Infant feeding

When did your baby first slept through?

My first baby was bottle fed and she first went from 10pm to 5-6am at about 12 weeks. I am breastfeeding my second (now 6 weeks) and slightly worried that he will take much longer to sleep through. Is there really a difference between breast and bottle fed babies? When did your little ones (either breast or bottle fed) started sleeping longer stretches at night?

DS1 about 4 months
DS2 about 5 months. Both ff by this time but sleeping through was consistant, never looked back.

DD slept through (8-12 hours per night of solid sleep with no feeds) from 4-17 weeks, then it all went to hell. 2 years on she still wakes most nights at least once, stopped feeding her 8 months ago.
DS is 3 months old, he has been doing 8-10 hours per night since about 6 weeks, I am waiting for his sleep to all go to hell in the next month or so :)

8 hours straight through? 18mo. DC now 2.3 and maybe once a week wakes for a feed.

The ISIS sleep study reports data about normal baby sleep. It's quite comforting I think.

One of the interesting findings is that it debunks the myth that ff babies sleep better than bf babies. In fact, mums who ebf report getting more sleep overall than mums who ff, although they do have more wakings.

Really interesting study!

This thread has depressed me.

DS - ebf slept through most of the time from 26 months but up for the day around 5am.
DD - ebf still waiting at 14 months! Wakes at least three times in the night.

4 years old is when she first slept through the night . She was bf up to about age of 3. She picked everything else up pretty quickly just had to cope with the broken nights!

Most of the babies on this thread sound like amazing sleepers!!

DD (ebf) started sleeping through around 12 months.

We're all set for another tough year with DS due in a few weeks, but fingers crossed he starts sleeping through at 3 months like many on this thread. That would be brilliant!!

If by "sleeping through" you mean sleeping continously without waking/crying for at least 8 hours, then:
DS = 36 months
DD = 8 months.

2.5 years!

I don't think it was anything to do with milk though, as he went 10pm-5am/6am without a feed from about 6 months and 7pm-5am from 9 months, and was self-settling from 9 months.

Ds1 went 10-5/6 at 6 weeks.

Ds2 was last night :) :) :) he went 9.30 -5.30! He's 8 weeks old today. Highly unlikely it'll last though.

Both ff.

Ebf DS slept through at 12 weeks for about 2 weeks and then unfortunately stopped and didnt sleep through again until he was 11mo when I night weaned him all but one feed and he soon dropped that feed and slept through soon after. I found things got a lot easier around 7-8mo though when he would only wake for one or two feeds, which felt quite manageable after months of unpredictable and frequent night feeds!

13 weeks, he was formula fed. As someone else said it made a massive difference when we moved him out of his Moses basket. Turns out he really didn't like touching the sides. He then only woke up in the night a handful of times until he was one. However since turning 1 he has had a more periods of waking up in the night. He is currently waking as going through separation anxiety and if he wakes will only sleep with us and must be physically touching both of us. I always thought I would be tough but he just won't go to sleep and to be honest I really need my sleep so whatever works!

I had good routine habits with all mine and they were mostly bottle (formula) fed due to problems with latching - I did do some breast feeding and quite a lot of expressing to bottle in early days.

DD1 - slept through (12 hours) from 9-10 weeks - never really looked back!

DS - slept through from probably a bit before 6 months but that was about 10 hours (7 to 5) and only stayed in his room reliably until 7am at age 3 when we introduced a gro clock!

DD2 - 9 months and still bloody waiting. She has slept through (probably about 3-4 months first time) but generally doesn't and either wakes during night - anytime from 1am for a feed, or is awake from 4-5 am.

HTH but probably not!

11-7 at 7 weeks (FF baby), then 7-7 by 16weeks when we dropped the dream feed. Been sleeping through ever since, unless poorly.

Ds is 5months and ebf. he first slept through at 3.5 months the first time he went in a travel cot rather than moses basket. for him it was unrelated to feeding, it was space!

crazykat · 14/03/2014 13:09

All of mine were ff as I can't bf. they started reliably sleeping through (7-6) about 15 months, except non-sleeping ds2 who still wakes 2-3 times at 17 months.

It all depends on the baby. Friends have had bf babies that slept through from 4 weeks and others were over a year old.

My daughter who has been ebf until starting solids has never slept through and she's approaching 7months. I echo the "every baby is different" line, but it doesn't make it much easier!

6 weeks ebf.
I did the whole no noise/eye contact/ lights at night thing too. But I strongly suspect dd was a naturally great sleeper just like her mum.

DS2 slept through from about 8 weeks (EBF) but then stopped again around 4 months. He's been sleeping through on and off since, though, mainly disturbed by either teeth or developmental/growth spurts.

His older brother, though. Shudder.

DD did 8-7 with a dream feed at 9.5 weeks and was EBF

DS is only 3 weeks however having been blessed with a generally good sleeper in DD I have a feeling I won't be so lucky with him! He's also EBF.

My 9 month old just slept 7-7 last night She has been going longer & longer without waking for a night feed (3am then 4am etc) She was EBF until the introduction of solids at 6 months. We are still b/feeding but mostly down to 3-5 feeds now depending on her mood.
