Aptamil Toddler 'Growing Up Milk' smells sweet, is it?

I have used Aptamil since stopping breastfeeding and been happy with it. DS turned 1 last week and we got, mainly due to it being slightly cheaper and DS not 'needing' it as such as his diet is very good, and it smells sweet. The others didn't smell of anything in particular but this one definitely does - does anyone know why? I don't want to be stuffing him full of sugar!
Thanks!

my two never seemed to notice the difference between formula and cows milk and had switched over within a week or two

Check the label. What is the level of sugar in it?

read from page 59 of this report.

From the above report, the key points

"Growing-up milks and toddler milks are offered by the infant milk manufacturers as an alternative to, or to complement, whole cows? milk for toddlers from about 1 year of age. These milks currently fall outside any compositional regulations, and for the majority of children there is no rationale for giving these milks.
Promotion and marketing of these products led to a 21.5% increase in sales between 2009- 2010. Parents may mistakenly believe their toddlers need these milks to provide sufficient nutrition because promotional materials compare the nutrients in these milks with the nutrients in cows? milk alone, rather than comparing them with a combination of milk and food.
Growing-up and toddler milks provide higher quantities of some micronutrients such as vitamin A, D, iron and zinc than cows? milk and infant and follow-on formula, but are also typically lower in calcium and are sweeter than cows? milk. They are around five times more expensive than cows? milk and are generally not recommended by health professionals.
Full-fat cows? milk is a suitable choice as the main drink for most toddlers from the age of 1 year, who should be obtaining the majority of their nutrients from a balanced diet rather than relying on fortified milk products. The Department of Health recommends that, from the age of 2 years, children who are growing normally and eating a healthy balanced diet can move on to semi-skimmed cows? milk."

it's added so that it tastes better and gets dc's 'addicted'
and yes, it is very sweet compared to cows milk.
children don't need it, varied diet with maybe vit supplements is sufficient.

shiraz that's really interesting, thank you.

Feel a bit duped if the truth be known... Blush

They only need 300ml of full fat cows milk per day, so if you put it in cereal and offer a couple of cups a day it should be enough. Agree though that if you want to do it gradually, give formula but start adding cows milk an ounce at a time. So if Lo has 7floz, make up 6 and add an ounce of cws milk. Just use less formula and more milk until you've stopped the formula altogether.

Please don't use rice milk for babies. Its not recommended at all for use with under 5s due to the arsenic content. We use oat milk for DD1 who is/was(stop experimenting lol) dairy allergic.

There's quite a bit of discussion as to whether duty products are as essential to our set as we've been led to believe :(

mikkii · 07/06/2013 23:39

One suggestion that was made to me when switching DS onto cows milk was to use filtered milk (Cravendale or Tesco pure), it is gentler for their stomach.

AnitaBlake · 07/06/2013 23:39

*still not stop! Sorry!

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 07/06/2013 23:41

I wasn't saying to use rice milk for babies sorry about that...I was answering a Q as to what I use and my children are not babies now.

AnitaBlake · 09/06/2013 22:58

phew glad to hear it Neo! :)
