When did your baby first slept through?

Ericadm · 13/03/2014 07:08

My first baby was bottle fed and she first went from 10pm to 5-6am at about 12 weeks. I am breastfeeding my second (now 6 weeks) and slightly worried that he will take much longer to sleep through. Is there really a difference between breast and bottle fed babies? When did your little ones (either breast or bottle fed) started sleeping longer stretches at night?

No both dcs slept from 10 to 7 at 12 weeks. Ds was bf and dd was bottlefed

lanbro · 13/03/2014 07:23

Both slept through from 12 weeks and both ebf. Both were going 7-6 at around 20 weeks, still ebf. HTH!

primigravida · 13/03/2014 07:28

Both of my babies were exclusively breast-fed. DS first slept through at nine months and DD first slept through at ten weeks.

Treaclepot · 13/03/2014 07:32

Ds1 - 9 weeks
Ds2- 8 weeks
Dd - 5 weeks
All bf
I think it is a mix of luck and good sleep/routine habits. (No lights at night when feeding, no noise, no eye contact, not picking up at every murmur but getting there before they get upset and properly awake, and most importantly putting them to bed with awake as often as possible after a little routine.

kiwiscantfly · 13/03/2014 07:37

I co slept with DD so probably from 9/10 months with me, but properly by herself at 13 months when we did sleep training. She was EBF.

aufaniae · 13/03/2014 07:43

I BF both DC. One slept through from 4 weeks, the other wad still waking up a couple of times a nigt well into toddlerhood.

I'm totally convinced the difference is personality rather than anything I did!

Co-sleeping made night wakings ever so much easier, it's what kept me sane! And it meant DS stayed asleep for an extra hour in the mornings (we started off with him in a crib as DP was unsure about ci-skipping then).

Have you considered cosleeping? Or a 3 sided cot perhaps?

aufaniae · 13/03/2014 07:44

Gah! Do many typos! (ci-skipping?!! Co-sleeping!)

Beanymonster · 13/03/2014 07:49

I think each baby is totally different, which is what this thread will show you for sure! My dd slept through from 4 weeks, on formula, will let you know about dc2 when they arrive!

Forgettable · 13/03/2014 07:56

Dc1 ff, sleeping through didn't happen til 18 months or so

Dc2 bf, slept through say 11 to 6 from 10 weeks

ExcuseTypos · 13/03/2014 08:05

Dd1 bottle fed, 12 weeks
Dd2 breast fed- co slept and she slept through about 12 months.

I do think all babies are different. Dd1 never had a daytime nap, so no wonder she slept through the night. Dd2 had lots of good day time naps, hence waking in the night. It's all swings and round a bouts.

HectorVector · 13/03/2014 08:13

Errrrmmm 11 months for me!

piratecat · 13/03/2014 08:17

Katekate77 · 13/03/2014 08:22

My twins were bottle fed breast milk, they slept from 7pm until 7-8am from about 3 months old and still do at nearly 12 months Smile

ALittleFaith · 13/03/2014 09:27

EBF DD slept through from 6 weeks to 14 weeks. Then the 4 month sleep regression hit....then from 9 months she started sleeping through again (when I night weaned her!).

kalidasa · 13/03/2014 09:36

Another depressing answer for you - he did it two or three times in the space of a week at 12 months and we were v. excited that this was it, but then it all collapsed again over Christmas; we had the best 10 days ever about a fortnight ago, when he slept through about six times (he's now 15 months) but it has since collapsed again (he's had a cold, been teething etc). We've had the same good bedtime routine from very early on, and he has been pretty good at settling himself to sleep in the evening also from early on, we made a point of that. I suppose without those he might have been even worse! He is wakeful during the day too. I think it is just how he expresses any sort of stress or uncertainty.

To be honest I think decent sleep makes a HUGE difference to your experience of the first year (which to be honest I didn't really enjoy). DH and I both feel totally different on the (very) rare occasions when we aren't woken at all. But there does just seem to be a lot of natural variation, whatever you do.

DS was bf till about five months, then mix fed till 10 months.

CityDweller · 13/03/2014 09:52

Depends what you count as sleeping through. Ebf DD slept 8-5ish at about 8wks, then stopped at about 13 wks. She started 'properly' sleeping though (7.30-7.30) at 8.5 months.

Combination of very gentle sleep training at 5 mo (helping her learn to self-settle) and luck.

Oldandcobwebby · 13/03/2014 09:55

Bottle fed. 4 weeks. We had things so easy!

Me23 · 13/03/2014 09:59

Dc1- formula fed 8 months
Dc2- ebf 16 months, he is almost 3 now and still wakes at 5-5;30am!
Due dc3 in October I'm due a good sleeper this time surely.

ThatsMyOnlyShirt · 13/03/2014 10:04

My 9 month old just slept 7-7 last night She has been going longer & longer without waking for a night feed (3am then 4am etc) She was EBF until the introduction of solids at 6 months. We are still b/feeding but mostly down to 3-5 feeds now depending on her mood.

neversleepagain · 13/03/2014 21:09

Twins, both FF.

Twin1 went 11pm-7am at 11 weeks (5 weeks actual as she was 6 weeks premature)
Twin2 went 11pm-7am at 14 weeks (8 weeks actual)

IShallCallYouSquishy · 13/03/2014 21:15

DD did 8-7 with a dream feed at 9.5 weeks and was EBF

DS is only 3 weeks however having been blessed with a generally good sleeper in DD I have a feeling I won't be so lucky with him! He's also EBF.

leedy · 14/03/2014 12:33

DS2 slept through from about 8 weeks (EBF) but then stopped again around 4 months. He's been sleeping through on and off since, though, mainly disturbed by either teeth or developmental/growth spurts.

His older brother, though. Shudder.

TheKnightsThatSayNee · 14/03/2014 12:38

6 weeks ebf.
I did the whole no noise/eye contact/ lights at night thing too. But I strongly suspect dd was a naturally great sleeper just like her mum.

CheeseTMouse · 14/03/2014 12:39

My daughter who has been ebf until starting solids has never slept through and she's approaching 7months. I echo the "every baby is different" line, but it doesn't make it much easier!

AlansLeftMoob · 14/03/2014 12:52

DS1 Formula 3mths.
DS2 Formula 2.5mths.
DS3 Formula still hasn't slept through and is 6mths yawn
