Aptamil Toddler 'Growing Up Milk' smells sweet, is it?

babysaurus · 07/06/2013 21:47

I have used Aptamil since stopping breastfeeding and been happy with it. DS turned 1 last week and we got, mainly due to it being slightly cheaper and DS not 'needing' it as such as his diet is very good, and it smells sweet. The others didn't smell of anything in particular but this one definitely does - does anyone know why? I don't want to be stuffing him full of sugar!
Thanks!

I'd give him cows milk instead as there is no need for growing up milk especially as he has a good diet.

ilovepowerhoop · 07/06/2013 21:51

p.s. it has vanilla added to it which probably makes it smell sweeter

AmandinePoulain · 07/06/2013 21:51

I think it's the vanilla that they add. Dd1 refused to even entertain the idea of cows milk but would drink growing up milk so I assume from that that it tastes better, I'm assuming sweeter.

MortifiedAdams · 07/06/2013 21:52

OP is there a reason you arent giving him cows milk?

Jollyb · 07/06/2013 21:52

I bought a few cartons of the cow and gate one and found it sweet too. Looked at the ingredients and it contained vanilla flavouring.

MimsyBorogroves · 07/06/2013 21:54

Could you try vanilla flavouring in cow's milk? Might save you a lot of money.

racmun · 07/06/2013 21:57

Yes I definitely noticed the sweetness of the milk. I switched to cows milk straight away as i didn't want ds to become accustomed to sweet milk.

Chunkamatic · 07/06/2013 21:59

They sweeten it.

babysaurus · 07/06/2013 21:59

Mortified he was only one last week so I didn't want to put him straight onto cows milk. I realise I can but I thought it might be better to do it more gradually. Confused

So its vanilla then? Grr! I think this might be the last time we buy formula then. Why is it added to the 1yr + milk?

ilovepowerhoop · 07/06/2013 22:01

you dont have to switch to the growing up milk. If you want to do a gradual swap to cows milk then stick to the formula you are already giving and gradually add in drinks of cows milk.

babysaurus · 07/06/2013 22:03

Thanks!
Will swap to cows in the day then phase out formula in the night too.
Do you think the supermarket will accept the unopened box? I bought two!

Cow's milk is shit. I never would have said that a few years ago...both my DDs had cows milk but I'm more educated now. I am not a vegan, an animal activist or a vegitarian but there is too much evidence to say that cow's milk is not good for humans to ever make me drink it again

Harvard Nurses' Study of more than 77,000 women ages 34 to 59 found that those who consumed two or more glasses of milk per day had higher risks of broken hips and arms than those who drank one glass or less per day.(34) T. Colin Campbell, professor of nutritional biochemistry at Cornell University, said, "The association between the intake of animal protein and fracture rates appears to be as strong as that between cigarette smoking and lung cancer."

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 07/06/2013 22:08

There is also evidence to suggest that it's linked to breast cancer.

MortifiedAdams · 07/06/2013 22:09

Strange Neo, I've never even had so much as a broken toe, yet I have had 28 years of regular milk and cheese.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 07/06/2013 22:10

Well I've had 40 years Mortified! No broken anythings...doesn't mean the research isn't correct.

babysaurus · 07/06/2013 22:11

Neo what do you use instead?

mamababa · 07/06/2013 22:19

I wouldnt buy growing up milk. I know too many people who struggled to wean their LO off it as it is sweet. If you don't want to do just cows milk why not do half and half with normal formula?

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 07/06/2013 22:21

Rice milk, almond milk sometimes or none. The DC don't have it at all....they don't drink tea or coffee....they drink water or juice. They don't eat cereal either. Butter has been a problem...but we've more or less replaced that with oils.

babysaurus · 07/06/2013 22:26

Mamababa I am happy to gradually phase out formula altogether. Will replace it during the day first. Last thing I want is him to get a very sweet tooth.
Why do they sweeten it? Ridiculous!

noisytoys · 07/06/2013 22:30

Is there anything that doesn't give you cancer these days? I'm sure just being alive is a risk for cancer maybe we should all cut living from our lives just in case Grin

babysaurus · 07/06/2013 22:36

According to the Daily Mail, Noisy, no!

OP posts:
mamababa · 07/06/2013 22:38

I would hope its not actually sweetened but apparently it does taste sweet. HV told me there is really no benefit of growing up milk over normal formula.

LOL at cutting out living!!!!

I changed during the day as you are doing OP then for the bedtime drink I added cows milk to formula, just changing the balance each night

babysaurus · 07/06/2013 22:52

Thanks. Perhaps I will try that. I am guessing that formula tastes a lot different to cows milk so it may take a few weeks, no...?

Breast milk is sweet, so it wouldn't surprise me if growing up milk was. Since clearly all mothers stop BFing by a year Angry

DD2(12) BF way past a year and still won't drink straight cows milk. DD1 has corrupted her with milkshakes and hot chocolate in the last couple of years, but before that she just ate yoghurt and the odd bit of cooked cheese.
