don't want to upset people.

FWIW - I would like to think that I would bf someone elses baby if needed. Not too sure that dh would be too chuffed about it though.

Piffle, you're a star

cowmad · 16/08/2006 20:30

now hows trying to get a reaction boris!!an go for it veni vedi!! oh yeh deffo weird

cowmad · 16/08/2006 20:37

cheesy feet it was a qick off the cuff comment initially, but mine non-the less and i still stand by it
Didnt appreciate remarks from couple of "old timers" how can their veiws be more valid than anyone elses.are they not noticing that there are plenty of other posts from other people not liking this idea?

laundrylover · 16/08/2006 20:38

Pleeeeaaaase, not another Pot Noodle night!
My pacifying comments are that I would feed a friend's baby in an emergency like Piffle and am going to let people know to please do the same for me.
If my baby was over a year and I popped my clogs I would be fine with her just having cow's milk BUT will prob be happily feeding her thru the school gates as she is my second and last!!
Yes Beetroot in Africa I saw women doing this and also met a granny whose daughter had died and who kept putting the baby to her breast to stimulate supply. If I had BF then I would have fed that baby there at the bus stop.

CheesyFeet · 16/08/2006 20:42

Your views are just as valid cowmad, but the way you put that particular remark was dismissive of other pov's, IMHO.

Shall we just leave it there? Agree to disagree?

kiskidee · 16/08/2006 20:44

last year around this time, quite a few babies trapped in the Superdome in New Orleans could have done with a wetnurse or two. There were babies the news cameras panned on who were soooo hungry their tongues were hanging out. i still have a vivid picture in my mind of a man holding a 5 week old whose mouth was open in that begging thing that newborns do when they are hungry.

yeah right, give baby formula in an emergency.

Elf1981 · 16/08/2006 20:48

I would but I think it would depend on the babies parents - if they were pro breastfeeding and keen not to give formula, then yes.
I wouldn't mind somebody b.feeding my dd, would probably feel a bit odd but it would be an emergency and I would prefer that to formula.

sweetkitty · 16/08/2006 20:53

Have never really thought about it but I probably would if it was an emergency. I would try and give some EBM first though and would never do it without the mums permission.

milward · 16/08/2006 20:53

Trying to think of the old story about a man in prison being starved but allowed a visit from his daughter (or wife) everyday. She breastfed him & he was let out of jail for surviving the punishment. Anyone know this story?

cowmad · 16/08/2006 20:53

surely comment "feeding thru the school gates" is wrong wrong wrong!!!and we are not in africa are we.Your also not suggesting we continue to lactae in case of an emergency...are you?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/08/2006 20:56

Never heard of that story milward, can you find a link?

kiskidee · 16/08/2006 20:56

your last comment about lactating shows how much your really don't know about bf.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/08/2006 20:57

Ignore it kiskidee. Its trying to provoke a response out of folks.

kiskidee · 16/08/2006 21:00

i know, vvv the troll we know who it is.

wheresmyfroggy · 16/08/2006 21:02

Would be happy for our db to be given ebm of another mother but I know dw would find it hard to think of another woman feeding our baby.
