I've got a horrendous blocked duct I'm in agony. Ds fast asleep so I'm sobbing on the sofa trying to express but I can't get a bloody let down. I've never had this problem before and I don't know what to do. I can't even touch my boob so can't hand express or anything

Ok thanks. I will do as much as I can on the bad side then swap each time.

Dd is most upset she can't go to the dentist today because I'm ill Grin

If it is a blocked duct, I used one of those wheat filled things you stick in the microwave and just kept it on the boob. It helped the let down and then the baby feeding did the rest. As everyone else says though, this sounds more than a blocked duct. Really hope your GP can help ASAP this morning.

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 02/07/2013 06:35

Ha! Love your DD! Do you think she could be bribed with chocolate to be your very important nurse today? This could involve putting on kids films for you all to watch and making sure you are drinking lots of water. Or do you have any family who could come and look after you?

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. You can also alternate hot and cold compresses if you like. x

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 02/07/2013 06:39

YY to Dr. ASAP. Don't want it to develop into an abscess.

SpottyTeacakes · 02/07/2013 06:43

I think dp might stay home today (which is really lovely of him because they have a house to finish by the 20th Confused).

I'm going to ask the receptionist if GP can prescribe over the phone and get some lansinoh (I smugly gave all mine away months ago). Have taken dd's liquid Neurofen in the hope of keeping it down.

I thought blocked ducts were bad this is horrendous hats of to people who continue through this in the early days

Last time I has mastitis the gp prescribed over the phone, dh picked up the antibiotics and I stayed at home.

Rest (! I know, I know!), plenty of liquids.

My sympathies.

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 02/07/2013 06:56

So pleased your DP is staying home to look after you. Hope you feel better soon x

TobyLerone · 02/07/2013 06:58

The antibiotics should work quite quickly.

I had mastitis twice in a month when DS was 3 months old. Eventually it turned into an abscess and meant a hospital admission and emergency op under general anaesthetic. The nurses told me to stop feeding him after that!

You've done brilliantly to do 7 months. I hope you don't have to stop until you're ready.

TallGiraffe · 02/07/2013 08:16

Glad your DP is staying home, mastitis is miserable. I had it at 4w and the pain was worse than my c-section no doubt. Don't worry about supply, I had to stop feeding for 2 weeks when DS was 7m and I was fine. Just empty what you can.

NoTeaForMe · 02/07/2013 08:35

I had mastitis when my first daughter was 2 weeks old. It was horrendous, but the anti-biotics do start working quickly. Glad your husband is taking the day off work.

Good luck.

CrabbyBigBottom · 02/07/2013 08:53

You poor thing. It sounds like mastitis and you absolutely need to see or speak to a GP today and start some antibiotics. If you're being sick please don't just leave it in the hope that it'll resolve on its own.

I can't feed from it it's too painful, it makes me sick. I could try hand expressing a bit

Toby that must have been awful for you Sad

Giraffe that's encouraging thank you.

Doctors at ten. The ibuprofen I've kept down has really helped. I hope ds doesn't hate me

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 02/07/2013 09:02

Mastitis. And if you don't feel like you have serious flu, then not a really bad case! Get to the GP, keep heat on it, and most importantly, keep feeding! It will pass. Rest if you can. {{{hug}}}

SpottyTeacakes · 02/07/2013 09:12

It feels like I have serious flu when I try and feed him, and afterwards and then it calms down for a bit to normal fever symptoms and obviously localised pain. On the plus side I think I managed to get rid of the blockage last night...

TobyLerone · 02/07/2013 09:14

Well done! God, it's horrible. I remember it so clearly, and DS is 14 in a few months!

I hope you feel much better soon.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 02/07/2013 09:55

I would still see the GP. You probably need antibiotics.

Kveta · 02/07/2013 10:38

hope the GP helps - it does sound like mastitis from your descriptions, how miserable :( FWIW I had my worst bout of mastitis when DS was 6 months old, but antibiotics soon knocked it on the head.

SpottyTeacakes · 02/07/2013 10:48

I've got antibiotics and am going to bed. Thank you everyone Smile

OP posts:
SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 02/07/2013 11:10

Good. stay there, and keep feeding. Smile

redwellybluewelly · 02/07/2013 11:15

Only time I had mastitis was just after my DC turned one, too nosy and distracted and a blocked duct was the trigger. Absolutely awful hallucinations and sickness - get well soon OP!

WireCat · 02/07/2013 11:21

Gosh, I feel sick reading it.

Hope you feel better soon. X

MummytoKatie · 02/07/2013 11:36

I used to find when expressing that I needed to think about my dd's face and in particular what her mouth looked like on my breast (as the nipple sort of goes in and out again) as she fed. If I did that for long enough then I would usually be able to start getting milk out and the more that came out the more I relaxed and the more that came out.

I hope you have antibiotics by now.

TallGiraffe · 02/07/2013 13:24

Stay in bed OP and hope you feel much better soon.

As an aside, this is why I love MN. In the middle of the night you can post in distress about something and there are always people here to answer with experience. I'm so glad I live in the social media age.

EldritchCleavage · 02/07/2013 13:28

I used to have to put hot water from the shower on the affected breast then get DH to massage it. Actually easier and more effective than massaging yourself.

I really hope things are getting better OP, it is torture.
